1917 STANLEY STEAMER History... Twins Francis E. Stanley (1849–1918) and Freelan O. Stanley (1849–1940) founded the company after selling their photographic dry plate business to Eastman Kodak. They produced their first car in 1897. During 1898 and 1899, they produced and sold over 200 cars, more than any other U.S. maker.[1] In 1899, Freelan and his wife Flora drove one of their cars to the top of Mount Washington in New Hampshire,[2] the highest peak in the northeastern United States. The ascent took more than two hours and was notable as being the first time a car had climbed the 7.6 miles (12.2 km) long Mount Washington Carriage Road; the descent was accomplished by putting the engine in low gear and braking extensively. [2] The twins later sold the rights to this early design to Locomobile, and in 1902 they formed the Stanley Motor Carriage Company.
Early Stanley cars had light wooden bodies mounted on tubular steel frames by means of full-elliptic springs. Steam was generated in a vertical fire-tube boiler, mounted beneath the seat, with a vaporizing gasoline (later, kerosene) burner underneath. The boiler was reinforced by several layers of piano wire wound around it, which gave it a strong, yet relatively light-weight, shell. In early models, the vertical fire-tubes were made of copper, and were expanded into holes in the upper and lower crown sheets.[3] In later models, the installation of a condenser caused oil-fouling of the expansion joints, and welded steel fire-tubes were used instead.
The engine had two double-acting cylinders side-by-side, equipped with slide-valves, and was of the simple-expansion type. Drive was transmitted directly from the engine crankshaft to a rear-mounted differential by means of a chain. Locomobiles were often modified by their owners, who added third-party accessories, e.g. improved lubricators, condensers, and devices which mitigated the laborious starting procedure, and so forth.
A 1917 Stanley Steamer set the world record for the fastest mile in an automobile (28.2 seconds) in 1906. This record (127 mph (204 km/h)) was not broken by any automobile until 1911, although Glen Curtiss beat the record in 1907 with a V-8 powered motorcycle at 136 mph (219 km/h). The record for steam-powered automobiles was not broken until 2009.[5][6]
Production rose to 500 cars in 1917.

This video is of our trip to Estes Park Colorado and we visited the Stanley Hotel. We fed some birds at McDonald's and then got shocked by the elevator in the hotel. The world's largest whiskey selection is at the hotel too along with one of the famous Stanley steamer cars. Thanks for watching.

Take a walk through Blackhawk or ride the free shuttle a mile southwest to Central City and visit the historic Central City Opera House or the Gilpin County Museum and learn about mining life in the 1870’s gold rush.
The Ameristar is the perfect daily starting point for classic Colorado cruises. Rocky Mountain National Park. The wine country at Palisade. Five fabulous car museums are an easy drive from the hotel. The Colorado Railroad Museum with its rich history of the narrow-gauge trains of the Rocky Mountains is less than an hour away. You can ride the famous Georgetown loop steam railroad and walk deep into a hard rock gold mine before lunch.
Want to explore on your own? Grab a map or ask one of the local Kappa drivers. Then, hit the road for beautiful scenery or keep your eye closer to the road on some of the twistiest mountain roads you will find this side of the Mississippi. Not to mention the many microbreweries in the Colorado mountains!
Head south and drive up Pikes Peak and stand where Katherine Lee Bates stood. On the way back, stop into the Air Force Academy and take a walk inside one of the most beautiful and famous chapels in the world.
Or head west along I-70 to Grand Junction. Enjoy the banana belt of the west where wine tasting and great dining is just a couple of hours away. Extend your vacation and continue west into Moab Utah where you can visit the Arch's National Monument and stop into town for a great bite to eat, or head for Durango and drive over the iconic Million Dollar Highway.
North of Blackhawk, more scenic driving and wildlife can be found along Trail Ridge road in Rocky Mountain National Park. You will see elk, deer and if you're lucky, you may even come across a moose. From the top of Trail Ridge, drop into Estes Park and visit the famous Stanley Hotel and any number of micro brews throughout the town.
There is so much to do during your stay at NASSAM 2018 including talking with vendors about your car or learn how to detail and get that professional shine.

Thorium.
Thorium is an abundant material which can be transformed into massive quantities of energy. To do so efficiently requires a very different nuclear reactor than the kind we use today- Not one that uses solid fuel rods, but a reactor in which the fuel is kept in a liquid state. Not one that uses pressurized water as a coolant, but a reactor that uses chemically stable molten salts.
Such a reactor is called a Molten Salt Reactor. Many different configurations are possible. Some of these configurations can harness Thorium very efficiently.
This video explores the attributes of Molten Salt Reactors. Why are they compelling? And why do many people (including myself) see them as the only economical way of fully harnessing ALL our nuclear fuels... including Thorium.
This video has been under development since 2012. I hope it conveys to you why I personally find Molten Salt Reactors so compelling, as do the many volunteers and supporters who helped create it. Much of the footage was shot by volunteers.
