Te Aroha NZ - Cruise In 2017: Classic Restos Series 35
400 classic cars descend on Te Aroha NZ, just out of Auckland for the 2017 Cruise-In. Fletch talks with proud owners about their cars and their origin, first up is Anja with a 1955 F100 Truck in original condition except for what's under the bonnet. The exterior patina belies the power plant beneath. Then Jim with one of his 12 classics, a 1934 Ford 5 Window Coupe, formerly a stock car that he has rebuilt over five years. Selwyn proudly reflects on a 10-year full body restoration by himself and his son of a very rare 1954 VW Split Window Kombi Barndoor, that won the VW Nationals in Auckland this year, a beautiful restoration. Last but by no means least is Alex's beautiful 1959 Chevrolet Impala 2 door with a caravan in tow with a matching colour scheme. This is a very impressive event in a beautiful part of NZ, one to keep in mind for next year.
Te Aroha Holiday Park
Just thought I'd give you a little overview of the Egg caravan at Te Aroha Holiday Park.
They double booked me (not sure how as it's all on the internet now?) and this is what I got for my money. Had to get up at 1am and sleep in the car as it was blowing about 30Knts and the wind and slight rain was just coming into the gaping hole where a window should have been.
They even said it would be repaired before night fall when I checked in and they told me the bad news about double booking. But I was out at the local Pub (Palace Hotel, maybe I should have just stayed there??) having dinner that night and the guy that checked me in was there having a drink, I asked him again how my window install was going and he said it was being done as we speak, but when I got back to the holiday park as 9.30pm that night, nothing had been done.
I did phone the owner and she apologised and gave me a full refund for my stay.
A quote straight from there web site about the facilities in the caravans.

Soo Tru!... Sew True - Whangarei Art Museum
Soo tru !...Sew True -- THE Runway Show 2013
Last year I was very proud to initiate a local community charity event annually onto the WAM calendar.
Last February our chosen charity was Project Promise with local Whangarei designers strutting the catwalk in Project Promise Project Runway. The event proved so successful and so professionally staged we ran it again in March at the Whangarei Library to engage a different audience and cater for those who had missed out. It remains a hit streamed on Youtube: youtube.com/watch?v=zyejEHQ43UO
Again this year the team at Addiction Hair in Whangarei, Andrea and Joel have stepped up to co-ordinate a new show this year called: Soo Tru! ... Sew True - The Runway Show on 13th February at 6.30 at the art museum. Many of the designers and models from last year are again donating their time to raise funds for a very deserving charity in our community. This year at the art museum we are anxious to support the public momentum for a change in the domestic violence statistics in our community. Our chosen charities for the Runway show in 2013 are Women's Refuges' Tryphina House and Te Puna o Te Aroha. The title of this year's show was created both to reflect the stories of the local designers we are promoting and to allude to the wider stories of anguish and violence against women and children in the community. This will be a fun and fashion-forward event underpinned by a serious purpose.
Last month I participated in the public march through the Whangarei CBD to protest again the recent deaths of vulnerable women in the district. It was a very moving and empowering occasion. There were many men marching led by the Mayor Morris Cutforth. I marched next to a man who fully acknowledged he had just been released from Ngawha Prison for violence against his daughter. I have been a victim of violence in the city myself. When I was setting up the art museum in Cafler Park late in 1995 I was beaten up by a gang of youths in Forum North in front of Customer Services and some months later again in Rathbone Street - again in broad daylight and in public. I had been 'targeted' it was revealed by Police in Court. It is a shocking and humiliating experience -- life altering for my personal worldview now as it is for anyone confronted by inexplicable violence. This is the reason I chose Women's Refuge to be benefactors of this years WAM Runway show.
The Mayor Morris Cutforth will be attending the Runway show along with the Mayoress and other VIP's including fashion design icon Doris de Pont ONZM recently honoured for services to New Zealand fashion in the New Years Honours List. Local designers on the runway this year include By Design -- Julie Pyle; Charlotte Davidson, Jessie Rose, Samantha Wakelin, Simon Wakelin Menswear; Tailor Made Style and fashion accessories by Steve Haywood Jewellery and Rua Paul and with Hair by Joel Hornell and Andrea McKay - Addiction Hair and make-up by Personna Beauty Whangarei.
Many new sponsors have come on board this year - Calder's Print, Kim Crawford Wines, the Northland Youth Theatre and Personna Beauty Aotearoa.
This year's charity Runway show is designed to complement our current Endless Summer Festival Exhibition HOME SEWN Original NZ Fashion curated by the NZ Fashion Museum, Auckland.
Hui Aroha tribute ‘incredibly emotional sight’
History came alive in Gisborne on Saturday when the 100-strong guard of honour in the Maori Pioneer Battalion commemoration marched through the city in a stirring and emotional tribute parade.
It commemorated 100 years to the day that 300 members of the battalion returned to Tairawhiti from World War One and were welcomed by “the Hui Aroha” at the racecourse.
A man standing on the parade route by the police station summed it up simply.
“What a spectacle. It’s just so moving,” he said with tears in his eyes.
Many hundreds of people lined the parade route from Te Poho-o-Rawiri Marae to Kelvin Park, where the crowd swelled to around 2000, including many families, on the lawn outside C Company House.
The event included the second launch of Doctor Monty Soutar’s book on the battalion (see story on page 3).
“This has been a fabulous occasion that gives mana to the book and the other way round,” said Walton Walker, the chairman of parade organisers Nga Tama Toa Trust.
“We are absolutely thrilled. It’s all been quite special. What a magnificent sight.”
The marchers, aged from 12 to 60, were immaculately kitted out in WW1 uniforms, with Lee Enfield rifles at the slope and battalion colours flying. They marched at the quick step to the beat of a single drum.
The crunch of their hobnailed boots echoed as they went by, singing It’s A Long Way to Tipperary in English and Maori.
Doctor Soutar was thrilled with the way the parade went.
“My satisfaction is seeing the pleasure and pride on the faces of these men.”
He paid tribute to the work of drill instructor Rayner Jahnke, who in turn said “the men did themselves and their whanau proud”.
“For men who have only had on average about eight hours practice, they did fantastically well,” Mr Jahnke said.
Gisborne police officer and former Poverty Bay rugby representative Jamie Hutana was a marker in the front rank of the 100.
“It was awesome to be part of it . . . it was special and emotional, knowing the battalion did it 100 years ago.”
Seventeen-year-old Costa Blackman, from Tolaga Bay said it was “an honour and a privilege . . . a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to represent my tipuna”.
The youngster in the parade, 12-year-old Tumanako McGhie from Gisborne, was beaming when he said: “We were all so keen. It felt really good to be part of it.”
The battalion included Maori, Pakeha and Pacific Islanders, and that was represented in the parade.
Willie Apiata VC followed the marchers in a vintage car, accompanied by the nieces of Moana Ngarimu VC, who carried with them his gallantry medal. It was the first time both awards had been in the same place together.
Defence Minister Ron Mark and Sir Peter Jackson also attended.
Dr Soutar thanked Sir Peter, whose WingNut Films team provided the uniforms at a cost of $250,000.
“Much of that cost came out of Sir Peter’s own pocket,” said Dr Soutar. “Without him and his staff this could not have happened.”
Sir Peter said he was deeply moved by the entire process . . . “the training of these young guys, their marching and the people carrying photographs of their ancestors”.
“Gisborne is probably the only place in the world that could pull this off. It was an incredibly emotional sight.”
Doctor Soutar said the plan for the parade had always been “audacious . . . but we had God on our side with the weather”.
Following the ceremonies, the parade moved back to the marae via the Wi Pere Monument and Heipipi Park, including further haka and waiata.
A wreath was laid at the monument in honour of Wi Pere who was instrumental in the formation of the battalion.

Taiaha to serve as kaitiaki over Meng and his whanau
The presentation of an elaborately-carved taiaha was a feature of a civic farewell for Mayor Meng Foon and wife Ying last night. The taiaha was presented by Mr Foon’s successor as mayor, Rehette Stoltz.
Master of Ceremonies Walter Walsh said it recognised the core values of aroha, manaakitanga and rangitiratanga Mr Foon displayed, and the work he and his family had done and continued to do for the Gisborne district and East Coast communities.
The four eyes on the taiaha represented Nga Hau e Wha (the four winds), signalled that no matter where Mr Foon and his family travelled, this taiaha would always call them home — just like the four winds of Tawhirimatea.
The surface pattern of the rakau (wooden stick) was called Raperape and spoke of the flowing water and was a “moko-tuku-pu” of Tangaroa.
With Gisborne being a city vastly surrounded by moana (open water, ocean), it only made sense to adorn the taonga with a pattern symbolic to Tangaroa and symbolic of the East Coast.
The taiaha would serve as a kaitiaki (guardian/protector) over Meng and his whanau and always remind him that no matter where he goes, home is where the heart is on the East Coast, said Mr Walsh.
The presentation was made at the start of a two-hour function in the new wharekai (dining hall) at Te Poho-o-Rawiri at which tributes to Mr Foon were paid by various members of the community in a function kept moving along by Mr Walsh.
It included a number of speakers representing all iwi of the district, as well as the Tongan and Chinese communities and others.
The speakers were supported by waiata performed by Horouta wananga.
Newly-appointed Race Relations Commissioner Mr Foon delighted the audience with a song in Cantonese.
A number of speakers praised Mayoress Ying Foon, who was presented with a bouquet.

Waitangi Tribunal hears Māori war veterans’ grievances
They put their lives on the line to fight for the honour and freedom of NZ, but today, they claim the government has neglected an obligation to provide support for their special needs. That's the crux of a claim brought to the Waitangi Tribunal by war veterans. Today the hearing resumed at Wairaka Marae, Whakatāne.
