The Keystone state -- key to America's independence. Check out the history and culture of Pennsylvania, where many German-speaking immigrants settled, with Christopher Hoh. #50states #PA
Transcript:
Hello, my name is Christopher Hoh. I work in the U.S. Embassy in Vienna, and I was born and brought up in the the Keystone State.
Pennsylvania was one of the original 13 colonies. It was called the Keystone State in the 18th century because of its central location and role in U.S. history. The first capital of the United States was in Philadelphia.
Before it was colonized, the area was home to Native American tribes, including the Lenape and the Susquehannok.
The name Pennsylvania means, Penn's Woods. In 1681, England's King Charles II gave the land to William Penn as payment for a debt of 16,000 pounds. This was one of the largest land grants to an individual in history.
William Penn was a member of the Religious Society of Friends, also known as Quakers, who were persecuted in England. So Penn established the colony for any people persecuted for their faith.
Many religious exiles from Europe settled in Pennsylvania, including the Amish, an Anabaptist sect. Today, the Amish live much as they did in the 17th century, without modern conveniences such as electricity and cars.
In the 18th and 19th centuries Germans migrated to Pennsylvania in large numbers. English‐speakers mispronounced the German word, Deutsch, as Dutch, and these immigrants became known as the Pennsylvania Dutch.
In many Pennsylvania communities, German was spoken as the language of everyday life into the early 1900's. You can still hear German dialects in the farmers' markets of Lancaster and Reading, my home town.
The language is similar to Germany's Palatinate dialect. For example, the man's dog -- der Hund des Mannes -- is this in PA Dutch -- em Mann sei Hund.
Today, 12.7 million people live in Pennsylvania, the sixth most populous state in the U.S. It covers over 46,000 square miles (more than 119,000 km2 ).
Pennsylvania has several large cities. Philadelphia was known in the 1700's as the Athens of America because of its rich cultural life.
Part of that is attributed to Pennsylvania's most famous citizen, Benjamin Franklin -- author, inventor, philosopher, businessman, diplomat and revolutionary leader.
Philadelphia is also home to the Liberty Bell, the icon of American freedom. It remains on view, cracked, on Independence Mall, where the Continental Congress met and in 1776 declared independence from Britain.
Here are some other firsts from Pennsylvania:
The first medical school, hospital, library and insurance company were established in there.
The first commercially drilled oil well near Titusville produced the first U.S. oil boom in 1859.
The first U.S. Envoy to Austria in 1838 was Henry A.P. Muhlenberg, from Lancaster.
And the Philadelphia Zoo is the oldest zoo in America.
My hometown, Reading, is located in southeastern Pennsylvania. Formerly a textile and manufacturing center, Reading became known as The Factory Outlet Capital of the World.
The surrounding area has been called the Snack Food Capital of the World, leading all other states in the production of pretzels, chips and candy.
The state has some other interesting food facts.
The Yuengling Brewery, in Pottsville, is the oldest operating brewery in America, established in 1829.
A little further west is Hershey, the birthplace of Hershey chocolate bars. The town smells of chocolate and the street lights are shaped like Hershey kisses.
And don't forget Philly cheese steaks.
Pennsylvania gave birth to one US President -- James Buchanan in the 1800s.
Vice President Joe Biden was born in Scranton.
Many actors also come from Pennsylvania including Kevin Bacon, Bill Cosby, Tina Fey and Sharon Stone, to name a few.
Pennsylvania has always had a creative music scene. Each religious sect that settled in Pennsylvania brought with it a unique style of music. The Moravians, in Bethlehem, introduced organs and trombones into their worship. The Mennonites and Lutherans sang heartily, from German hymnbooks. And the Ephrata Cloister was known for beautiful harmony.
Popular singers today include Taylor Swift, from Wyomissing, and Christina Aguilera and George Benson, from Pittsburgh.
Philadelphia is also the birthplace of the famous TV program, American Bandstand, which introduced singers and bands to teenagers for more than 20 years.
I travel the world but I still have a strong connection to my home state: I'm a career diplomat -- like Benjamin Franklin, our country's first envoy. I'm also a composer who benefited from my home state's musical milieu.
I'm proud to come from Pennsylvania, the land of the Liberty Bell, which helped inspire the cause of freedom for all humanity.

Warlock Gang Member Reveals his Life in a Motorcycle Gang with Connected by Larry Formato

Even in the criminal underground of outlaw motorcycle gangs, the Warlocks, an OMG active in Pennsylvania and Florida, have a bad reputation. Other clubs like the Pagan's see themselves as too upstanding and respectable to associate with the Warlocks, who are seen as low lives by many other gangs [source: McGarvey]. So what kind of activities do bikers get involved in when even their fellow bikers don't respect them? Wearing the image of a harpy, a winged monster from Greek mythology, as their emblem, the Warlocks have been involved in dealing drugs and violent crime since they were founded in the late '60s.. Retaliating for an attack by The Breed Motorcycle Club on Warlocks members who were drinking at a Pennsylvania bar, fellow Warlocks kidnapped Breed chapter leader Craig Coyote Gudkneckt, tied him up and beat him repeatedly with the butt of a handgun. The offending Warlocks went to jail once Coyote reported the beating to the police [source: McGarvey]. In 1995, a Warlock known as Mudman was convicted of murdering a cop after being pulled over, worried that he would be taken back to prison for violating parole [source: Graham]. Mudman died in a prison brawl a few years later he Warlocks Motorcycle Club was founded in 1967 in Florida, United One Percenter motorcycle club with chapters in various parts of the United States, Canada, UK and Germany. Established by Tom Grub Freeland,[1] an ex-US Navy veteran in Orlando, Florida, in 1967. The Mother Chapter is still located there.
They have eleven chapters in Florida, seven in South Carolina, five in Virginia, four in West Virginia, two in Georgia, two in Ohio, one in Minnesota, one in New York, three in Canada, three in England, and two in Germany. There are also several Nomads who live and work in states that don't have Warlocks chapters.

McMafia: A Journey Through the Global Criminal Underworld
The Warlocks Motorcycle Club outlaw motorcycle club that was formed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1967. It was the first official 1% outlaw motorcycle club founded in Pennsylvania. The club is most prominent in the Philadelphia and Delaware County area, but they have territory all throughout the Delaware Valley (i.e. the Philly metro area), including South Jersey and Wilmington. There are now chapters all throughout Pennsylvania, South Jersey, and Delaware. The club's insignia is a Harpy, which in Greek and Roman mythology, was a female monster in the form of a bird with a human face. Their colors are Red and White. The club rapidly expanded at the end of the Vietnam War when thousands of soldiers returned home to the United States, many to Pennsylvania.
In December 1988, individuals associated with the Warlocks kidnapped the then Breed chapter president Craig Coyote Gudkneckt in retaliation for several Warlock members being jumped by Breed members in a Bensalem bar. Gudkneckt was taken to the home of a Warlock where he was tied up, beaten and pistol-whipped. Gudkneckt escaped. Police Sgt. Ippolito Lee Gonzalez of Franklin Township, Gloucester County, New Jersey pulled over Warlocks members Robert Mudman Simon and Charles Staples on a traffic stop moments after the two had committed a commercial burglary. Simon shot Gonzalez twice, in the head and neck, and Gonzalez died instantly. Simon later said he shot Sergeant Gonzalez because he did not want to return to prison. Simon was quickly apprehended, pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to death. At the time of Gonzalez's murder Simon was barely three months out of jail and on parole after a 1981 conviction for killing a woman in Carbon County, Pennsylvania. In 1999, Simon was stomped to death by Ambrose Harris, another death-row inmate, in New Jersey's Trenton State Prison. Harris argued self-defense, and charges were dropped.[6]
In 2006, Tommy Zaroff, born about 1972 (age 45–46), a former President of the Bucks County chapter of the Warlocks was arrested on suspicion of possessing ten pounds of methamphetamine, and was sentenced to at least five years after pleading guilty to charges including distributing a controlled substance, profiting from illegal acts and conspiracy , was arrested under his alias Richard McElheney, after his home was raided by police. Police seized six rifles, ten handguns and various illegal drugs.
Tom Corbett alleged that the Warlocks motorcycle club is involved with a methamphetamine manufacturing operation based in Berks County Pennsylvania. The sting was dubbed Operation Underground.the Warlocks motorcycle club, which has allegedly been linked to organized crime and drug trafficking. The Warlocks have been the subject of other investigations

Major Development Project in Center City Philadelphia
Philadelphia, February 18, 2014 -- Mayor Michael A. Nutter formally announced the selection of the Peebles Corporation and P&A Associates as the developers of a new $85 million 199 room Kimpton Hotel to be built at 1801 Vine Street. Located along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway just one block from the new Barnes Foundation, the availability of this key site provides a rare opportunity to revitalize an important historic building and to create a unique, new destination along Philadelphia's most prominent thoroughfare.
We are delighted to announce this major economic development project that will create more than 600 construction and permanent jobs in Philadelphia, said Mayor Nutter, who made the announcement during a press conference at City Hall. The addition of a new Kimpton Hotel along the Ben Franklin Parkway will be a great addition to that historic boulevard. This investment demonstrates the continued momentum of our city's hospitality and tourism industry.
The 247,000-square-foot building at 1801 Vine Street was completed in 1941 and has served as home to the Family Division of the Court of Common Pleas of the First Judicial District of Pennsylvania since that time. The building is currently listed on the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places, and the planned redevelopment will incorporate its important historic elements, including the preservation and maintenance of its 37 historic interior murals. The Family Division will relocate to a new facility which is under construction at 15th and Arch Streets later this year.
The new hotel will feature 199 guest rooms, 16,000 square feet of spa and fitness space, 14,000 square feet of meeting and event space, and 5,800 square feet for a restaurant and bar. The redevelopment of this property will significantly enhance the Parkway Museums District, generate new tax revenues, and continue the momentum of new commercial and institutional development activity along Vine Street. The hotel will serve Philadelphia's growing leisure, business, and convention markets, in particular supporting the major arts and culture attractions along the Parkway such as the Barnes Foundation, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Academy of Natural Sciences, the Franklin Institute, and the Free Library of Philadelphia. It will also be the first minority-owned hotel development of its size in Center City Philadelphia.
The Peebles Corporation is the country's largest African-American real estate development company with a multi-billion dollar development portfolio of luxury hotels, high-rise residential and Class A commercial properties and developments throughout the United States. The company is a diversified real estate developer with a wide range of uses located in major international cities such as New York, Miami, Las Vegas, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.
We are proud to have been selected by the City of Philadelphia for the development of this national landmark and look forward to working with our partners at P&A and the team at Kimpton in the genesis of Philadelphia's newest hotel, said R. Donahue Peebles, Chairman and CEO of The Peebles Corporation. I am enthusiastic to have the opportunity to work with Mayor Nutter and the City of Philadelphia to revolutionize this iconic property into one of the premier hotels in the country and an economic engine that provides business and career opportunities to the residents and businesses of Philadelphia. We are also committed to ensuring this development sets a new standard for the inclusion of minority business opportunities in Philadelphia. McKissack & McKissack, America's oldest minority owned construction company will lead this effort during the construction phase.
The Peebles Corporation and P&A Associates were selected from three finalist proposals in a public and competitive selection process. Their proposal was selected based on a series of criteria that included: a superior proposal from a highly experienced national and local development team; a best-in-class hotel operating partner; a sensitive approach to the historic preservation of this iconic building's interiors and exterior façade; strong inclusion of minority participation in the ownership and development of the project; and the most feasible overall operating and financing plan. The development team will acquire 1801 Vine Street for $4.5 million.
