Places to see in ( Cologne - Germany ) St Ursula
St. Ursula was also built in the late antiquity. It originated on the property of a Roman graveyard. It was named after the Breton princess Ursula, who, according to the legend suffered martyrdom in Cologne together with 11,000 female companions. The church was originally dedicated to the Holy Virgin. The legend and the cult surrounding this martyr gained momentum each times that building work was done on the church or its surroundings.
During the building work numerous mortal remains were found, which were obviously considered the remains of the female martyrs. All that has become part of the church which was built as gallery basilica in the early 12th century, not least of all to create space for the numerous relics.
As the choir chancel was rebuilt in the 13th century in Gothic forms, the presentation of the relics become increasingly important: the walls were made with dual shells, on the one hand to create space and on the other hand to place the relics on display behind bars. The direct closeness to the relics became higher priority in the baroque era and a chapel annex was built: the so-called Golden Chamber was filled with relics from top to bottom and can still be visited today.
The church has rich furnishings from various centuries. The late antiquity “Clematius inscription” or the baroque Grave of the Holy Ursula are objects completely relating to the location, just as the two shrines behind the high altar and, quite especially, the relic busts with the blessed smiling faces of the Virgins.

Eleven thousand virgins - St Ursula (FULL FILM) Mary's Dowry Productions, Pope Benedict
A FULL FILM about an early British-Romano Saint, Ursula, who is most remembered for undertaking one of the greatest pilgrimages of all time as a condition for entering into marriage with the son of a king. St Ursula's father bequeathed an immense fleet of ships for his daughter who took with her many virgin companions, religious and family as they headed for Jerusalem. She and her companions encountered the Huns who were both awed and alarmed at the great Catholic pilgrimage. Ursula was famed for her great wisdom and holiness. She attempted to enlighten the Huns to the Truths of Christ. When she and her group refused to reject Christianity they were Martyred. St Ursula's relics have been a place of pilgrimage themselves and Cologne Cathedral stands upon the spot of Martyrdom. She is a powerful, interesting and inspiring Saint. This is her story based upon the work of John Ruskin who, like many secular s and Saints after her, greatly admired her courage and Faith.
Mary's Dowry Productions is a Catholic film and media apostolate dedicated to promoting and sharing the lives of the Saints and English Martyrs through film and music. Visit our online shop for a full listing of our DVDs.

Hildegard von Bingen (1098 - 1179) - Antiphons to St. Ursula
Nine antiphons - 1. O rubor sanguinis, 2. Studium divinitatis, 3. Unde quocumque, 4. De patria, 5. Deus enim, 6. Aer enim, 7. Et ideo, 8. Deus enim rorem, 9. Sed diabolus - written by Hildegard of Bingen (German: Hildegard von Bingen; Latin: Hildegardis Bingensis; 1098 – 17 September 1179), also known as Saint Hildegard and Sibyl of the Rhine, a legendary and celebrated German Benedictine abbess, writer, composer, philosopher, Christian mystic, visionary, and polymath.
Saint Ursula, (flourished 4th century, Rome; feast day October 21), legendary leader of 11 or 11,000 virgins reputedly martyred at Cologne, now in Germany, by the Huns, 4th-century nomadic invaders of southeastern Europe. The story is based on a 4th- or 5th-century inscription from St. Ursula’s Church, Cologne, stating that an ancient basilica had been restored on the site where some holy virgins were killed. Mentioned again in an 8th- or 9th-century sermon, the number of maidens increased to several thousand, reportedly martyred under the Roman emperor Maximian. In Jacobus de Voragine’s Legenda Aurea (1265–66; Golden Legend) Ursula is a British princess who went to Rome accompanied by 11,000 virgins and was killed with them by the Huns on the return from the pilgrimage. The discovery at Cologne in 1155 of an ancient Roman burial ground believed to contain these martyrs’ relics inspired additional legends. Ursula is the patron of the Order of St. Ursula (Ursulines), a congregation of nuns dedicated to educating girls. In the 1969 reform of the Roman Catholic church calendar her feast day was reduced to observances in certain localities.
Performed by Early Music New York (Frederick Renz, Director).
From the album Music of Medieval Love (2007).
This recording celebrates medieval women as performers, subjects and composers. There are chants, motets, canciones and conducti of love, both spiritual and temporal, honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary, extolling the virtues of sainted and royal women, and illuminating the everyday lives of cloistered as well as secular women. Of the saints, Mary the Virgin was, of course, the most frequently honored. However, several female saints and martyrs were extolled and revered in medieval poetry and music; Saint Catherine (and her fiery wheel), Saint Ursula (with her 11,000 virgin martyrs), Saint Agnes (the Roman, child martyr), and Saint Margaret (swallowed by Satan in the form of a dragon). Released in association with The Metropolitan Museum of Art to coincide with its Treasures of a Lost Art exhibit, this albums feature a dozen women artists directed by Frederick Renz, representing the female face of medieval music in the ecstatic, secular and spiritual works of the time.
