Peter Buell Porter
Peter Buell Porter was an American lawyer, soldier and politician who served as United States Secretary of War from 1828 to 1829.
He graduated from Yale College in 1791, studied law in Litchfield, Connecticut, was admitted to the bar, and commenced practice in Canandaigua, New York in 1793. He was Clerk of Ontario County from 1797 to 1804, and was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1802.
In the fall of 1809, Porter moved to Black Rock, New York and was elected as a Democratic-Republican to the 11th and 12th United States Congresses, holding office from March 4, 1809, to March 3, 1813. During his service in Congress, he was a leading figure among Congressional 'war hawks' and Chairman of the Committee that recommended preparation for war with Great Britain. At the same time, from 1810 to 1816, he was a member of the Erie Canal Commission, a commission on inland navigation established in 1810 by the New York State Legislature to survey a canal route from the Hudson River to the Great Lakes.
During the War of 1812, Porter was initially quartermaster general of the New York State Militia from May to October 1812. He participated in and criticized General Alexander Smyth’s abortive operations against British Canada in 1812, culminating in a bloodless duel between the two. The historian John R. Elting wrote of the duel, stating 'Unfortunately, both missed.' He later raised and commanded a brigade of New York militia that incorporated a Six Nations Indian contingent and led his command with distinction. For his actions, he was presented a gold medal under joint resolution of Congress dated November 3, 1814 'for gallantry and good conduct' during the Battle of Chippewa, the Battle of Niagara, and the Siege of Fort Erie.
Porter was Secretary of State of New York from February 1815 to February 1816. He was also elected to the 14th United States Congress. Although his term in Congress began on March 4, 1815, the actual Session began only in December, and he took his seat on December 11, 1815. On January 23, 1816, he resigned, having been appointed a Commissioner under the Treaty of Ghent, which caused a controversy as to the constitutionality of sitting in Congress and holding this commissionership at the same time.
In 1817, his political friends of Tammany Hall printed ballots with his name and distributed them among their followers to vote for Porter for Governor of New York at the special election which was held after the resignation of Governor Daniel D. Tompkins. DeWitt Clinton, the otherwise unopposed candidate, was fiercely hated by the Tammany organization, and Porter received about 1,300 votes although he was not really running for the office. Porter became a regent of the University of the State of New York in 1824, and served in that capacity until 1830.
He was again a member of the State Assembly in 1828, but vacated his seat when he was appointed to the Cabinet. From May 16, 1828, to March 9, 1829, Porter served as U.S. Secretary of War under President John Quincy Adams, and was an advocate for the removal of Eastern Indians beyond the Mississippi. He moved to Niagara Falls in 1836 and was a presidential elector on the Whig ticket in 1840. He died at Niagara Falls in 1844, and was interred in Oakwood Cemetery. Fort Porter and Porter Avenue at Buffalo were named in his honor.
Porter married Letitia Breckinridge of the prominent Breckinridge family in 1818 and their son, Colonel Peter A. Porter, became a Civil War hero who bravely died in the bloody Battle of Cold Harbor. He was also the grandfather of Peter Augustus Porter and uncle of Augustus Seymour Porter and Peter B. Porter, Jr.
Porter's letters and papers survive in the library collections of the Buffalo History Museum. General Porter is buried in Oakwood Cemetery along with brother Augustus.

How it all Began
Welcome to Crystal Beach…a refreshing state of mind inspired by the legendary amusement park once nestled on the shores of Lake Erie above the roar of the mighty Niagara Falls. Original Loganberry, created by the Davis family, PJ, Carolyn, Johnny and Jady was inspired by another local favorite. Derived from the loganberry, a unique cross between ripe and tasty blackberries and raspberries, this secret recipe was once only sold at PJ’s famous barbecue restaurant in Saratoga Springs, NY. Crystal Beach Original and Diet Loganberry are now available in bottles for all to enjoy.
Owners PJ and Carolyn grew up drinking the flavor that became one of their favorite childhood pastimes. They graduated from high school, got married, went to college, and became school teachers. The couple then moved to Saratoga Springs, New York, and 23 years ago opened their restaurant, PJ’s Bar-B-Q, recognized as one of the top 8 barbecue restaurants in the United States by CITY MAGAZINE, a national publication.
Being from Buffalo, the Davis’ wanted to sell popular Buffalo items in their restaurant, such as Buffalo Wings, Kummelweck Sandwiches, Sahlen’s Hot Dogs, and Loganberry! Loganberry became so popular that it was outselling the major leading cola brands also offered at the restaurant. During the winter customers were asking where they could purchase Loganberry while the popular summer restaurant was closed. The Davis’ were then inspired to create PJ’s Crystal Beach Loganberry, a flavor now popular in all of NY State and expanding into new markets nationwide!

1344 pound man airlifted out of house: Saudi Arabian king orders obese man to get treatment
A Saudi Arabian man, who weighs 1344 pounds (610 kilograms/96 stone), has been airlifted out of his house after the King of Saudi Arabia ordered him to get treatment. Six months ago King Abdullah asked for Khalid Mohsin Shaer to be taken to hospital but had to wait until a special bed was made for him in the US.
The 20-year-old patient was taken to King Fahd Medical City in Riyadh on Monday after the Saudi King arranged for his special air transportation from the southern city of Jazan.
A forklift was used to transfer him to an ambulance which took him to a local airport in Jazan. Report by Andrea Lilly.

Songs of New York State - a live concert with Dave Ruch
Going through some piles of old recordings recently, I discovered this video from a September 2008 performance in Fort Edward NY for the Washington County Historical Society. I think enough time had passed since the event that I was able to watch it with fresh eyes and ears, and it seemed like there was some value here, or at least that it might be fun for some other music and history lovers to watch. This is one of my favorite types of performances to do, and the audience (as you will see) was fantastic.
The music and stories touch on many different facets of earlier life in New York State, including the Iroquois (Haudenosaunee), British trading, the jews harp, migration from New England to Central NY and Western NY, agriculture, the Erie Canal, the Great Lakes sailors, Buffalo NY, social dance and square dance, the Adirondacks, North Country, American Revolution, the War of 1812, Essex County NY, Washington County NY, the Battle of Plattsburgh, Edna West Teall, kitchen hops, song collecting, New York Seaport, NYC and more.

If you enjoyed any part of this, or have something to contribute, I'd love to hear from you!

CREDITS: I'm sorry I can't credit the videographer, as I don't know who shot this. I do recall receiving the DVD shortly after the concert from one of the members of the historical society, so thank you to them!
Tobacco breaks hearts - World No Tobacco Day 2018
Tobacco use is a major cause of cardiovascular disease, including coronary heart disease, stroke and peripheral vascular disease.
Despite the devastating harms of tobacco to heart health, and the availability of solutions to reduce tobacco-related death and disease, knowledge among large sections of the public that tobacco is one of the leading causes of CVD is low.
World No Tobacco Day 2018 aims to address that knowledge gap.

Artifishal Full Film | The Fight to Save Wild Salmon
Artifishal is a film about people, rivers, and the fight for the future of wild fish and the environment that supports them. It explores wild salmon’s slide toward extinction, threats posed by fish hatcheries and fish farms, and our continued loss of faith in nature.
Thanks for watching our film, and for your comments -- our primary goal with the film was to shine a spotlight on these issues, to spark dialogue and encourage changes in the way we think about river and fish conservation and fishery management. The common ground we all seem to share is a love of rivers and an interest in seeing wild fish return in greater abundance. Patagonia has been working to protect wild rivers and wild fish for over 40 years. We were founded by an avid fly fisherman – and we’re proud of all our connections to the fish world, which range from our fly fishing and salmon product lines, to the over $20 million in grants we’ve given to local groups working on these issues in communities around the world.
To that end, whatever your point of view, we hope you visit Patagonia Action Works, to learn more about and support groups working to protect wild rivers and wild fish -
Further, this is the 3rd film we’ve made about these issues. First was Damnation, which highlights the destructive effect of obsolete dams on healthy river ecosystems and habitat; and then, Blue Heart of Europe, which shares the shocking story of a tsunami of dam development in the Balkans region of Eastern Europe, and calls for a stop to the construction of 3,000 new hydropower dams and diversions. We couldn’t agree more that habitat destruction, dam building, mismanaged harvest, and pollution of our waterways are also incredibly important issues – check out these films to get a sense for some of our advocacy across the issues.

How to Cook a Steak on a Cast Iron Skillet
Grilling is great, but for a restaurant-quality sear, nothing beats a cast iron pan! Here's a quick how-to on our favorite method for perfect steak:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Preheat skillet over medium-high heat for 5-6 minutes. When it reaches the right temperature, water droplets will vanish on the surface.
Brush your skillet with oil and add your steak. Season with salt and pepper to your liking. Flip after 2 minutes and sear an additional 2 minutes.
Using a an oven mitt, place skillet in oven. For a 1.5 inch steak, bake for 4 minutes for a medium steak.
Remove from oven and let it rest for 5 minutes. Enjoy!
