World Record Sized Seashells! - Exploring the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum - Sanibel, FL
The kids set out with buckets in hand to explore Sanibel Island! Known for its dolphin shape, this island has an extremely large assortment of seashells wash up on shore each day. We begin by learning from the best - the staff at the Bailey- Matthews National Shell Museum. The large display of shells, including record sized sea shells and interactive displays help us learn about all the different types of seashells. In the Children's area, we touch and feel gastropods and mollusks, two types of shells that are commonly found in this area. The Shell Museum also has two wonderful videos and a great shell craft area set up for families. We wrap up our day by hitting the beach and collecting our own seashell treasures.

Fort Meyers Florida is incredible, I had the chance to discover Sanibel Island, Captiva Island, Cabbage Island, Caya Costa Island along with fantastic restaurants like the Island Cow and Bubble Room. Captiva cruises took me to remote islands and the restaurant where Jimmy Buffet was inspired to write Cheeseburger in Paradise. And I learned everything and more I wanted to know about shells at Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum! There is also a new small museum called the Mound House which offers a wealth of information about the 'mound people' and has kayak tours from their incredible property. I can't wait to take my family back to this part of Florida, to top it off it has the best shelling in the world!

The Yaeshima shell mound, or midden, was used anywhere from 3500 to 2500 years ago. Stone tools, shells and animal ones have been excavated from this site.

Estuaries — where fresh and salt water mix — are important habitats for a variety of sea life.
