A winter's drive through Norwood, Colorado - western slope, Rocky Mountains
Although a bit wasteful and polluting, I've always enjoyed a good road trip. Luckily many of my trips have served some kind of business purpose other than just idle cruising around the countryside. In this case I was on business along Colorado's western slope as I made a number of stops in small towns on state highways 141 and 145. The town of Norwood is about 580 kilometres (360 miles) west of Denver and offers access through some great winding and twisting canyon country.

Bridal Veil Falls // Telluride Colorado Dayhike
Our recent trip to Southwest Colorado started in one of the most beautiful mountains towns, Telluride. The Bridal Veil Falls Trail is located at the end of the box canyon surrounding Telluride. The trail follows a 4x4 road that switchbacks up to the falls. This road ends for vehicles just before the falls by a gate and only hikers/bikers are allowed further. Bridal Veil is the tallest freefalling water fall in Colorado and drops 365 feet. We clocked this hike at 6.1 miles and took us about 3 hours (with a very slow pace taking many pictures).
This is a great doable hike for most skill levels and comes with a great sense of accomplishment at the top of the falls. Get there early to avoid sun and crowds, especially if you're driving up since it gets more sketchy to park when more vehicles are on the trail.

Gatlinburg Mountain Coaster on-ride HD POV @60fps
Skip forward to 3:24 if you only want to watch the downhill portion of the ride..
At 2500 feet in length, this Wiegand alpine coaster is the shortest of the four alpine coasters in the area but still a very fun ride and well worth trying out. This video was filmed at full speed throughout the ride.
The Gatlinburg Mountain Coaster is located near Pigeon Forge in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
Also called mountain coasters, these gravity-operated rides installed on a hill or mountain utilizes a track made of stainless steel tubes. The sleds are designed to not come off of the track during the ride and riders control their speed by applying or releasing brakes connected to levers on each side of the sled.

Colorado prepper property with garden and irrigation water
If you are looking for a luxurious western Colorado off-grid retreat with complete Prepper property attributes, you need not look any further. The Red Cone Retreat was constructed with complete self-sufficiency in mind–inside AND out. The compound has one (1) share of Lone Cone Ditch water for irrigation which is piped underground in 4″ PVC to the property from a head gate located on the National Forest about 1/3 mile away. The ditch water is used to water the large fenced vegetable garden, complete with numerous fruit trees and also fills two small ponds for additional water storage. Water from the ponds can be pumped to water the numerous planted trees surrounding the off-grid retreat as well as the numerous flower gardens around the house and in the tranquility garden. A detached 4-car garage, with wood stove heat and insulated, provides plenty of room for storage of equipment, vehicles and tools. There is a 10 x 10 loafing shed and the property used to house the owner’s horses for incredible equestrian trail rides into the National Forest–right off of the property. A small greenhouse allows for winter vegetable gardening or starting vegetables prior to planting season.
Colorado Off-grid retreat offers excellent seasonal business opportunity
Another aspect to this self-sufficient Colorado off grid retreat is the camping area at the Red Cone Retreat. This area of the property was built to attract adventurous travelers and give them a taste of the western Colorado outdoors. The campground is secluded from the main house and consists of a kitchen building complete with 3 propane refrigerators a cook stove and dining area. In addition to the kitchen building there is also an outdoor barbecue pit, outdoor kitchen area–complete with running water and a sink and TWO indoor showers with a heated water supply. A campfire pit, wood fired hot tub, and horseshoe pit create and excellent place for guests to unwind after a long day of hiking or recreating through the property and neighboring National Forest. The lodging consists of a hard sided tent with wood stove, a canvas hunters tent with wood stove and 5 teepee sites situated in a beautiful mountain meadow. The camp could be run under separate management or could be managed in-house and would provide excellent income for this Colorado off-grid retreat. Located in GMU 70, the hunting in the surrounding area is excellent for elk, mule deer, turkey and black bear and the teepees, cabins, showers, and kitchen facilities–would make amazing accommodations for hunters.
JEM and Goosebumps Trail near Virgin Utah on fat bike 11-06-2014 (Mukluk and Me 05)
Riding my fat bike along the JEM and Goosebumps Trail near Virgin, Utah. Ride occurred on 11-06-2014. My first time on these trails. A lot of fun riding along the canyon rims. Goosebumps Trail is east of Gooseberry Trail. Goosebumps consist of some rock but mostly rolling trails. Good for beginners and up. Hope you like the video. A little slow at first but I pick it up part of the way through. Fat bikes grab the trail pretty good.

Colorado Experience: Mountain Biking
Colorado and the west are where American mountain biking began. From the Denver Athletic Club's Pikes Peak summit on bicycles in 1891, to Buffalo Soldiers riding to Yellowstone in 1897, mountain biking has long had a place in Colorado. Its modern debut came in 1978 when mountain biking pioneers from Marin County California visited Crested Butte's 2nd Klunker Tour. since then, Crested Butte has led the state in creating single track and inspiring other towns to cater to this now Olympic sport.
Sharing my favorite trail with an Olympian
Last year I had a BLAST riding with Sam Schultz (and Jordan Carr!) for a quick rip on Galbraith, and when Sam told me he’d again be in Bellingham, I was stoked to ride with him. I’d had a TON of long rides on my legs before this, and was feeling pretty under the weather. However, with how much fun we had last time, I figured no excuses, let’s ride again!!!

The Rock Garden, Mountain Biking Hall Ranch, Lower Bitterbrush Part II Lyons, CO
My Bike Explained:
Lyon, CO - Mountain Biking the Bitterbrush trail. With JF Rides, DesFit, and Jason Bikes.
After completing the Upper half of the Bitterbrush and Nelson Loop trails, it was time to get rowdy at Bitterbrush. Thanks to our guides, Des and Jason, we embarked on the famous Rock Garden on Lower Bitterbrush. I honestly had no idea what to expect going into this trail and had to closely monitor Des' lines while trying not to go over the bars. Literally there were multiple routes to take through this maze of granite and I found taking the high line a successful strategy to staying on track.
The Rock Garden wasn't incredibly steep, but the line options set this trail apart. When dry, the Front Range Granite was incredibly grippy with wall rides and small drops if you could find them in time. Our locals claimed this was an epic feat for a climb, something worthy of pro riders like Jeff Lenosky, but we cut our egos and descended this beast. I would describe this as mid to upper mid tech should be attempted by riders with solid black diamond skills. To climb, advanced riders with strong fitness would benefit greatly!
