The Temple of Venus and Roma is thought to have been the largest temple in Ancient Rome. Located on the Velian Hill, between the eastern edge of the Forum Romanum and the Colosseum, it was dedicated to the goddesses Venus Felix (Venus the Bringer of Good Fortune) and Roma Aeterna (Eternal Rome).

Temple of Venus and Rome - Ancient Rome Live
The colossal Temple of Venus and Rome was one of Rome's largest imperial temples. It essentially enveloped the Velia Hill, next to the Palatine and overlooking the Colosseum valley. Hadrian constructed this temple dedicated to two deities, necessitating its two cellae, back to back, for each cult statue. Maxentius almost entirely rebuilt the temple, on an even more magnificent scale. The remains of one cella and the stairs facing the forum were incorporate into the Church of X and monastery, today the site of superintendency office, and old museum, today being revamped as the new Roman Forum museum.

4. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Claudia Del Monti, architect and project manager of the restorations:
This is an intriguing monument, not just because it was the biggest temple but because it is a double one with two cells touching each other and with a peculiar orientation. The cell of Venus towards the East and the cell of Rome towards the West, where the forum is.

8. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Francesco Maria Giro, under-secretary of the Ministry of Culture:
We have realised projects of great cultural importance, opening archaeological areas that were closed and inaccessible for more than 30 or 40 years. For example, people could not get in here for around 30 years. We are opening what used to be closed, inaccessible, obscure. We have to do it, because this is what the tourists coming from all over the world want.

STORYLINE
The Italian government on Thursday re-opened the Temple of Venus and Rome in the Roman Forum after 26 years of restoration works.
The temple was first opened in 141 A.D. by the Roman Emperor Antonino Pio.
All that remains today are a long series of columns and an arching vaults.
The opening comes in the same week that the Ministry of Culture has been harshly criticised following the collapse of the House of Gladiators section of the ruins in Pompeii following heavy rain.
Some government opposition members and Italian associations have called for the resignation of the Minister of Culture, Sandro Bondi, who denied any responsibility.
The temple of Venus is one of the biggest and most famous of the Roman forum.
It is placed right in front of the Coliseum and it is visible from the busy Fori Imperiali road, the boulevard that was created by the 40th Prime Minister of Italy and leader of the Fascist party, Benito Mussolini, to run through the Forum and celebrate the splendour of the Roman empire.
We are opening what used to be closed, inaccessible, obscure. We have to do it, because this is what the tourists coming from all over the world want, said Francesco Maria Giro, under-secretary of the Ministry of Culture.

Unfortunately these facts can happen as far as archaeological goods are concerned. Archaeology is very fragile and must be constantly monitored. We are doing it.

17. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Claudia Del Monti, architect and project manager of the restorations of the temple of Venus in Rome:
Stones are collapsing because in Italy we don't have enough awareness of our cultural heritage. We should look after it, with more care and not only with modern eyes. Our monuments should be blocked before falling apart. Here in the Colosseum there is an amazing restoration work. It shows a collapsing arch, but it is like frozen in its collapse.

STORYLINE
The collapse in Pompeii last week of a frescoed house where gladiators prepared for combat was the latest loss among Italy's ancient wonders.
The structure had survived the explosion of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. but apparently could not withstand modern neglect.
Last spring, a huge segment of Nero's fabled Golden Palace beneath Rome gave way, raining down pieces of vaulted ceiling in one of the galleries under a garden popular with strollers.
Three years ago, a 20-foot (6-meter) section of ancient wall crumpled into a pile of bricks after days of heavy rain.
The wall had been named after the third century emperor Aurelius, who built it to defend Rome against the first onslaught of barbarians.
A couple of months ago, three chunks of mortar broke off the Colosseum, hours before the symbol of the Eternal City opened its gates to tourists.
The ancient Roman arena has survived earthquakes, lightning strikes and pillaging, but these days engineers fret more about damage from pollution, the constant rattling of nearby subway rails and centuries of poor drainage.
Topping experts' list of imperiled structures is Palatine Hill, the once-palatial home of Rome's ancient emperors.
For years, archaeologists and engineers have warned that it was at risk of collapse because of poor upkeep.
Fissures are apparent in brickwork, and rainwater seeps through stone, forcing much of the hall to be closed to visitors.
A building called the House of the Chaste Lovers collapsed in January in Pompeii, which is visited by 3 million (m) tourists each year.
We are tired of commenting on the continuous collapses and damage to the archaeological heritage of our country, said Giorgia Leoni, president of the Italian Confederation of Archaeologists in a statement after the gladiators' place fell apart on Saturday.

Temple of Saturn - Ancient Rome Live
The Temple of Saturn was one of the great Republican temples of Rome. It still stands overlooking the Forum from the Capitoline hill slopes. It was dedicated in the early 5C BC, rebuilt in the Augustan age by L. Muncius Plancus, and rebuilt again at the end of the 4C AD, the last temple rebuilt in Rome. It stands today as a reminder of ancient Rome's lasting legacy.

15. Rome and a Villa: Hadrian's Pantheon and Tivoli Retreat
Roman Architecture (HSAR 252)
Professor Kleiner features the architecture built in and around Rome during the reign of Hadrian. The lecture begins with the Temple of Venus and Roma, a Greek-style temple constructed near the Colosseum in Rome, which may have been designed by Hadrian himself. Professor Kleiner then turns to the Pantheon, a temple dedicated to all the gods that combines the marble porch and pediment of a traditional Greco-Roman temple with a vast concrete cylindrical drum, hemispherical dome, and central oculus. The porch serves to conceal the circular shape from view, but upon entering the structure the visitor is impressed by the massive interior space and theatrical play of light. The Pantheon represents the culmination of the Roman quest towards an architecture that shapes and dramatizes interior space. Professor Kleiner next discusses the Villa of Hadrian at Tivoli, a sprawling complex in which the emperor re-created buildings and works of art he observed during his empire-wide travels. The lecture concludes with a brief overview of the Mausoleum of Hadrian (the Castel Sant'Angelo), a round tomb that refers back to the Mausoleum of Augustus and served as the last resting place for Hadrian and the succeeding Antonine dynasty.

The Script: The Colosseum, was a large Stadium based in the center of Rome, next to the Temple of venus and Roma and the statue of Nero.
“il Colosseo”, as Medieval Italy Called it, had brought wonders to the eyes of whom he sees it. Its shape may seem but of rows of seats, Beautiful columns from the exterior, built from stones, but the story isn’t that simple.
The empire had its most important social events and entertainment, celebrations, in this spot. All of the social levels of the Empire came to see the events of Gladiators fight, displays of gymnastics, Olympics and thus, a place where speeches might be presented to the people.
The festivals of games held at the Roman Colosseum could last for 100 continuous days. People come to be entertained. They had come to see fabulous spectacles. They had come to revel in the might and the power of Rome. Romans loved to be reminded of the great victories they had achieved in battle
The Construction began under the emperor Vespasian in AD 72, and was completed in AD 80 under his successor and heir Titus.
Special boxes were provided at the north and south ends respectively for the Emperor and the Vestal Virgins, providing the best views of the arena. Flanking them at the same level was a broad platform or podium for the senatorial class, who were allowed to bring their own chairs. The names of some 5th century senators can still be seen carved into the stonework, presumably reserving areas for their use.
The tier above the senators, known as the maenianum primum, was occupied by the non-senatorial noble class or knights (equites). The next level up, the maenianum secundum, was originally reserved for ordinary Roman citizens (plebeians) and was divided into two sections. The lower part (the immum) was for wealthy citizens, while the upper part (the summum) was for poor citizens. Specific sectors were provided for other social groups: for instance, boys with their tutors, soldiers on leave, foreign dignitaries, scribes, heralds, priests and so on.
The Beautiful Colossus, was a Wonderful piece of Art, and a source of Pride and Prestige, for the Roman Empire.
