The Motherland is Calling....A Russian WWII Memorial
The 'Motherland Calls' (Russian: Родина-мать зовёт! Rodina-Mat' zovyot!), is also called 'Mother Motherland', 'Mother Motherland Is Calling', 'The Motherland', or 'The Mamayev Monument'. It is a statue in Mamayev Kurgan in Volgograd, (formerly Stalingrad) Russia, and commemorates the Battle of Stalingrad.
The figure itself measures 52 metres (170 feet) tall, with the sword being 33 metres (108 feet). Two hundred steps, symbolizing the 200 days of the Battle of Stalingrad, (from July 17, 1942, through February 2, 1943) lead from the bottom of the hill to the monument.
We're talking BIG statuary! The slide show identifies specific statues' heights.
Mother Russia is located at the top of Mamayev Kurgan, where she is the main monument of a memorial complex to those Soviets who fell in World War II. She represents the Motherland, or Russia. The statue appears on both the current flag and coat of arms of Volgograd Oblast.
Made from concrete and steel, it took 3 years for the statue to be completed. She was officially dedicated on Oct. 15, 1967.
The lead sculptor was Yevgeny Vuchetich. The significant structural engineering challenges of the 7,900 tons (7,800 long tons; 8,700 short tons) of the concrete sculpture were handled by Nikolai Nikitin.
The Hall of Military Glory is a round building at the foot of the Mamayev Kurgan Memorial complex and contains an eternal flame, with walls of names of the dead. It is guarded by a soldier who stands at attention. The changing of the Guard occurs every hour and is quite a spectacle that involves high goose stepping Honor Guards. The total square footage of the memorial complex is sixty-five thousand square meters.
As I understand it, a visitor enters the complex past the 'Singing Walls' then enters the Hall of Honor. From there walks the 'Square of Grief' and then along the Reflection pool via 'Lenin Avenue' On the right side of the Avenue are the huge sculptures of 'Heroes of the Battle'. From there, one passes a smaller pool and the sculpture of 'Fight to the Death'. Then the climbing of the 200 steps which are at least partially lined with wall scenes of the Battle and finally arrives at the Mamayev Kurgan...Motherland Calls.
In May 2009 it was reported that rising water levels had caused the monument's foundations to sink and that the statue is leaning to such a degree that it is feared it will fall over. The leaning is rapidly getting worse. The statue is not fixed to its foundations and is held in place only by its weight. It has moved about 8 inches and is not expected to be able to move much farther without collapsing. While local authorities deny that the statue is in danger, conservation and restoration works started in 2010.
This has been an exceptionally difficult topic to research. While pictures are plentiful, descriptions in English are not. Many of the articles I found were in Russian or had been translated by someone who was not fluent in English. In addition, I found almost every statue, every memorial, every building and walkway had several names which made it difficult to keep track of exactly what was where, etc.
Thank you for watching and I hope you enjoy this slide show. Please be sure to check my other shows and tell your friends about my NiNaWavs2U channel on Youtube.

Mamayev kurgan used to be a nameless hill marked on military-topographic maps as a height - 102,0. This hill was the main link in the general system of defence of Stalingrad front. This place became key position in the battle of Stalingrad. Soviet and German troops fought a fierce battle on its slops at the end of the 1942 year.

Russia Marks WWII Anniversary: Putin’s ‘Night Wolves’ gather at WWII memorial
Russian President Vladimir Putin has led a memorial ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Kremlin Wall, laying a wreath in memory of World War Two victims.
The ceremony marked the 74th anniversary of the invasion of the Soviet Union by the Nazis.
Commemorations elsewhere involved dozens of Russian bikers from a group called ‘Night Wolves’, who are also known as Putin’s Rockers. The pro-Putin biker group arrived at Moscow's Poklonnaya Hill to light candles alongside city residents in memory of those who perished during World War Two.

I have to try to give more importance to some other good things and leave all that happened behind. I have to put new photos on top of the old ones. Sometimes I have some bad rage attacks. If one of my children comes close and puts his hand on my shoulder or something like that I'm always on the defensive. Things are not as they used to be anymore.

Always on the anniversaries I prefer not to watch television, not to see anything about it. When they summon us in the association (Association for the Assistance for Victims of the 11th of March Terrorist Attacks), I always wish I could go to those sessions, but I never go. Maybe it's out of fear, I don't know how to explain the feeling, but I don't want to be there because the people who are going to be paid tribute are not here anymore.

I have not forgotten the attack. Maybe this is why I do so many things. Always during this month if you are very tired when you go to bed, maybe you will be able to sleep for at least a few hours. But for me, March 11th happened yesterday. I'm still waiting for my son to come back home, I still hope I'm going to hear his keys in the lock.

Many of them (people caught up in the Madrid bombings) are over it; they are working now and they have a good social and family environment and they go on. But some others are still stuck. Some who were feeling really good in the past have now suffered a relapse and still need psychological support and medication, and now that we are close to the 5th anniversary, they are quite agitated.

STORYLINE:
Five years on from the deadly train bombings in Madrid, victims and relatives of the horrific attacks which killed 191 people and injured over 1,800, prepare to mark the fifth anniversary on Wednesday, many still in grief, coming to terms with the shattering events.
The 2004 attack involving 10 backpack bombs that ripped through four packed commuter trains has been called Spain's most traumatic event since the Civil War of the 1930s.
Atocha station, one of Madrid's busiest hubs, was one of the stations hit in the wave of simultaneous attacks on the Spanish capital's rail network.
Smaller stations El Pozo and Santa Eugenia were also hit in the attacks.
Ecuadorian Hernan Gustavo, caught up in the bombings, was able to walk away from the train which exploded in Santa Eugenia Station.
In a state of shock, he only realised what had happened when he was watching television coverage of the attacks.
Hernan now has to wear a brace due to spine damage he suffered.

SUMMARY
=======
Joseph Stalin (born Ioseb Besarionis dze Jughashvili; 18 December 1878 – 5 March 1953) was a Soviet revolutionary and politician of Georgian ethnicity. He ruled the Soviet Union from the mid-1920s until his death in 1953, holding the titles of General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1922 to 1952 and the nation's Premier from 1941 to 1953. Initially presiding over an oligarchic one-party system that governed by plurality, he became the de facto dictator of the Soviet Union by the 1930s. Ideologically committed to the Leninist interpretation of Marxism, Stalin helped to formalise these ideas as Marxism–Leninism, while his own policies became known as Stalinism.
Born to a poor family in Gori, Russian Empire (now Georgia), Stalin began his revolutionary career by joining the Marxist Russian Social Democratic Labour Party as a youth. He edited the party's newspaper, Pravda, and raised funds for Vladimir Lenin's Bolshevik faction via robberies, kidnappings, and protection rackets. Repeatedly arrested, he underwent several internal exiles. After the Bolsheviks seized power in Russia during the 1917 October Revolution, Stalin joined the party's governing Politburo, where he was instrumental in overseeing the Soviet Union's establishment in 1922. As Lenin fell ill and then died in 1924, Stalin assumed leadership over the country. During Stalin's rule, Socialism in One Country became a central tenet of the party's dogma, and Lenin's New Economic Policy was replaced with a centralized command economy. Under the Five-Year Plan system, the country underwent collectivisation and rapid industrialization but experienced significant disruptions in food production that contributed to the famine of 1932–33. To eradicate those regarded as enemies of the working class, Stalin instituted the Great Purge, in which over a million were imprisoned and at least 700,000 executed between 1934 and 1939.
Stalin's government promoted Marxism–Leninism abroad through the Communist International and supported anti-fascist movements throughout Europe during the 1930s, particularly in the Spanish Civil War. In 1939, it signed a non-aggression pact with Nazi Germany, resulting in their joint invasion of Poland. Germany ended the pact by invading the Soviet Union in 1941. Despite initial setbacks, the Soviet Red Army repelled the German incursion and captured Berlin in 1945, ending World War II in Europe. The Soviets annexed the Baltic states and helped establish Soviet-aligned governments throughout Central and Eastern Europe, China and North Korea. The Soviet Union and the United States emerged from the war as the two world superpowers. Tensions arose between the Soviet-backed Eastern Bloc and U.S.-backed Western Bloc which became known as the Cold War. Stalin led his country through its post-war reconstruction, during which it developed a nuclear weapon in 1949. In these years, the country experienced another major famine and an anti-semitic campaign peaking in the Doctors' plot. Stalin died in 1953 and was eventually succeeded by Nikita Khrushchev, who denounced his predecessor and initiated a de-Stalinisation process throughout Soviet society.
Widely considered one of the 20th century's most significant figures, Stalin was the subject of a pervasive personality cult within the international Marxist–Leninist movement, for whom Stalin was a champion of socialism and the working class. Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, Stalin has retained popularity in Russia and Georgia as a victorious wartime leader who established the Soviet Union as a major world power. Conversely, his totalitarian government has been widely condemned for overseeing mass repressions, ethnic cleansing, hundreds of thousands of executions, and famines which caused the deaths of millions.
