????????Chasing Lights in Tromsø, Norway
Thomas Hunger is an average German fellow but with a touch of quirkiness—his obsession with the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis). He beams with childish enthusiasm and his eyes light up with wonder every time he talks about this natural phenomenon.
But Thomas is not a visitor seeing it for the first time nor is he just a regular tour guide—Thomas “chases” Aurora like a stormchaser would chase tornados. He is in the business of selling the experience of seeing the Northern Lights even though he can never guarantee his guests that he and his team will succeed catching one. Still, his trips are filled with excitement and frenzy as he constantly consults weather apps to find it, communicates with his team on possible sightings, and crosses open borders into Sweden and Finland with his head fixed skywards, waiting for Aurora to poke out from behind the clouds at night.
When the van they travel in stops his enthusiastic guests get off and plant a thicket of tripods in the snow—cameras pointed up and ISOs boosted high to vividly capture the magical and undulating green waves in the sky.
Thomas runs one of the most successful companies in Tromsø, Norway incidentally called, Chasing Lights. Guests from as far as Malaysia, China and India make the journey just to be mesmerized by this wash of green that fills the skies of Arctic nights. It’s an experience to cross off the bucket list, his guests often say.

Seeing the Northern Lights for the First Time | Tromso, Norway
Arriving in Tromso, Norway we were lucky enough to see the Northern Lights on our first night.
It was a night I will never forget as it turned out to be one of the best displays of the Aurora Borealis of the year so far.
Admittedly, as I explain in the video, I did struggle with some of my equipment as I panicked a bit in the heat of the moment and the adrenaline got the better of me. I did however, manage to take some photos once I had composed myself and it was without a doubt one of the best experiences of my life.

Tromso Travel Vlog | Hunting of Northern Lights
Tromsø, a city in northern Norway, is a major cultural hub above the Arctic Circle. It’s famed as a viewing point for colorful Northern Lights that sometime light up the nighttime sky. The city’s historic center, on the island of Tromsø, is distinguished by its centuries-old wooden houses. The 1965 Arctic Cathedral, with its distinctive peaked roof and soaring stained-glass windows, dominates the skyline.

Aubrey was a Speech-Language Pathologist, Donnie was graphic designer, but we both had a dream to travel the world and experience cultures. After three years of being married and dreaming about if something like this great adventure would be possible, we decided to quit the rat race and take on the world. We sold everything we had, quit our jobs, and took off! We don't know how long we will get to do this, and we do have a goal of getting jobs in the UK eventually, but we are going to live it to the fullest while we can!

Hunting the Northern Lights in Norway
In winter, the light along the norwegian coast is at its most beautiful. The sun lies low on the horizon and for weeks, and north of the Arctic circle, it disappears completely. This creates a fascinating luminescence, with the Northern Lights – Aurora Borealis – at their most magical.

Northern Lights Hunt With Hurtigruten
Northern Lights hunting through the fjords of Norway with Hurtigruten.
A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness the Northern Lights attracts me and many others on a weeklong Norwegian coastal cruise with Hurtigruten. Guests have come all the way from China, Japan, the U.S. and Europe—united by a common goal.
So what does it take to see the Northern Lights, exactly?
“As long as we are north of the Arctic Circle, the only conditions we need to see the Northern Lights are clear skies and darkness,” said Bjørn Lemcke, assistant expedition leader on Hurtigruten’s Nordnorge. “We get many weird questions from guests about the Northern Lights. I always joke that I turn them on around midnight, and that I have a switch under my desk.”
Sometimes the activity is strongest late at night, when guests are fast asleep. If you value seeing the lights over your beauty sleep, Bjørn suggests turning on the “info” button inside your cabin so that you can hear announcements about sightings on deck.
“When the announcements are made, it’s crazy. Everyone will get up in the middle of the night if they haven’t seen it before,” he said.
Not all the excitement takes place in the middle of the night, though. You might choose to spend the day admiring the Art Nouveau architecture in Alesund or walking up some 400 odd steps to the top of Mount Aksla. Perhaps you’ll try dog sledding at dusk in Tromso or take a winter walk in Bodo, through Viking graves and an ancient village.
My favorite daytime excursion with Hurtigruten was a trip to the North Cape. A 1,000-foot cliff overlooks the northernmost point in Europe, and the untouched, barren landscape really makes you feel like you’ve reached the end of the earth.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Did you see the Northern Lights or what, lady?
Well, the conditions were not in our favor for the majority of the cruise, with rain, snow and overcast weather. However, on our very last night onboard, after much perseverance and hours spent on deck, I finally caught a glimpse of the Aurora Borealis. Though they were not shining as brightly as they could have been, I was able to get some decent photos on my digital camera thanks to some handy tips provided by Bjørn and the rest of Hurtigruten’s Expedition Team.
Whether you see the lights or not, a trip along the Norwegian coast with Hurtigruten is filled with eye-opening experiences, cultural programming and striking scenery— leaving you with a new appreciation for the way Norwegians see the world.

Hindsight is 20/20: Chasing the Northern Lights in Tromso, Norway
Tromso is situated in the middle of the auroral oval, the area with the highest probability of seeing the northern lights. And it is easy to combine hunting for the lights with many activities such as dog sledding, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling.
With many hotels and restaurants, I definitely suggest a Tromso visit. With or without the lights.
