Téléphérique 1 (Cablecar) - La Grave, France
Téléphérique translates to cablecar or cableway in English. It is often referred to as the tram or the gondola but it is really a pulse gondola with tram-like towers and line gear. It was installed in 1976 by PHB which is the same company that made the old Sugarloaf Gondola. It travels up the mountain at 6.5 m/s (about 1280 fpm) and carries over 440 people per hour. There are six pulses of five cabins so you slow down twice on the way up. Once at the P1 station and again between P1 and the top. Although they are 6 person cabins, if you want to squeeze 7 in there no one will stop you. We could see this lift get new cabins in the future but it sounds like most of this beast will remain.
Recorded Feb. 6th, 2019.
Téléphérique 2 (Cablecar) - La Grave, France
This is the upper gondola at La Grave. It was installed in 1977 by PHB, just one year after the first gondola was installed. Along with Téléphérique 1, this lift is often referred to as the tram or the gondola but it is really a pulse gondola with tram-like towers and line gear. It moves at a quick 7.5 m/s (1476 fpm) but only transports about 460 people per hour, assuming full speed. There are six pulses of five cabins so you slow down twice on the way up to allow loading/unloading at the top and bottom. It rises 2536 feet and provides access to long backcountry style runs.
Recorded Feb. 13th, 2019.

Téléphérique 1 (P1 to Base) - La Grave, France
At La Grave below the P1 station, most of the terrain is unskiable. It's extremely cliffy and rocky. At the end of the day, we usually come here instead of making the trek around the massive cliffs. **Please note: during the upload to Youtube the audio was sped up. The lift itself is moving at the actual pace. Sorry for any confusion.
Glacier Lift (Platter) - La Grave, France
The Glacier Ski-Lift was installed back in 1989 by Creissels. This lift allows summit access to the glacier and brings you back down into the main bowls. As you can see, the towers are floating because the huge ice glacier under the snow moves around so much. The drive and return terminals are placed on top of rocks that have no movement. Over the years the glacier has receded so much due to global warming, that they now have to spend two months every year plowing snow up to the lift so the platters reach the ground. They also need to fill the huge crevasses that cover the entire glacier. Sounds like a lot of work for a lift that can't open until February and only operates when weather is perfect. We could see this replaced by another gondola in several years. The full design speed for this lift is 3 m/s (just under 600 fpm) and carries 560 people per hour. This was the first platter/pomalift I've ever been on and I have to say, these are much more comfortable than any t-bar I've ever ridden. It will be interesting to see what La Grave does with this area in the future.

Snowcat Tow - La Grave, France
For this and next week, I’ll be shredding La Grave in France. This video is the Snow Cat Tow that brings you from Gondola/Tram Stage 2 up to the Glacier Ski Lift (Platter/Pomalift). It’s a really cool concept to be pulled behind one of these beasts, although it’s a bit overkill for a ski area that tries to be natural. La Grave might be replacing this and the Glacier lift with a new gondola in the future, but we'll just have to wait and see. Overall though, this place is friggin sick.
