Rafting the Elaho & Squamish rivers, 20160629
I'd never been whitewater rafting, but other videos made it look like fun, so on June 29, 2016, I headed up to Squamish to give it a try.
Canadian Outback Rafting Company offers what they call the Wet & Wild Elaho Exhilarator. You raft about 21 kilometres (13 miles) down the Elaho and Squamish rivers (the Elaho River becomes the Squamish River part way along). There are some gentle, splashy Class 1 and Class 2 rapids early on, then some Class 3 and Class 4 rapids later that spray cold, glacier runoff water through the boat. (If you go rafting with a commercial operator, the roughest you're likely to get apparently are Class 4 rapids, so this tour may be typical of the B.C. whitewater experience.)
The trip includes about three hours on the water, and some driving time to and from the river. This is a popular experience, drawing participants from all over the world. The day I went, I was the only Canadian among 16 people on two rafts. It was a great mix of people and good fun.
As a neophyte, I was a bit scared I might fall out of the raft and worried about what would happen if that occurred. But the crew at Canadian Outback are great. They give a very helpful safety talk that leaves you feeling assured and prepared, and as it happened, well, nothing happened that I needed to worry about. It was just a great time, paddling, ducking down from time to time, getting splashed and enjoying peaceful floating on calmer stretches. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
