Tea Tasting at Zealong - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand
Day 16: Today we are taking a tour and tea tasting at Zealong in Hamilton! Zealong is New Zealand’s only tea plantation and today’s activity for New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year!
Yesterday - Day 15 -
Tomorrow – Day 17 –
About this video:
Today we are in Hamilton in the Waikato region of New Zealand, where New Zealand’s only tea plantation is: Zealong! We hit the road to the Zealong Tea Estate for a surprisingly affordable tour and tea tasting.
Our guide tells us the history, as well as the process of tea making at Zealong Tea Estate. We learn how tea made its way from Asia to New Zealand before going into the tasting rooms to taste some Zealong Tea! It’s definitely a new experience for us – tasting tea at Zealong with many different cups, saucers and other utensils. It’s like a wonderful science experiment.
We taste around seven different fabulous teas at Zealong then do into the dining room for some amazing afternoon tea at Zealong: cakes, pastries, scones and so much more!
The evening ends at the Hamilton Central Backpaclers right in the city centre of Hamilton in the Waikato region of New Zealand. Thanks for joining us today! See you tomorrow!

Allan Titford jailed: Te Roroa vindicated after 20 years
His lies fuelled years of racial tension in the north, but this week Allan Titford's web of deceit caught up with him. Titford became a household name in the 90s after his Aranga farm became the centre of a treaty dispute, he won public sympathy with claims Te Roroa protestors torched two of his properties. But yesterday Titford was convicted on arson charges, and more serious crimes including rape.

Kapa Haka Regionals, Auckland Aotea Square
On Saturday inside the Aotea Centre many kapa haka performers came to contend in a fierce competition to represent Auckland at the Te Matatini Traditional Māori Performing Arts Festival. I was lucky to catch this amazing group of giving their wonderful permanence in the public at Auckland Aotea Square.
I think this group is Ngā Tūmanako, current national champions.
The information below is from the website
As part of Auckland Live Summer in the Square.
On this weekend more than 500 of Tāmaki Makaurau’s best kapa haka performers will contend in a fierce competition to represent Auckland at the Te Matatini Traditional Māori Performing Arts Festival.
Inside the Aotea Centre will be epic performances and rivalry as current national champions Ngā Tumanako are challenged by former victors, Te Waka Huia and Te Roopu Manutaki in an intense battle of kapa haka.
Outside you can soak up the atmosphere in Aotea Square where there’ll be kai, waiata and the occasional surprise performance by some of Aotearoa’s top kapa haka performers.
Nau piki mai rā! Ngā kapa haka o Tāmaki, ki te hoe!

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Helen Clark, New Zealand Prime Minister:
It's something we've been wanting for a long time and something the Egyptian government has encouraged us to do. Obviously when you're in the site in Cairo you're at the very heart of the leadership of the Arab world, the Arab League is here. We look for insights from the Egyptian government into what's happening in the region and of course we're interested in building the relationship in many ways across the trade and economic, the cultural and other forms of cooperation.

STORYLINE
New Zealand's Prime Minister, Helen Clark, was in Cairo on Thursday for the official opening of the New Zealand Embassy in Egypt.
Accompanied by a group of traditional Maori performers, Clark entered the embassy building amid a ceremonial Powhiri, a traditional Maori welcoming ceremony, as is customary in New Zealand and to New Zealand visitors overseas.
By establishing a New Zealand embassy in Cairo, Clark said we're recognising the importance to New Zealand of the relationship with Egypt as a way of engaging closely with the Middle East.
Being present here in Cairo, in this way will enable us to gain far more insights into this very critical region for the world, Clark told guests and officials at the ceremony.
Clark said opening a base in Cairo was something the Egyptian government had encouraged New Zealand to do for some time.
When you're in the site in Cairo you're at the very heart of the leadership of the Arab world, the Arab League is here. We look for insights from the Egyptian government into what's happening in the region, Clark told AP.
Clark's Egyptian visit is part of a two week journey around the world visiting heads of state and attending meetings.
The New Zealand Prime Minister visited Uganda for the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting and Germany where she met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Coromandel New Zealand Accommodation, events & activities
Coromandel New Zealand Accommodation, events & activities Beaches & Forests on Coromandel Peninsula
A binocular’s view across the gulf from Auckland, The Coromandel is everything that a big city isn’t. With a mountainous interior cloaked in native rainforest and more than 400 kilometres of dazzling white sand beaches, it is rustic, unspoiled and relaxed.Activities and attractions are plentiful, from fishing and diving to hiking and cycling. You might choose skydiving in Whitianga or a guided sea kayak tour around the coast. For the more adventurous there's Sleeping God Canyon, a 300m vertical descent down a set of waterfalls.
You could wander among the coolness of the pristine bush; The Coromandel is a walker’s paradise. Explore the relics from the area's gold mining heritage, follow the Karangahake Gorge and Coromandel Coastal Walkway, hike the Pinnacles, or hop on your bike and cycle the Hauraki Rail Trail. Or simply sit and relax in a warm bubbling pool at Hot Water Beach where you can dig your own spa two hours either side of low tide. Don't miss the spectacular Cathedral Cove, the jewel of a protected marine reserve. The Coromandel is the home of many artists and craftspeople. Pop into their studios – you’re welcome to visit – and pick up a unique piece of art or pottery to take home with you. It’s also the home of many events and concerts that draw locals and visitors alike to this remarkable place.Staying in The Coromandel is easy. Most of the accommodation providers have found themselves spectacular locations so whether your tastes are for the upmarket or the simple, you’ll find a room – or tent site – with an amazing view. It's just over an hour from Auckland airport, Rotorua and Hobbiton, and can be reached by road, air, or ferry. Thus it’s exciting to hear whispers of adventure sports in the shaft and to see the development of the Gold Discovery Centre, to commemorate and inform of the region’s proud history. Until this opens in September 2014 and the mine closes, take the excellent goldmine tour to get up close and personal with the extraction process, see the majestic Cornish pumphouse and walk around Martha’s 4km perimeter. This is New Zealand, so inevitably there’s a full panorama of stunning scenery and, considering she’s a mine, Martha ain’t too ugly at all.
