Highlights from a July 2014 hike along the Split Rock Loop on the Superior Hiking Trail on Minnesota's North Shore. The trail runs up and down Split Rock River, with a view of Split Rock (which the river, lighthouse and state park get their names from) and Lake Superior. The trail can be accessed from a state wayside on Highway 61, south of the state park's main entrance.

Backpacking Superior Hiking Trail - Beaver Bay to Castle Danger
A 2 Day Hike of the Superior Hiking Trail. Starting at Beaver Bay and Heading south to Castle Danger. With two detours and hiking up the west side of the Split Rock loop. Mileage is estimated at 33 miles.
This spring hike was muddy (as should be expected). The weather was nice the first day and I hiked extra mileage quickly to avoid rain that was going be a total washout of the night and next day in cool temperatures.
I camped at the Southwest Split Rock River Campsite. My gear included a Warbonnet Poly Superfly, Warbonnet XLC Hammock, Warbonnet Wooki Underquilt, and a Hammock Gear top quilt. My pack is a Dueter 65 + 10.

Split Rock Lighthouse, MN.
Split Rock Light Station was put into service on July 31, 1910 near the town of Two Harbors on the north shore of Lake Superior. It was built in response to a disastrous 1905 storm that sank or damaged 29 ships on western Lake Superior. During its first 20 years, the station was only accessible by boat so lighthouse keepers and families lived on-site for the Lake Superior shipping season and left for the winter months. In 1924 Hwy 61 was extended past the light station which made the site accessible by car. By the 1930s keepers and their families could live there year round and the light station had become a popular tourist attraction.
The bivalve Fresnel lens was built in Paris, France by Barbier, Bernard & Turene. It was assembled prism by prism in the lighthouse's lantern room with a total weight of nearly 6.5 tons. The lens made one revolution every 20 seconds, floating on a thin layer of mercury. Gears driven by weights on cables turned the lens. Light for the beacon was provided by an incandescent kerosene vapor lamp.

Superior Hiking Trail along the Split Rock River section
This hiking video was taken along the section of the Superior Hiking Trail inside and just North of Split Rock Lighthouse State Park. Because of an abundance of rain in recent weeks and the day before our hike, sections of the hiking path were very muddy, so we bailed back to highway 61 after doing the loop that is mostly contained within Split Rock Lighthouse State Park. Our original plan was to hike from the wayside rest adjacent to the Split Rock Lighthouse State Park (Split Rock River Wayside West ) to Beaver Bay (Lake County Road 4). We used a shuttle service to get from Beaver Bay (Lake County 4) where our car was parked down to the Split Rock River Wayside (W). Cell phone coverage along the trail was non-existent for good portions of the trail, but luckily, with good elevation and nearness to Hwy 61, one's chances improves for getting with-in cell coverage. We called our shuttle service from a nice overlook to Lake Superior so we could get picked back up at Split Rock River Wayside (W) and taken back to our car at Beaver Bay ( Lake County Road 4) otherwise it was about a 10 mile walk along the side of Hwy 61 back to our car which was doable but not what anyone would call backpack hiking.
