Best Bourbon Bar Ever? Is In Ohio?
An educational chat with the impressively-bearded, incredibly-named, Joe Head, co-owner and bartender at The Century Bar in downtown Dayton, Ohio.
For those of you who don't know, this is the city where Lauren and I grew up and the bar at which we developed our first embryonic love affair with spirits. With over 300 whisk(e)ys on the back bar at any given time (largely dedicated to bourbon) and a staff made up entirely of well-versed aficionados, this place is a curious drinker’s paradise. Since leaving Ohio, Lauren and I have traveled extensively, separately and together, living in other cities and even other countries. Along the way we've learned a fair bit more about spirits than we could have ever dreamed back then. We’ve also picked up a few of our own industry credentials. But we will never, ever (I can assure you) outgrow The Century Bar. Every time we’re in town, it is a must-visit and it always reminds us just how little we actually know about whisk(e)y.
Editor’s note: this is the very first interview we booked, just after we decided to hit the road full-time documenting our exploration of beer, wine, and spirits. It was shot, mostly handheld, on an entry-level DSLR that was not so great with video, in lighting conditions that were about as bad as it gets, and with a jerry-rigged microphone that we had purchased the day before. We also knew dick about interviewing (hence the sweating and perpetual “mmm-hmm”). Needless to say, the resultant footage was a little embarrassing which is why we sat on it for nearly TWO YEARS!
Fast-forward to now: we’ve upgraded our equipment considerably (and learned to use it!) and even know a little about post-production. We sprinkled a little fairy dust from that latter skill and spliced in a little footage from our recent visit to Buffalo Trace to make something we hope is presentable. Let us know what you think!
A big, big thanks to Joe Head and all the other incredibly talented men and women at The Century Bar. You were generous with your time (and your whiskey) before we even had a business card. Our very real apologies for the wait. We were initially embarrassed by our unpolished footage. At this point, we’re just embarrassed to have been disrespectful of your time. Again, please forgive us. We hope to have a drink or three there soon.
-Branden + Lauren
1974 SUPER OUTBREAK - WikiVidi Documentary
The 1974 Super Outbreak was the second-largest tornado outbreak on record for a single 24-hour period, just behind the 2011 Super Outbreak. It was also the most violent tornado outbreak ever recorded, with 30 F4/F5 tornadoes confirmed. From April 3 to April 4, 1974, there were 148 tornadoes confirmed in 13 U.S. states and the Canadian province of Ontario. In the United States, tornadoes struck Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, and New York. The entire outbreak caused more than $600 million in damage in the United States alone, and extensively damaged approximately 900 mi2 along a total combined path length of 2,600 mi. At one point, as many as 15 separate tornadoes were ongoing at the same time. The 1974 Super Outbreak remains one of the most outstanding severe convective weather episodes of record in the continental United States. The outbreak far surpassed previous and succeeding events in...

Wine Prices to Increase in Miami Valley After Napa Earthquake
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP-- Wine prices in the Miami Valley are expected to increase as a result of damages from the 6.0 earthquake in California's Napa county.
Damage dollar amounts are still being totaled but local experts say the quake will affect prices, and possibly keep some bottles from returning to shelves.
Sorry, we can't get that 100 cases of wine because it's not available, warned George Punter, Wine and Beer Department Manager at Dorothy Lane Market in Washington Township.
Punter says about half of the wine that the chain stocks comes from the United States west coast.
I foresee [cabernet] to be affected the most and then the higher end Chardonnay's from the south end of Napa county like Carneros, said Punter, Depending on how much they lost of their vintage that may escalate the prices quite a bit.
The drought out there will affect it again so I think we will see price increases quite dramatically, said Chris Holloway, owner of Rumbleseat Wines.
It will carry that price increase maybe a little bit longer than we would expect than just from the earthquake wine, he added.
Dorothy Lane Market said they could not make exact estimates on how much wine prices will increase but estimated that a bottle that usually sells on sale for twelve dollars, may cost full price-- approximately twenty dollars-- at the checkout as soon as September.
As of September/October you'll really see the effects of who got hurt the most, Punter said.
Customers inside the Market said the juice is worth squeezing their wallets a bit extra.
A couple extra dollars I won't go so far as to say twenty, because the wines I buy are relatively pricy to begin with, said customer Janet Golart.
When I want a glass of wine I want a good glass of wine and I'd be willing to pay for it, said Kay Glover.

Trailer park millionaires
Some of the richest people in the US, including billionaires Warren Buffett and Sam Zell, have made millions from trailer parks at the expense of the country's poorest people. Seeing their success, ordinary people from across the country are now trying to follow in their footsteps and become trailer park millionaires. The Guardian went to Orlando to learn the tricks of the trade from Frank Rolfe, the self-appointed dean of Mobile Home University, as he led would-be investors around a trailer park for sex offenders.

The Kingdom Day Parade represents the Congress Of Racial Equality of California (CORE-CA) is a successor to the Chicago based Civil Rights CORE organization founded in 1942 by the late James Farmer, and a group of Quaker pacifists to launch an aggressive assault on nationwide racial injustice during World War II. CORE immediately became one of the big three organizations in the Civil Rights movement that changed America in the 20th Century. Our original, predecessor Agency was the most aggressive of all three and the first to use non-violence. It was CORE that invented the FREEDOM RIDES and the SIT-INS in the 40’s and 50’s. It was CORE that first brought non-violence into the Montgomery Bus Boycott that would be led by Dr. King.
It was the CORE vanguard of Freedom Fighters such as Schwerner, Goodman and Chaney and Viola Liuzzo, whose work in the Southern Voter Registration mid-century wars who braved arrests, beatings and even sacrificed their lives in the 1950’s and 60’s. In the North we focused on securing Equal Employment Opportunity and access to Fair Housing and Equal Education at all levels. While we helped achieve creation of Federal and State Agencies to pursue Fair Housing, Equal Employment and Education CORE-CA continues to monitor their effectiveness while maintaining the lead ourselves in the struggle to combat Abuse of Police Authority and Education as a Civil Right for our youth.
CORE-CA today also leads in the critical struggle to eliminate rising tensions between Black and Hispanic youths. CORE-CA is engaged in research on the definition of Race and elimination of tensions. CORE-CA today places a heavy emphasis on building self-esteem and the nurturing of test taking ability among African American Cohort students who have become increasingly excluded from admission to College and University and 21st century jobs and business development opportunities. In these regards CORE-CA collaborates with all elements of public and private sector to achieve these goals.

Ep. 510 Mississippi Melodies - Tennessee Valley Uncharted
Aerial heads down to Clarksdale, Mississippi, hoping to shine a spotlight on the innovators and artists that have impacted the music of America. Her first stop is the Devil’s Crossroads, where according to legend, musician Robert Johnson sold his soul in exchange for mastery of the guitar. A local sits with her at Hopson Commissary to give her the lowdown on the infamous tale, as well as other forgotten stories that surround the area. Then, it’s all music and dancing at the Deep Blues Festival. Aerial visits both the Ground Zero Blues Club and the New Roxy to talk to the owners of these remarkable venues about what blues music means to the city. Afterward, she stops into Deak’s Mississippi Saxophones and Blues Emporium, where she meets owner Deak Harp. Not only does she learn how he got into playing the harmonica and how he keeps the craft alive by offering repairs to the instrument, but she also gets to hear a performance! Next, Aerial relives her student days by visiting Quitman County Middle School, where she helps the manager of the TVA Science Kids World Water Monitoring Program collect samples for a lab that she then gets to participate in during class. There, she discovers why it’s important for kids to learn about their local water sources, and to get handson experience with scientific experiments. Before she concludes her trip to Mississippi, Aerial meets up with the owner of the Shack Up Inn, a collection of sharecropper shacks that are as historically prominent as they are comfortable.
