Stow Lake, Golden Gate park, San Francisco
Paddle boating in Golden Gate park, the place of many wonders in the beautiful City of San Francisco!
If I start naming all types of fun that Golden Gate Park has to offer, the list will be long: Academy of Sciences, De Young Art museum, Botanical garden, antlers lodge, a herd of bison, Conservatory of flowers and so on. However, one of our favorite activities is boating on an artificial lake called Stow Lake near Japanese tea garden.
We aim at doing his at least once a year and previously always had chosen to take a row boat. This time we will test a paddle boat!
There is a paved walkway around the lake with few picnic tables and plenty of benches.
The walkway takes pedestrians around the lake. At one point it reaches a dock and a boathouse with a small café.
Nice place for birthday parties by the way.
The Stow Lake was created in 1893 as a water reservoir for Golden Gate park irrigation. Try to imagine, at that time, horses were pulling carriages with ladies and gentleman around the lake.
The lake is full of geese and ducks. You can easily spot a turtle or a bunch of turtles warming up on the branches. You can even try to get closer.
An interesting detail - the pale stones on the shores of the lake have signs of craftsmanship. Those are likely building blocks of a medieval monastery constructed in thirteen century.
There is a long story about a wealthy American buying an abandon abbey in Europe and bringing the stones to California hoping to reconstruct the building.
Some of the stones ended up near the entrance of Botanical Garden and it looks and I guess some of them are now scattered across the Park.
The lake surrounds the steep hill named Strawberry hill after wild strawberries that used to grow there.
In addition to the boathouse, the Stow Lake has two main attractions: a waterfall and a pavilion celebrating a friendship with one of many San Francisco’s sister city named Taipei City in Taiwan.
A word of advice, pay attention to how well your boat moves along unless you do not mind extra exercise. Some pedal boats may be less efficient than others and that may be a bit frustrating – ask for replacement before you paddle too far if you feel like something is wrong. The life jackets are required and provided. The restroom is across the road at the parking lot behind the boathouse.
Remember, if you come during spring time, you might see ducklings and goslings. We heard that herons also nest here using the branches of the trees on the small island on the east corner of the lake.
After making a paddling on the lake we will check out the Strawberry hill and get closer to the pavilion and waterfalls.
We are crossing the old stone bridge also known as Rustic Bridge that was built in 1893!
It’s made of bricks cut from red chert, local sedimentary rocks. It was designed by a talented architect Arthur Page Brown who sadly died at age 36 after a run-away horse incident.
We are now entering the so called Chinese pavilion.
It has nice decorations – lots of carved dragons.
The 110-foot water fall is named after a reach businessman Collis Potter Huntington involved in building a whole bunch of the railroads including Central Pacific Railroad, which was a part of transcontinental railroad.
You can climb the stairs on the side of the waterfalls, check out water reservoir on the top and ruins of the observatory destroyed by the famous earthquake of 1906 shortly after it was built.
Thanks for watching!

A walk around Stow Lake - San Francisco, Ca.
Stow Lake
Golden Gate Park San Francisco, Ca.
Stow Lake is a manmade lake in Golden Gate Park with a rich history that dates back to 1893. The lake has provided San Franciscans with an outdoor escape for more than a century, as they come to enjoy the scenery and allure of the city. Offering hiking and bike trails, Stow Lake is a popular destination for visitors looking to engage in active pursuits in the park. A lazy Sunday afternoon may include a rowboat ride across the waters. Weekend picnicking, wildlife viewing, and even ghost hunting are also favorite endeavors of park visitors.
Things to Do at Stow Lake
If you are a San Francisco local and frequent Golden Gate Park, floating or paddling about Stow Lake at least once in your lifetime is a must. Creating endless memories, those who rent a row boat, electric boat or pedal boat from the Stow Lake Boathouse may steal a romantic kiss on the water, catch a glimpse of a waterfall, or treat the kids to an adventurous afternoon. The Boathouse is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day of the week -- ready to provide you with a vessel of your choosing. Before you leave, consider taking advantage of the Surrey Quadricycle photo op at the rental center.
Bring your lunch and enjoy a picnic in the park while at Stow Lake. Offering eight picnic tables and two BBQ grills, some people also rent the picnic area for family celebrations, parties, and other gatherings. When nature calls, locate the Stow Lake restrooms situated close to the Boathouse.
Hungry or thirsty? The onsite café at the Boathouse provides visitors with a cup of coffee, healthy snack, or tasty sandwich.
The surrounding bridges, feathered residents, meandering turtles, and other bursts of nature create a wealth of photo opportunities -- so don't forget your camera. For some parents, bringing the kiddies to Golden Gate Park's Stow Lake is a tradition. Children enjoy walking around the lake and crossing over the bridges to venture throughout Strawberry Hill, which is situated in the center of the lake. The more ambitious outings may include a visit to the historic Pioneer Log Cabin located near John F. Kennedy Drive.
Other sights of Stow Lake include endless wildlife, many birds (some of which are on a serious prowl for their next meal), and the bright red colors of the round Chinese pagoda -- a gift given to the park from San Francisco's 'sister city' of Taipei.
The more daring visitors of Stow Lake might want to stick around as dusk nears to investigate the legend of the White Lady, who is at the center of a more than 100-year ghost tale.
Location
Stow Lake is located between John F. Kennedy Drive and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive -- west of the Japanese Tea Gardens.
There are many staircases and paths that lead to the lake, including a stairway found on the path leaving the rear exit of the Japanese Tea Garden, as well as steps leading up from Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
Free parking is available along Stow Lake Drive. However, keep in mind that no cars are allowed on John F. Kennedy Drive on Saturdays (April to September) or Sundays (year-round) -- access is only available then from Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

Stow Lake is a man-made lake with an island in the middle, tucked away in Golden Gate Park. This charming little lake, with its pedal boats, waterfall and Chinese pavilion, is one of the locals' favorite places.
Generations of San Franciscans have been coming to Stow Lake to sail around on the boats, walk the wooded paths and watch the ducks and turtles. I'm having fun with my Hover Camera Passport.

San Francisco Stow Lake: White Lady Challenge
We visited Haunted Stow Lake in San Francisco, California, and we did the White Lady Challenge. This was one of the scariest challenges by far because not only were we outdoors in a dark lonely lake when we did the challenge, but at night there is an unexplainable dreadful feeling. During the day Stow Lake was eerie but nice, but at night it was just plain scary!!!
