Adam Maalouf ft. Apoorva Mudgal & Pawan Benjamin I Tere Ishq Nachaya
NYC-based multi-instrumentalist and composer Adam Maalouf put together a series of collaborative cross-genre acoustic performances for us in Brooklyn recently, leading the way with his instrument of choice: the Pantam (aka Hang drum, Hand Pan).
This first performance, entitled Tere Ishq Nachaya is a collaboration with Apoorva Mudgal on Vocals and Pawan Benjamin on Bansuri (Indian Flute).
Together they explore the deep mysticism of Urdu/Punjabi Sufi poetry, Ghazal, and Qawwaali in a stripped down rendition of Sufi Poet Bulle Shah’s immortal poem, ‘Tere Ishq Nachaya’, creating a succinct yet rich soundscape.

Adam Maalouf
Adam Maalouf is a NYC-based multi-instrumentalist and composer. His cross-genre style of music forms a common thread between the cultures of the East and West. Maalouf’s playing style represents the cross-pollination of diverse influences, including western classical, Jazz, Arabic, and Indian classical music. Adam is currently performing music from his electronic album “Path of Time”, as well as his global acoustic project “East River”.
Apoorva Mudgal
Born and raised in North India, Apoorva Mudgal is a Hindustani/Sufi singer-songwriter whose musical expression brings the deepest mysticism of Urdu/Punjabi Sufi poetry, Ghazal and Qawwaali to the stripped down simplicity of an acoustic guitar. It is this silence that breathes meaning to melody, in her soulful voice. Her music is inspired by the works of Sufi poets like Amir Khusrow, Bulleh Shah, Sultan Bahu and the musicality of legendary singers like Farida Khanum, Abida Parveen and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. She frequently collaborates with world musicians, marrying her sound to the echoes of hand pans, bells and world percussion.
Pawan Benjamin
As both an accomplished Saxophonist and Bansuri flute player, Pawan Benjamin stands at the intersection of profound musical traditions. Rooted in Jazz and Improvisation, his pursuit of learning later led him to the Bansuri Flute and a deep study of Nepali Folk and Indian Classical Music. His unique perspective into these legacies of music has allowed him to work with a myriad of world-class artists, and perform and teach around the world.
Pawan has performed alongside artists such as Roscoe Mitchell, Reggie Workman, Ranjit Barot, Bill T. Jones, Taufiq Qureshi, Rez Abbasi, Marc Cary, and others.
Performance credits include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Newport Festival, the Kennedy Center, the Rubin Museum of Art, Lincoln Center, the Mondriaan Jazz Festival, the Bimhuis, the NCPA in Mumbai, Goa International Jazz Festival, and more.

Bernardo Bertolucci chose Raju to play the role of 'Little Buddha'
This is Paharganj, a crowded suburb in West Delhi packed with small tenements and people. Here, in a one-room shack lives Raju and his family of 15. Four years ago when he was polishing and shining shoes in Kathmandu, a casting agent of Italian celluloid master Bernardo Bertolucci chose him to play the little Buddha. Bertolucci's 1994 film made Raju celebrity of sorts. His role was not memorable, the film did not become a hit but the boy still had stars in his eyes. If there was a film that could put him in the international league, Little Buddha was it, but it never happened. Raju lays the blame on Suresh Verma, alias baba, a US based Indian agent with whom he signed a contract.
Raju says I could have made it in the films if I had a good manager. But baba asked a lot for my siging fees so no one came as there were few films like the Jungle Book where I was offered work. Since he asked for a hefty amount so they shunned him away.

is not being told today? In this talk he critiques present-day narratives, examines the evidence from a variety of scientific disciplines, and presents a unique, strong and compelling case for an untold prehistory of India.
