I share a personal philosophy of how I like to travel India. Delhi is a great place to start! It's not easy, but it can be rewarding and delicious if you keep an open mind. I also tried cricket for the first and last time. Ear cleaning in the streets... well... that's really not for everyone. Oh, and I tried Vietnamese food as well.

Vimalakirti Sutra, New Delhi, India, 16 - 17 March 2018 - Part 1
Vimalakirti Sutra, New Delhi, India, 16 -17 March 2018
The story starts with the wealthy merchant, Vimalakirti, falling ill and surrounded by visitors. The Buddha being one of his friends and teacher, has asked his disciples to check up on him. Vimalakirti’s sickness points to the quintessential wisdom of the sutra. We tend to look down on emotions and the volatile mind, seeing defilements as a problem and the path as a solution. How often do we hear of “mind training”? But according to Vimalakirti, having defilements is equal to having wisdom. Just as the lotus grows in muddy water, the Buddha mind is found in the muddied mind. Only when a person is liberated from the idea of virtue and not virtue, only then can a person renounce.

On the Streets of New Delhi
This is Day 5 on the busy streets of New Delhi. We are definitely ready to move on and get out of Delhi in a few days. In this video, we talk about how we are beginning to make some local connections and the infatuation that the local boys have for blonde haired, blue eyed women (a.k.a Frances).
GANGTOK Food Tour - ORGANIC Vegetable Market Tour + HUGE Himalayan Breakfast + BIHARI Aloo Chura
► Subscribe to Delhi Food Walks:
Nestled in the lap of Eastern Himalayas, Sikkim is a gift of Nature. The gigantic mountains, wooded hillside, verdant valleys, torrential rivers, pleasant climes and friendly locals can clearly rejuvenates any weary soul. The state with deep ecological ethos is India’s first fully organic state. The more we delved into its scenic grandeur, the more curious we became about its food traditions. Finally after a long wait we embarked on a gastronomic journey across the state. For this expedition, we were super elated to collaborate a brilliant travel and tour company Our guest.in. For the Gangtok leg of the journey we were joined by two amazing hosts from Our Guest team, Prerna and Abigail.
Since Gangtok is the starting point of most of the expeditions in Sikkim, we commenced our food tour from here itself. On reaching here the city welcomes you with its clean, pedestrian friendly, pleasant cosmopolitan appearance. Bracing ourselves for the mercurial weather condition, we began our tour with a visit to the DIRECTORATE OF HANDICRAFT & HANDLOOM, the center that preserve and promote the state’s traditional arts and crafts. There was so much to see and buy. From there we went to M G Marg, which is the city most happening place. It is the main shopping hub in the city that is lined with quaint restaurants serving some amazing dishes. Our first stop here was The Local Cafe. Its cosy setting was brimming with people and irresistible aroma. The food here was clearly influenced by the traditional flavours. We loved their Tibetan Sandwich, Aloo Dum and Gorkha Pizza. All of them had some quintessential elements of the eclectic native cuisine.
Next we popped up a paan from Dukhi Pan shop and moved ahead to try the iconic snacks Aloo Chura. Chachaji is a celebrity in this field as his Aloo chura is legendary.
Our next stop was organic vegetable market Lal Bazaar. Prerna introduced us to some of the popular local veggies. It was a delightful place. From there we went to Baker’s Cafe. Their Lemon Madeleine, Irish Coffee and Blueberry crumble were great.
The penultimate stop was another favourite place Nimtho. And the last destination was Abigail’s home where we tried a scrumptious spread of some signature korean dishes that is part of her kitchen to table start up EYHO. Hope you enjoy the video.

Ethnic/Tribal Food Series: Rabha Tribe, Assam | Silkworms + Red Ant Eggs + Rice Beer
► Subscribe to Delhi Food Walks:
► More street food in Assam:
Starting this week onward Delhi Food walks brings you a new series named Ethnic Food Tour series that catalogues our food explorations across the diverse and rich tribal panorama of our country and beyond.
It commences with the rustic cuisine of the Rabha tribe from Bongaigaon, Assam. Their meal is hued with the unique earthy notes as they are primarily procured from the forests. For this, we visited the Ujan Rabhapara village in Kakoijana in Bongaigaon district of Assam along with our brilliant hosts Chayanika, Sishir and Risha whose insights helped us get familiar with the new culture with ease.
En route to the village, we stopped at a local household to try the traditional Assamese jolpan. It is the umbrella term for the traditional breakfast dishes that the locals relish daily. The eclectic range of dishes under the jolpan are primarily rice-based. We tried the most elementary of them i. e the Sira Doi gur and boondi laddo. It was such a comforting combination.
After a short drive, we reached ujan Rabhapara, a place known for white langurs. Nestled amidst the green canopy of the kakoijana forest expanse, this quaint sleepy village is home to the Rabhas.
Along with our hosts Chayanika, Sisir, Risha and Sanjib Sharma we meet the welcoming womenfolk from the village who had gathered to cook a traditional Rabha meal for us. since agriculture based activity are the mainstay of their livelihood, naturally their cuisine is dominated by the components from the same.
Hence it not a surprise that they it includes rice which is the staple, various local herbs meats, fishes and insects. Bugs and insects like the silkworm, redant , grasshoppers etc. are the delicacies that define their cuisine.
Another important element of the rabha cuisine is the local rice beer that is brewed in almost all households and are consumer not just on occasions but daily.
During our explorations we tried some of their delicacies dishes that are prepared at the households on a regular basis. The highlights of the meal were Chokoth rice beer, country chicken cooked with rice flour batter and silkworm and red ant eggs.
We are truly grateful to our amazing hosts for taking us through the meal with so much enthusiasm and patience.

Beginner's Guide to India
In this guide to India for beginners, Wild Frontiers founder Jonny Bealby talks about two perfect destinations for the first-time visitor - Rajasthan and Kerala.
Rajasthan, Delhi and the Taj Mahal
Dealing with Rajasthan first, there are very good reasons why over half of all first timers travel here. Firstly it's close to Delhi where there are excellent flight connections and which is itself a fascinating city. A veritable tale of two cities Delhi combines the busy hustle bustle of the dramatic Moghul Old Town -- with its narrow alleys, its markets and mosques - with the sublime New Town, where quiet parks and tree lined avenues are peppered by some of the country's most magnificent architecture. From here you can travel easily, either by car or train, down to Agra where most go to visit the essential and truly amazing Taj Mahal.
And from here, either travelling via the tiger park at Ranthambore -- which does offer one of the best chances in the world to see a tiger in the wild -- making up the third stop in the triangle, there's the quintessential Rajput town of Jaipur with its bustling bazaar, its famous palace of the winds and the nearby Amber Fort. And that in itself makes a 7 to 10 day holiday.
But if you have a bit more time and want to scratch a little deeper into what is arguable India's most colourful state, from here there are a number of other routings that can take you to some of the Rajasthan's more wonderful offbeat converted Rajput palace hotels. Right now I'm at just such a place, called Castle Bijaipur, from which you can ride the Marwari Horses, go for bicycling rides or just enjoy a bit of relaxation by the pool. There are many such properties in this part of India which you can mix up with other famous towns like Pushkar, Bundi or Jodhpur.
And a great place to finish your trip to Rajasthan is the lake city of Udaipur. Sitting on the banks of the beautiful Lake Picola, Udaipur is a stunning place, packed with impressive palaces, temples and shops; it's easy to navigate and walk around and is often referred to as the Venice of the East. Not only is this one of my favourite towns in India it also has very convenient flight connections back to London, meaning you can spend your last night here -- having dinner at one of the wonderful rooftop restaurant -- and bounce through Delhi without being forced to spend an extra night there.
VTC: Rajasthan is India's most colourful state, it has most of the country's must see attractions, and some of her best hotels.
If you like to travel in a small group our Taj, Temples and Tigers would tick all these boxes as would our India in Slow Motion if you like your travels a bit more off the beaten track; And if you like to travel privately give us a call and one of our expert travel planners will be happy to help design a trip especially for you.
Kerala and the South
However, if something else, perhaps a little less frenetic appeals, then why not head south to the beautiful state of Kerala, which is where I am now.
Kerala is a stunning state situated at the southern tip of the Indian subcontinent and if Rajasthan and the north represents and great place for travel, Kerala, with its beautiful beaches, its temple culture and its meandering backwater cruises, offers the chance to truly relax and enjoy a more traditional holiday.
A great routing here is to fly in to Bangalore, drive down through Mysore -- with its colourful market and immense palace -- to the beach. There are a number of fabulous properties dotted up and down the coast, and in my option none is more special that Neeleshwar Hermitage. Here you can relax, walk along the beach, enjoy truly delicious cuisine and take a backwater cruise.
Using these old converted rice barges to float through the tranquil back water canals is a quintessential part of a trip to the south. And from here you can continue down the coast to another of my favourite towns, Cochin, a place that hasn't changed much from when my mother lived here as a small girl. This route makes for a perfect 10 day holiday, but if you have a bit more time and want to turn your holiday into more of a travelling experience, you can head up to the hill stations of Ooti and Munnar and on into temple filled Tamil Nadu.
Rajasthan and Kerala are the ideal locations for the inquisitive traveller coming to India for the first time. We have a number of small group departures for those that don't wish to travel alone, and a team of experts back in London to help those of you looking for a tailored experience ready to help you create your ideal trip.

BEST Ramzan STREET Food Tour in HYDERABAD - MUST EAT Stone grilled Pathar ka GOSHT (Mutton)
Often referred to as the City of Pearls, Hyderabad is famous for its rich cultural heritage that co exists amidst a flourishing modern lifestyle. The vibrant local food scene in the city has been luring food enthusiast from all parts of the country. So in this fresh gastronomic journey we are at Hyderabad to sample the delectable and myriad fare that’s available on the lanes which are always bustling with food lovers. We are happy to make it during Ramzan as we got the opportunity to explore the slice of the culture and connections through some of the festive foods. It was a pleasure to have the graceful Sankalp Vishnu, a food critic and a food expert, as our host who enthusiastically walked us through the culinary tradition of the Old city. We have been truly enriched by his cooperation.
The first thing we tried was a common snack called the Patti Samosa. These small crisp patties were filled with a tasty onion and corn mixture. The name is derived from the long rectangular strips of pastry sheets that is used for making these samosas.
Next went to a joint selling Sevain, that’s thin vermicelli clustered into a spherical mass. They are mostly used for making sweet delicacies with milk, like the Sheer Khurma etc. and are a staple during Ramzan. They came in different varieties like plain, roasted, sweetened and salty.
While exploring the street adjacent to the Charminar we stopped by a vendor selling one of the popular sweetmeats, the Coconut Sweet, that’s commonly available all across the old city. This interesting thing was soft coconut burfi that had to be eaten along with pieces of fresh coconut. We simply loved the taste and texture of the whole combination.
The next thing Sankalp made us try was the crunchy slices of partially ripened Malgova Mangoes that had their skin intact. The sweetness of the fruit and the earthy saltiness of rocksalt sprinkled on top made a playful summertime treat.
Then we went ahead to try the Hyderabad famous Pathar ke Gosht at the popular Al Farooj Sonu Kebabs. The stone grilled marinated mutton pieces were tender, delicious and distinctly flavourful. We also tried their Chicken Majestic which was a unique cumin, red chillies, turmeric and curd based dish. The final thing we tried at this place was the super yummy and crunchy Sevain Chicken. This deep fried snacks was crisp on the outside and soft inside.
From there we went on to try Marag, a Hyderabad special rich, creamy, smooth , greasy and delectable mutton broth.
While ambling down the lanes across the Charminar we came across a cycle borne vendor selling egg, chicken and onion samosas. The boiled egg ones were really unique and mooriesh. We tried it for the first time and loved it.
The next destination was Nimrah café and backery, the most iconic joints near the Charminar. Its Irani Chai and the yummy assortment of biscuits especially the Moon and Osmania biscuits were worth the reputation. We also loved the Ramzan special Jahangir which resembled the Gulab Jamun in taste though it was much drier.
We then grabbed a Paan and went ahead to try the Falooda and Lassi at the very popular Matwala Doodh Wala. Both of them were luscious and refreshing.
Next place was hotel Nayaab, a famous non veg joint. There we tried the Dum ka keema, Malai paya and Mutton Dalcha. All the dishes were super delicious. We also got the opportunity to get inside the kitchen and oversee the preparations.
With dinner done right, it was time for desserts. So Sankalp took us to the Hameedi confectioners to relish the most unique and indulgent Jouzi halwa that has a very interesting history behind it. The coin shaped almond and cashew burfis were also good.
This gluttonous and brilliant journey across the old city of Hyderabad ended on an ice cream note. The soul satisfying Muti Flavour ice creams were natural and hand churned.
We sincerely thank our genial host Sankalp for this insightful, enthusiastic and scrumptious food tour.
