Santa Fe—The Senate passed a bill to allow alcoholic beverages to be consumed in the gaming area of a racetrack that operates a gaming casino. Currently, liquor consumption is limited to lounge areas, making it difficult for the racinos to manage and guard all of the doors out of their lounges into the area with the gaming machines. Bill sponsor Senator Neville said alcoholic drinks would still not be sold, served or comped on the gaming floor, but people would be allowed to bring their drinks from the lounges to the age-restricted casino. He said this would help a $67 million dollar industry in the state that pays high taxes, over 26%, to manage its logistics.
“It takes a small army to police this for the racinos. They have guards at all of the doors to the lounge areas making it difficult to police. This will help them manage the situation better and make it a more pleasant environment for everyone,” Senator Neville said.
Racinos in the state include Sunland Park Racetrack, Ruidoso Downs and Zia Park Racetrack.
Senator Neville said the New Mexico Indian Gaming Compacts would not be affected by the proposed change in the racino operation.

Rocky Gulch New Mexico Cup Championship - Zia Park - October 26, 2014
That's Who capped a tremendous 2014 New Mexico Cup for trainer Joel Marr and jockey Alfredo Juarez Jr. in the Rock Gulch New Mexico Cup Championship. The trainer and jockey each won four races on the richest day of state-bred stakes racing in the United States that featured 12 races for New Mexico-bred Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses worth a total of $2 million.
