EXPLORING CROATIA: A tour of the beautiful ISLAND and TOWN of HVAR
SUBSCRIBE: - Hvar, Croatia, a walking tour of the town. Vic Stefanu, vstefanu@yahoo.com. Hvar, a Croatian island in the Adriatic Sea, is best known as a summer resort. Highlights of the port town Hvar include its 13th-century walls, a hilltop fortress and a main square anchored by the Renaissance-era Hvar Cathedral. The island also features beaches such as Dubovica and inland lavender fields. Boat excursions serve the nearby Pakleni Islands, which have secluded beaches and coves.
Croatia is an Eastern European country with a long coastline on the Adriatic Sea. Encompassing more than a thousand islands, it's also crossed by the Dinaric Alps. Its inland capital, Zagreb, is distinguished by its medieval Gornji Grad (Upper Town) and diverse museums. The major coastal city Dubrovnik has massive 16th-century walls encircling an Old Town with Gothic and Renaissance buildings.

HVAR, Croatia - It's all so beautiful.

While Hvar Town doesn’t lay claim to any beaches per se, just a hop across the water lands you on an archipelago that’s full of them. Named the Pakleni Islands, these largely-uninhabited mounds are fringed by secluded sand-and-pebble coves. And that’s not all they have to offer – there’s museums, one of the best nightclubs around and some decent snorkelling, too.
Hvar Town certainly has looks on its side. It’s actually considered to be one of the most beautiful places in Croatia. Its gothic palaces and squares are framed in by 13th-century walls, which slope downwards to the Adriatic Sea’s azure waters. See it from above with a trip to the Spanish Fortress. It’s perched high on a hill overlooking the terracotta rooftops, the marina and the pine-cloaked islets that dot the shores.
St Stephen’s Square is at the town’s centre. This long rectangular plaza was formed when an inlet was filled in and paved over. There’s a cathedral with a tall bell tower at its helm, while street cafes line up either side. Wander south along the bay and you’ll come to the 15th-century Franciscan Monastery – make sure you go inside to get a glimpse of the impressive Last Supper painting in the dining hall.
Top 3 things to do in Hvar:
Kayak tour:
If you want to be more adventurous and enjoy a bit more of the water then you shouldn’t miss the half day guided kayak tour of Hvar island. It will allow you to take in the sun, take in the beauty of the Adriatic Sea’s pleasant blue waters. The route is often shadowed by the tall pine trees, giving a balance of sun and shade. Then, maneuver through the narrow straits and along islands where you can enjoy your lunch on one of the small hidden pebble beaches. While you’re there, have fun swimming and snorkeling.
Wine tasting:
If wine and great food is more of your thing, opt for this wine and gastronomy tour. You’ll visit actual wineries, learn how it is made and appreciate the local wine. In addition, you can sample fresh cheese and meat, prepared from the region as part of your dinner.
Secret village:
Turn left at the orange church on the winding road in Zavala as you descend to the beach, and take the unsealed road 3km until you come to one of Hvar’s prettiest – and least-visited villages – Gromin Dolac. Plenty of gorgeous old stone here with pretty beaches to match. With almost nobody to share with. You definitely need to add this to your things to do in Hvar list.

Hvar (pronounced [xv̞âːr]; local Chakavian dialect: Hvor or For, Greek: Pharos, Φάρος, Latin: Pharia, Italian: Lesina) is a Croatian island in the Adriatic Sea, located off the Dalmatian coast, lying between the islands of Brač, Vis and Korčula. Approximately 68 km (42.25 mi) long, with a high east-west ridge of Mesozoic limestone and dolomite, the island of Hvar is unusual in the area for having a large fertile coastal plain, and fresh water springs. Its hillsides are covered in pine forests, with vineyards, olive groves, fruit orchards and lavender fields in the agricultural areas. The climate is characterized by mild winters, and warm summers with many hours of sunshine.[2] The island has 11,103 residents, making it the 4th most populated of the Croatian islands.
Hvar’s location at the center of the Adriatic sailing routes has long made this island an important base for commanding trade up and down the Adriatic, across to Italy and throughout the wider Mediterranean. It has been inhabited since pre-historic times, originally by a Neolithic people whose distinctive pottery gave rise to the term Hvar culture, and later by the Illyrians. The ancient Greeks founded the colony of Pharos in 384 BC on the site of today’s Stari Grad, making it one of the oldest towns in Europe. They were also responsible for setting out the agricultural field divisions of the Stari Grad Plain, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In medieval times, Hvar (city) rose to importance within the Venetian Empire as a major naval base. Prosperity brought culture and the arts, with one of the first public theatres in Europe, nobles’ palaces and many fine communal buildings.
The 16th century was an unsettled time, with the Hvar Rebellion, coastal raids by pirates and the Ottoman army from the mainland, resulting in some unusual fortified buildings on the northern shore to protect the local population. After a brief time under Napoleonic rule, the island became part of the Austrian Empire, a more peaceful and prosperous time. On the coast, harbours were expanded, quays built, fishing and boat building businesses grew. At the same time, the island’s wine exports increased, along with lavender and rosemary production for the French perfume industry. However, this prosperity did not continue into the 20th century as wooden sailing boats went out of fashion, and the phylloxera blight hit wine production. Many islanders left to make a new life elsewhere.
Jagodna beach between the villages of Ivan Dolac and Sveta Nedilja
One industry, tourism, has however continued to grow and is now a significant contributor to the island’s economy. The formation of The Hygienic Association of Hvar in 1868 for the assistance of visitors to the island has been instrumental in developing an infrastructure of hotels, apartments, restaurants, marinas, museums, galleries and cafés. Today, the island of Hvar is a popular destination, consistently listed in the top 10 islands by Conde Nast Traveler magazine.

Hvar, Hrvatska /

WHAT REALLY HAPPENS IN HVAR? CROATIA PARTY ISLAND VLOG
So this is totally the wrong kind of content to be putting up in winter, which is totally my fault for taking so long to edit our Croatian summer holiday vlog! However if like me you are craving some sunshine (and Love Island 2020 is still at least a month away!) then you will probably find this a lovey break from bitterly cold weather right now!
When we decided to document our time in Hvar, the intention was to really talk through what we got up to and give recommendations, however watching this you will see that that didn't quite happen, and this is much more of a little time capsule / show reel for us to remember the absolutely unreal time we had on this gorgeous island.
Being in the sun with my 3 best friends are up there with the best memories I have of my 20's, and Hvar is probably number one. If you haven't visited this island before, (YOU SHOULD!) but essentially its a mix of wholesomeness and partying all the same time. I hope that comes through on this vlog, but if not, you can at least laugh out our ridiculousness - enjoy!

10 Things to do in Hvar, Croatia Travel Guide Video Transcript:
We have finally made it to one of my dream destinations. We're in Hvar, Croatia so and oh my it is beautiful. Today we have blue skies so we're just going to run around like crazy to show you guys Hvar.
As you probably already know, we never start sightseeing without a good meal, so the first item on our list was to find some breakfast. This proved to be a little tricky considering we were visiting during low season, but after a few false starts we settled down at BB Club for shakshuka, omelettes, nutella crepes and cappuccinos.
With bellies full, we were ready explore and our eyes were set on the fortress, which is the focal point when you gaze up from the Old Town.
Reaching the fortress means walking straight uphill, but there are a few scenic stops along the way, including a beautiful park, a seemingly abandoned church, and plenty of lookouts where you can admire the town and the harbour.
After visiting the fort, we came back to the Old Town and decided to go on a little walk along the waterfront. We hadn’t packed any bathing suits and it was too late in the season to go for a swim, but Audrey was set on testing out the turquoise waters.
Continuing our wander through Hvar Town without a particular place or direction in mind, we then came across a medieval Venetian bell tower that we had noticed peeking through the buildings. The bell tower is part of the Ruins of the Dominican Monastery and St. Mark's Church, and while the structure is closed off, it’s still a cool landmark to visit.
We went to KOGO which is located in the main square just footsteps from St. Stephen’s Cathedral. They specialize in pizzas and pastas, and everything was so tasty!
Lastly, to finish up our 1-day tour of Hvar Town, we walked back to the marina, this time heading left in the direction of the Franciscan Monastery, where we were treated to a magical sunset complete with live music.
This is part of our Travel in Croatia video series showcasing Croatian food, Croatian culture and Croatian cuisine.
