A corner of Rome that is forever England
(16 Feb 2018) LEADIN:
Italy may be famed for its coffee, but at the foot of one of Rome's most famous sights is a legendary tea shop.
Celebrating its 125th anniversary, Babingtons Tea Rooms is a slice of England where tea and scones take pride of place.
STORYLINE
Babington Tea Rooms, at the base of Rome's Spanish Steps, is more London than Rome.
Stepping inside feels like entering another world - clients sip exotic teas from mint coloured cups served in silver tea pots while nibbling on scones.
Along one wall is a table with cupcakes with a twist of creamy frosting. Jam filled pies and chocolate chip biscuits line up next to a glass tray with mignon cakes with pink sugar roses on top.
Chandeliers dripping crystals reflect in the many mirrors hanging on the walls between shelves lined with multi-colored tea tins from India, Sri Lanka, China, and Japan.
It is a magical place, says Arianna Lobi, who has been working there for the past eight years.
The Tea Rooms were opened in 1893 by two young women, Anna Maria Babington and Isabell Cargill for the English population in Rome to take their tea and read their newspapers.
Rory Bruce is the co- owner of Babingtons Tea Room and the great grandson of co-founder Isabel Cargill.
It was my great grandmother with her partner, my great grandmother being Isabell Cargill and her partner being Anna Maria Babingtons who had come to Rome on a Grand Tour trip and adored Rome, adored what was going on here. It was very busy, a lot of English, a big English community was living here at the time – poets and authors and writers and so on and so forth. So they went back to England but they had left a piece of their hearts here in Rome and one of these things that they had noticed when they were here was that there was nowhere you could have tea. You could only buy it very occasionally and very rarely in pharmacies and it was used for medicinal purposes. So they thought, well we really would like to go back, how can we do it, how can we do it. In the end, at a certain point they said, right this is it, we want to do it, and they just left England together with my great grandmother's sister who was with them as well, and they arrived in Rome and initially set up the tea rooms with 100 pounds…they had a hundred pounds between the two of them.
At the time, tea was only available in a chemist's shop to be used for medicinal purposes. In addition to tea, these two enterprising young women provided something unavailable in Rome at the time - a proper ladies' bathroom.
Tea and toilets were a popular combination soon attracting both the English population living in Rome and upper crust Italians.
Babingtons soon became a favourite spot for Brits living in the Eternal City or for those passing through on the Grand Tour.
The Grand Tour, a leisurely voyage to nations in Europe to study everything from Renaissance art to ancient Greek and Roman culture, was once a tradition among the upper-class English. Venice, Florence and Rome were favoured spots.
Portraits of Isabell Cargill and Anna Maria Babington hang on the walls of the tea rooms where they seem to keep an eye on their business, now run by the great grandchildren of Isabell Cargill.
Sitting in the corner of the tea room, sipping a cup of tea, Rory Bruce recalls some of the exciting moments of Babingtons' history.
The Tea Rooms managed to survive World War I, eeked through the Depression, and became popular among both fascists and anti-fascists in the 1930s.
During the Mussolini years, the fascists leaders would take their tea in the front rooms, while the anti-fascist partisans gathered to plot in the backroom and escaped through the kitchen if necessary.
The tea is not cheap, running from 12 -14 euros for a pot.

Massive thanks to Calum Franklin and his team for welcoming us into The Pie Room and for treating us to their sensational pork pie and Scotch egg and a huge thanks to Oisín Rogers and his team from The Guinea Grill for the tour of their cellar and for the thirst quenching pints!
We're in London, England! In this 3 part series we're hunting down the best British food in England's capital. We take you on a huge British food tour of traditional British food from Sunday Roast and fish and chips to pies and Scotch eggs.
This is our second video from London and it's all about the best British food. British food often gets a bad rap for being bland and unexciting. Nothing could be further from the truth! You just have to know where to find good British food in London. Luckily, we've done the hard yards for you.
We start at The Pie Room created by Executive Head Chef Calum Franklin. Calum has created a space devoted to perfecting the art of one of Britain's most historical and beloved foods- the pie. We sample the hot pork pie and his award winning Scotch egg- both are incredible. Next up it's a feast of classic fish and chips from a family run, old school fish and chippery in Westminster. We eat battered cod and chips doused in malt vinegar in the park. Then it's off to The Guinea Grill- one of England's most historic pubs for a couple of pints before we settle in for a Sunday roast of epic proportions at Blacklock- known for roasting their meat over open flames.
We hope you enjoyed this British food video, thanks for watching! #britishfood #londonfood #englishfood

Killing time during the Trojan War with Ajax and Achilles: Curator's Corner S5 Ep 10
When you think about the Trojan War (which we know you do a lot), you probably think about the great fight between Achilles and Hektor or maybe the MASSIVE wooden horse the Greeks used to finally defeat the Trojans after 10 long years of war. However, we're guessing what you DON'T think of is the Greek heroes Ajax and Achilles hunched over a tiny game of dice. Curator Victoria Donnellan is going to change that for you with a black figure amphora.

STREET FOOD in ITALY | SICILIAN street food in PALERMO, SICILY | Sicilian MARKET food +
STREET FOOD in ITALY | SICILIAN street food in PALERMO, SICILY
We're in Palermo, Sicily! In this 3 part series we're exploring Palermo to hunt down the best Sicilian food. Palermo has a thriving street food culture that's big on offal and punchy, bold flavours.
This is our first video from Palermo and it's all about Sicilian street food and traditional Sicilian food! We start the day at one of Palermo's most popular local markets- Ballaro Market. Ballaro Market is packed with fresh produce, meat and seafood and has an abundance of ready to eat street foods to sample. Some of Palermo's most beloved street foods are here so we start with frittula. Frittula is a snack you won't find elsewhere in Italy it's made up of leftover scraps from a calf carcass that are boiled and then fried in lard. Next up it's time for some seafood- pulpo or octopus simply boiled and served with a squeeze of lemon and sardine rolled and stuffed with breadcrumbs, pine nuts, parsley and raisins. Before leaving the market we eat some snails- babalucci which are cooked in garlic and parsley. They're mouthwatering! We head for more food at one of our favourite trattoria's which is close to the market for some seafood pastas- swordfish and eggplant spaghetti for Thomas and cuttlefish and cuttlefish ink spaghetti for Sheena. Finally, we head to a famous local bakery to sample some Sicilian sweets for which the island is well known. #streetfooditaly #sicilianfood #sicilyfood
We hope you enjoyed this Sicilian street food video, thanks for watching!

Marta's Road Book #5 : ROME the fountains - my American friend
my American friend blog and podcast (English language) myamericanfriendblog.com
ROME
This is what Italy is famous for : history and art - and food, of course.
Visiting Rome is a never ending experience, not even 10 days in a row would be enough to see half of it.
Rome has been the capital of the Roman Empire first and of the Christian world later on and it wouldn't have been possible without one precious element: water.
Some water-related words you need to know when visiting the Eternal City are :
- aqueducts : the waterway system providing Rome with running water
- baths : public facilities for bathing and wellness
- monumental fountains: beautiful fountains decorating Rome and still glorifying who built them.
The Trevi fountain is maybe the most famous of all, it's been the setting of films like La dolce vita and Roman holidays.
There's a popular superstition about it: by throwing a coin in the Trevi fountain you are ensured to return to Rome. Every single day about 3,000 Euro are thrown in that fountain, then collected for charity.
There are so many fountains in Rome that you can decide to follow an itinerary across the center to see them all, possibly by night.
Don't miss the famous fountains in Piazza Navona, Piazza di Spagna and in front of the Pantheon. But this is just the beginning: be ready to discover a lot of minor fountains that embellish every hidden corner of Rome.
This is Nasone, it means Big Nose.
There are so many of these little drinking fountains around you, they are not monumental, but they are very useful : the water is always fresh, good and for free!
