Royal Canal Tour in Stockholm - Sweden 4K Travel Channel
The Royal Canal tour leads around the island of Djurgarden through the green Stockholm. It starts at the Strömkajen on the peninsula Blasieholmen, east of Kungsträdgarden. Here was once the island Käpplingen. But it got connected to Norrmalm in the 17th century and became the peninsula Blasieholmen.
We pass the National Museum and the museum quay. Some of the ships here were restored true to the original and are partly still driven by steam-driven engines.
Past the Royal Dramatic Theater, we reach the most fashionable residential area of Stockholm, the district of Östermalm. The boulevard Strandvägen with its chic buildings is the first address for famous personalities such as Björn Borg, or Per Gessle, the singer of Roxette.
On the right is the island of Djurgarden. Djurgarden is almost 4 km long and 1 km wide.
Djurgarden is the Swedish word for a game park. Until 1809, it was the royal hunting ground. Today, it belongs to the only National City Park in Sweden founded in 1995.
The Djurgården canal forms the northern border of the island. The canal opened in 1834 after a 10-year construction period. Before this, this was a natural waterway, which silted up by the Scandinavian postglacial rebound. Then King Charles XIV erected this canal.
On the island of Djurgarden is the open-air museum Skansen. It is the oldest open-air museum in the world and the only one which is home to wild animals.
But Djurgarden is also home to the Vasa Museum, the Abba Museum, the Nordic Museum and not to forget Junibacken. The Museum Junibacken is dedicated to Swedish children's literature, especially those of Astrid Lindgren.
There are also amusement parks such as Gröner Lund, a Circus, guest houses, villas, and pleasure palaces.
Our excursion boat circumnavigates the island so that we can gain a good impression not only from the canal but also from Stockholm harbor. The gigantic cruise liners and ferries fascinate us again and again.
Passing the old town of Gamla Stan with the royal castle, the Royal Canal Tour ends again at Strömkajen.

Under the Bridges of Stockholm - Sweden 4K Travel Channel
Under the bridges of Stockholm, Swedish: Under Stockholms Broar, that is the name of one of the many sightseeing tours by boat in and around Stockholm. The starting point of the boat tour is the Strökajen in the section next to the Strombron bridge. A little further to the east, the Stromkajen goes passed the Grand Hotel, one of Stockholm's landmarks.
The mirror hall of the Grand Hotel was the venue for the Nobel banquets from the very beginning in 1901, up to 1929. After the event became too big, the Nobel banquet moved to the town hall, where it still takes place today. But the award winners with their families lodge at the Grand Hotel.
A small episode on the edge: The Grand Hotel was also the first hotel in Stockholm, where the bed linen was changed when new guests arrived.
The adjacent building with the sign of the Royal Automobile Club KAK on the roof is the so-called Bolinderska palatset. Built from 1874 to 1877 by order of the industrialist Jean Bolinder from Stockholm, it is today part of the Grand Hotel.
We chose a sunny Wednesday in July for our boat trip. Blue skies and the sunshine show the panorama of the city from its most beautiful side.
First, we sail around the Blasieholmen peninsula and we make another short stop at Nybroplan to pick up further passengers.
Then the boat leaves the inner harbor between the museum islands of Skeppsholmen and Djurgarden. Djurgarden is the only national park in the world that lies within a city. We also pass by the impressive Vasa Museum.
Then the boat steed toward the island of Södermalm. Södermalm was the backdrop for a series of scenes from the Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy.
We circle around the Viking Line pier and turn into the Danvik Canal. Afterward, we cross the Danviksbro, a drawbridge, which also allows the passage for sailing ships with a high mast. Actually, there are 2 bridges, one for the train and one for the motor traffic.

Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, encompasses 14 islands and more than 50 bridges on an extensive Baltic Sea archipelago. The cobblestone streets and ochre-colored buildings of Gamla Stan (the old town) are home to the 13th-century Storkyrkan Cathedral, the Kungliga Slottet Royal Palace and the Nobel Museum, which focuses on the Nobel Prize. Ferries and sightseeing boats shuttle passengers between the islands.
Visiting the Royal Castle in Stockholm - Sweden 4K Travel Channel
The Stockholm Palace is in the center of Stockholm, not far from the Old Town Gamla Stan on the island of Stadsholmen. The Palace, also called the Royal Palace, was built on the foundation walls of the Tre Kronor Palace, which burnt down in 1697. It is one of the largest castles in Europe and has 605 rooms, one room more than the Buckingham Palace. But who has already counted them?
The Stockholm Palace now houses the offices of the King and other members of the Royal House. As the official residence, it is also used for representation purposes.
The former living rooms are mainly publicly accessible as a museum. The castle also houses the Tre Kronor Museum, the Royal Armory and Gustav III's Museum of Antiquities. There is also the treasury, but unfortunately filming is strictly forbidden (why actually?).
The Royal Apartments (castle museum)
After we have inspected the central inner courtyard, we enter the main building. Via a staircase, we reach the throne and coronation hall. A highlight of our tour is the gallery of Karl XI. The hall of mirrors is used for banquets of up to 170 guests. The inspiration for this hall was by its namesake, the hall of mirrors in the Versailles Palace.
One floor down is a series of rooms, used for representation purposes. There is also a collection of clocks with models from all epochs. Interesting is a model of the clock tower of Mecca, a gift to the king on a visit to Saudi Arabia 2011.
The Tre Kronor Museum
This museum is dedicated to the original Tre Kronor Palace. The name Tre Kronor goes back to the realm symbol, the three crowns. They once crowned the castle, which was destroyed by a heavy fire in 1697. The entrance of the Tre Kronor Museum is in the basement of the palace.
You see various models of the old castle and a part of the original foundation wall here. Next to the Tre Kronor Museum is the Treasury
Gustav III's Museum of Antiquities

Antikmuseum Gustav III.

Stockholms Tunnelbana - Sweden 4K Travel Channel
Stockholms Tunnelbana is the only metro system in Sweden. The operator is MTR Stockholm, the Swedish subsidiary of the Chinese enterprise MTR Corporation. The metro network is 105.7 km long and has 110 stations. More than 90 stations were designed by about 150 different local artists. This makes Tunnelbana the longest art gallery in the world.
Currently, the Tunnelbana has three colored main lines, the red, the green and the blue line. All lines meet under the central station Stockholm, in the station T-Centralen.
Not all stations have the same artistical design. One finds the most beautiful works of art in the city area.
We start our tour with the green line at Bagarmossen. But we mainly find colored luminous rows, so we continue straight to Hötorget. Here we discover light installations at the ceiling there. In the station Thorildsplan a sundial.
We were already a little disappointed and decided not visit the station Solna Centrum. Later it turned out to be a mistake because you also find an imposing design there.
Thus we continue to Fridhemsplan. Here we get an impression of the fantastic design of the subway stations, for the first time. The platforms have been driven into the granite rock and covered only with a thin concrete layer for stabilization. So one preserved the impression of a natural cave.
The artists Möller and Renqvist created exhibits that relate to the sea. Nautical objects and paintings loosen the monumental walls.
The blue line takes us to Radhuset station. The artist Sigvard Olsson created a bronze underground grotto, which impresses with its imposing simplicity. An archaic column structure, symbolizing the plinth of a huge chimney stack, completes the overall impression.
The design of the platform of the individual lines at T-Centralen differs from each other. The blue color, partly interrupted by white ornamentation, dominates the stations of the blue line.
Now we take the red line. Graffiti dominates in the station Östermalmstorg. Here, the artist Siri Derkert addresses the subjects world peace, the rights of women and the green movement.
We very much like the Station of the Royal Institute of Technology, Tekniska högskolan. The artworks symbolize the four elements of the universe and make reference to physics, mathematics, and geometry.

In Östermalmstorg dominieren Graffities.

Meeting with Friends in Stockholm - Sweden 4K Travel Channel
The venue is the Haymarket by Scandic, one of Stockholm’s most iconic buildings from the 19th century. Today it is a hip hotel and restaurant in Stockholm. Haymarket was once a well-known fashion and design department store. At this exclusive address, Greta Gabor worked as a sales clerk in the hat department before she was discovered by Hollywood.
Haymarket by Scandic is located at Hötorget, a square in the center of Stockholm. On the opposite side of the square is the concert hall (Stockholms Konserthus), the place where the Nobel prizes are awarded.
The occasion for the event is the opening of the Travel Blogger conference in Stockholm. Since the hotel is set up in the style of the 1920s (Art Decor), the event is also under this motto. But there is no room for such fancy clothes in our travel luggage. Even so, we find it nice that some have dressed up in the style of the 20s.
It is always an experience, to meet the people again, whom one has already met and got on well in other countries or in the net.
Besides drinks, delicious food is served on a buffet.
After many conversations in an enjoyable atmosphere, we return to our hotel.

Stockholm Winter Boat Tour, Sweden
(
We’ll guide you along the city’s quays, out to and around the islands of Fjäderholmarna. If we are lucky there is ice on the water for the ship to break through.
On board the guide tells us interesting facts about Stockholm’s history and surroundings. For those who wants to defy the cold outside for the best view on upper deck we have skin rugs and fleece blankets to keep you warm. If you feel a bit chilly we serve Swedish Glögg, a traditional hot mulled wine in the cafeteria. Here you will also find other warm and cold beverages.
Add some Swedish tradition for lunch
Enjoy a bowl of tomato soup or Swedish pea soup and maybe a glass of arrack as Stockholm passes by outside. Peas have been grown in Sweden since the Stone Age and the soup was an important dish in the navy and on merchant ships. We have the pleasure to serve this traditional soup onboard M/S Angantyr.
