Russia: Pacific fleet commander hails ‘significant’ relaunch of modernised submarine
Russia's Pacific Fleet Commander Sergei Avakyants hailed the relaunch of the upgraded diesel-electric submarine, dubbed Komsomolsk-on-Amur of Project 877, at a ceremony in Vladivostok on Friday.
SOT, Sergei Avakyants, Commander of Russia's Pacific Fleet (Russian): Today we are witnessing a very significant event for the Pacific Fleet: the diesel submarine becomes a part of the [fleet's] combat strength after many years of repair. The repairs were carried for modernisation purposes, but we are pleased not only because the fleet's combat strength is reinforced, it is also important for us that this vessel was renovated at the shipyard in the Far East. The Pacific Fleet needs a strong shipbuilding and ship repairing base in the Far East.

S-56 was a Stalinets-class submarine of the Soviet Navy. She was laid down by shipyard #194 in Leningrad on 24 November 1936, shipped in sections by rail to Vladivostok where it was reassembled by Dalzavod. She was launched on 25 December 1939 and commissioned on 20 October 1941 in the Pacific Fleet. During World War II, the submarine was under the command of Captain Grigori Shchedrin and was moved from the Pacific Fleet to the Northern fleet across the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans via the Panama Canal.

Submarine S-56 Museum-Vladivostok, Russia
Being the integral part of Vladivostok's glorious history, the Pacific Fleet was a reliable guard of Soviet Union's Far Eastern sea borders during the Great Patriotic War and significantly contributed to defeating the fascist invaders. The city has several monuments devoted to Russian seamen's heroism and selflessness: the Memorial Submarine S-56 installed on the Korabelnaya Naberezhnaya (literally: Ships' Quay) is one of them. Together with patrol ship 'Krasny Vympel' it constitutes the memorial complex Military Glory of the Pacific Fleet.
Upon its origin in 1936, the submarine S-56 was the first rank vessel equipped with powerful engines. Having strong torpedo and artillery arms, high speed and self-sufficiency, such submarine was a dire threat to any enemy. In 1941, submarine S-56 became a part of the Pacific Fleet, and a year later, it was sent from Vladivostok to polar region in order to increase Northern Fleet's war strength.
During the World War II the submarine passed two oceans - the Pacific and the Atlantic, nine seas - including Caribbean Sea, Sargasso Sea and North Sea, and scores of islands and straits. Over this time it made eight military campaigns, carried out twelve torpedo attacks that resulted in sinking ten rival ships and damaging four more. Over three thousand depth bombs were dropped on it, but the S-56 remained unsinkable.
In the year 1975, to honor the 30th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War, the submarine was installed on the pedestal of eternal glory on the Zolotoy Rog Bay's beach. Today the unique museum is equipped inside the submarine S-56. There you can get a clear image of how submarine's heroic crew fought with furious storms, repulsed torpedo attacks and wormed its way through tropical heat and sever cold to help the Northern Fleet. The museum is devoted not only to the vessel's history, but to development of the Pacific Fleet's submarine forces.
Each of submarine's seven sections is a separate room with its own original exposition. Museum's visitors start discovering the S-56 from the last - seventh section. It provides facts about museum's opening history (here you can see old pictures and even submarine's original tonnage board, which was found at memorial complex's foundation), and also about submarine fleet's history from its creation to 1917. The story continues in the sixth section, introducing the period of 1917 - 1923.
The fifth (diesel) section's exposition is devoted directly to the fate and deeds of the submarine S-56: truly unique artifacts are kept here. The forth section (former galley) shows models of the modern submarines. The last three sections are the most interesting ones, because they are preserved unchanged from the war times. One of guests' favourite exhibits in the third section is 9-meter long periscope. In the second section, visitors' attention is invariably attracted to the sonarman's manikin, listening to the sound of the sea. Many tourists nickname it the 'dried seaman'. The first section features varied torpedoes - in section, as well as whole.

Chinese, Russian warships and Marines heading to Syrian waters
Kim Jong-un could visit Mariinsky Theatre, public aquarium, navy fleet...
We begin with the upcoming summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and Russian President Vladimir Putin... As the world keeps close tabs on the meeting,... various media outlets are saying the two will have their first face-to-face on Wednesday or Thursday this week in Vladivostok.
Our Oh Jung-hee starts us off... with more details on the much-anticipated summit.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will be in Russia for three days starting this Wednesday... and may visit the ballet theatre and navy fleet headquarters.
That's according to Japan-based Kyodo News Agency, citing Russian government officials.
The agency reported... that the North's protocol chief Kim Chang-son toured around the world-renowned Mariinsky Theatre, a public aquarium and Russia's Pacific Fleet headquarters -- all of which, therefore, could be visited by Kim Jong-un.
Kyodo added... that Kim will make his way to Vladivostok using a special train on Wednesday and have a dinner banquet with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.
On the next day, Kim and Putin will have their one-on-one meeting as well as an expanded meeting.
On Friday, before returning to Pyeongyang, the agency says Kim could meet with North Korean students and researchers in Russia... or tour around Vladivostok.
North Korea's advance team is busy checking the security in Vladivostok.
Pyeongyang's protocol chief Kim Chang-son, the deputy commander of the guard command Kim Chol-gyu and Vice Foreign Minister Im Chon-il were spotted inspecting Russia's Far Eastern Federal University.
This is where the summit is most likely to happen.
Russia's RIA Novosti agency reports... that a sign had appeared in one of the buildings that Kim Jong-un will be there.

Walking tour in Kaliningrad, Russia
Walking tour in Kaliningrad. Kaliningrad is also called for Königsberg which is the former (German) name of the city.
Starts and ends at Hotel Kaiserhof (luxory hotel with Spa). Walking tour was around 15km. (GPS did not track the whole walk).
This was my 2nd trip to Kaliningrad (Former in 2007).
-----------
Osan ajasta satoi aika kovin. Osa kuvista on tämän vuoksi aika tummia.
