We decided to base ourselves at Kendenup Campground which is on the western side of the Stirling Ranges. This was a real hidden gem with great flat shady sites. A newly refurbished amenities block, drinking water and a large grassy field right next door. We opted to get power which was only $15 a night (bargain!). Ian one of the hosts gave us a map of the area and suggested some local sites to see.
There was two hikes we wanted to do, Bluff Knoll & Mt Toolbrunup. As we had setup and settled into camp all by 1pm, we decided to do Bluff Knoll that afternoon. We drove over, and arrived ready to tackle our mid afternoon hike. It was clear skies when we left the car park but we could see a few clouds off in the distance. We decided since we were here, we’d play it by ear and see if we can make it to the summit.
Bluff Knoll
The hike up was relatively steep in sections, but manageable. Keeping a constant eye on the weather we started to see clusters of grey clouds forming. They were moving in the opposite direction to us, so we kept hiking. After an hour we got approx 9/10 of the way to the summit and made the call to abort the mission. The clouds had changed direction and we could hear thunder and saw a few lighting strikes.
We RAN down the mountain in 30 minutes, fueled by our adrenaline, we made it safely back to the Nav. About 5 minutes after driving off from the carpark, you couldn’t even see the top of Bluff Knoll it was covered by clouds. Headed back to camp, we discussed what a close call that was and a friendly reminder on how quick the weather can change at altitude.
The next day, we awoke to a clear sunny day with no clouds in sight. We ran a few laps around the oval with Rusty, warming up our legs for Mt Toolbrunup. A 4km class 5 hike, with the peak 1052m high above sea level. It was a challenging hike with the first 2/3 loose shoals and the last 1/3 was hiking over steep boulders. It took us 1hr 45mins to reach the summit and we were rewarded with epic 360 degree views of the surrounds.
Definitely recommend this hike if you are physically fit. We are in no means ‘athletes’ but we like doing the occasional challenging hike to test ourselves and work off those extra beers. Plus it's always a good endorphin rush when you successfully make it to the summit.
Well we made it back to camp around lunchtime and put our feet up to relax around camp for the rest of the day. In the morning we packed up and set off to explore the nearby sites Ian had suggested. Right across from the shop in town (there is only one store) is some large chess pieces carved out of wood. Hot tip: ask around on why the chess pieces and how they came to be there.
Gold Mine Battery
A 5 minute drive from here we went and saw the first ever gold mine in WA! Setup in 1875 with a battery, water pump and other machinery. All the machinery was rusting away and it was a shame it's not preserved better, considering its significance. About 50m up from here we saw the original shaft.

HIKING | The Stirling Ridge - Western Australia
The Ridge Walk is approximately 26km one way from the north east corner of the park boundary via Ellen Peak, to the Bluff Knoll car park. The hike can be done heading in either direction, and takes walkers 2-3 days to complete. You will generally have to walk additional km's at the beginning or end of the hike, depending on where you left your car.
There is no track. A vague trail can be followed over most of the walk, but this is easily lost. Walkers have constructed cairns to help guide others through sections of the walk. Some of these cairns get knocked down, or can lead to false trails. This bushwalk is not managed and natural hazards do exist. Low cloud frequently engulfs the ridge, bringing visibility down to a few metres. Careful navigation is required at all times.
The weather can change very quickly and strong winds and driving rain will test the best of equipment. You’ll soon discover that those Gore-tex jackets aren’t as waterproof as you thought.
Finally, there is no reliable water source. There is a 44 gallon drum on Third Arrow, that collects rain drops from the roof of the cave. The creek crossing the North Mirlpunda track carries water well into spring, but completely dries up in summer.
The drip next to the cave on Pyungoorup Peak also carries water well into spring, though it is just a drip and it can take several hours to collect an appreciable quantity of water. Bring more than enough water.

Disclaimer: We climbed Mount Trio and Toolbrunup. They are both very dangerous climbs especially if you're carrying camera equipment. They have loose rocks. It is a mountain risk area. Make sure you are fit, agile and have good footwear.

Whilst Mount Toolbrunup is the second highest peak in the Stirling Range at 1,052 m, it is a more difficult and rewarding climb than the higher Bluff Knoll (highest Peak at 1,099m). Do not overlook this gem.

Our last day at the Stirling Ranges finally saw us climb Mount Toolbrunup. Its 1052 metres make it the second highest peak in the Stirling Ranges. Only Bluff Knoll is higher but compared to what we were about to do a walk in the park! We quickly learned that when they were saying it would be a challenging climb they didn’t lie. We arrived at the top utterly destroyed but happy. It took us a good two and a half hours to get there, scrambling over big rocks and boulders and on the really steep sections pulling our tired bodies up the mountain by holding on to thorny shrubs and trees that grew along the way. We were rewarded with a fantastic view from the top. There was a summit book too. Our entry reads: “Painfully whinging wife is spoiling the view.”

Enjoy part 1 of our Stirling Range Walk over the Anzac holidays 2018. We did Ellen Peak to 1st Arrow and down off the range via the North Mirlpunda track so not the whole way to Bluff Knoll. It was very challenging and therefore very rewarding! :-)

Hiking Western Australia - Stirling Range Ridge Walk SOLO
The weather had been perfect all November. After a failed attempt a few years ago, I was itching to complete the ridge walk. The first weekend I had free was so damn hot.. Still, it was an awesome experience. The Stirling Ranges is a truly beautiful place. Worth every bit of effort it demands to hike it. It takes all your working life stresses and smacks the big red reset button. You leave with a true appreciation for life and our beautiful country.
27Kg pack, including 13 litres of water(200ml spare!!! was so hot!!). On trail @ 10:00 Friday. Off trail @ 10:00 Sunday. Ellen Peak to Bluff Knoll.
