The Europe and Asia Border near Yekaterinburg (Ekaterinburg) in Russia by Francis Tapon
Francis Tapon stands on the border that divides the Asian and European continents. It is the eastern most point of Europe, deep in Russia, about an 18 hour train ride EAST of Moscow. It just goes to show how far Eastern Europe really goes. This was filmed in Russia in late 2008. Francis is the author of the upcoming book, The Hidden Europe: What Eastern Europeans Can Teach Us. (Максим - Нежность)
- Ekaterinburg (also known as Yekaterinburg) is the third largest Russian city, administrative centre of the Sverdlovsk region and the capital of the Urals. Sverdlovsk oblast is one of the most developed and advanced regions in Russia. It is very rich in minerals and raw materials - the main industries are heavy machinery and metallurgy. It is situated far from areas of ethnic conflict and is politically stable.
Ekaterinburg can easily be found on a geographical map of the vast Euro-Asian Continent: it is in the middle of the Ural mountains, which separate Europe and Asia. The Europe-Asia Obelisk which is about 25 miles (40kms) west of the city, marking the border between the two continents, is an especially interesting place to visit. Thus, Ekaterinburg lies at the crossroad of 2 continents and this determines its political, economic and cultural peculiarities.
Ekaterinburg is the capital of the Ural Federal District, which covers an area of about 2 million sq. km. The territory possesses the main oil and gas fields of Russia, and the richest deposits of iron and polymetallic ores. The world largest metallurgical enterprises are located in the Urals, concentrating here due to the great industrial and intellectual potential. The Sverdlovsk region (and Ekaterinburg as its main city) exports raw materials and heavy machinery and imports foodstuff, consumer goods and machines. Business and investment climate is believed to be favorable.

Russia Close-Up: between Europe and Asia
South UralsRussia's Chelyabinsk Region, located on the border between Europe and Asia in the southern Ural Mountains, still has a long way to go to become a mainstream holiday spot. But thought it lacks a developed tourist infrastructure, the region offers plenty of maiden forests and wilderness of the real Russia.

I'm standing in front of the Europe - Asia Division Monument in the city of Ekaterinburg, Ural Mountain Region, Russia. One of my feet stands in Europe and the other one in Asia. Isn't it cool?

II. Europe-Asia
This was our second day in Yekaterinburg, and we went to a place which was really obvious: the border between Europe and Asia. It was a huge monument sitting near rural areas. It was better to ride online taxi because it would be faster and cheaper. We saw unique statues with unusual shape and messages. This city really gave us new worldview if could say :)

More information about the video content bellow:
1.Perm is a federal subject of Russia (a krai) that came into existence on December 1, 2005 as a result of the 2004 referendum on the merger of Perm Oblast and Komi-Permyak Autonomous Okrug. The population of the krai was 2,635,276 according to the (2010 Census).
2. Residents of Perm used to be called “Permyak – salty ears”. The name Permyaks firstly appeared in the 10th century in Russian sources and came from the ancient name of the land between the Mezen River and Pechora River – Perm. Several origins of the name have been proposed but the most accepted is from Veps Peräma back, outer or far-away land from Veps perä back, extreme and ma land. Since the 20th century the name has been applied only to the southern Komi (Komi-Permyaks) in Perm Krai.
3. The conventional border between Europe and Asia runs along the Ural mountains. Perm is the very last major city on the European side of the mountains. Yekaterinburg is its equivalent on the Asian side. The border between Europe and Asia is marked by a small monument that can be accessed from the road between Perm and Yekaterinburg.
4. The Permian geological period, the last period of the Palaeozoic era, was named after Perm. In 1841, a British scientist, Sir Roderick Murchison, identified strata typical for the Permian period in his extensive exploration of what is now Perm region. He then postulated the existence of the Permian period and named it after the city of Perm. This period ended with massive extinction of Permian types, when from 70% to 96% of animal species, including insects, have died – the only known such case.
5. Perm-36, a forced labour camp located 100km north-east from Perm, was particularly infamous for its history of housing political prisoners. Perm-36 operated up until the 1980s, before, in 1996 it was turned into a museum. Despite being a highly politically controversial institution, the museum can still be visited.
6. During the Second World War, as the front was approaching Moscow, many military equipment plants (and other enterprises of state importance) were moved to the east, many of them to Perm. Because of this high concentration of state secrets, Perm unofficially became a closed city: foreigners were not allowed to come here and rumour has it that the city didn’t appear on many Soviet maps. Foreign visitors were only allowed to visit in the 1990s.
7. “The Great Tea Road” – this was the name of the route used to transport tea in caravans from China to the European part of Russia. The greatest development of the Great Tea Road took place in 17th-19th centuries. It went across the territory of three current countries: Russia, Mongolia and China.

STORYLINE
Almost 800 swimmers raced from Asia to Europe on Sunday.
They thrashed across the Bosphorus, the Istanbul seaway which marks the traditional boundary between the two continents, about 700 metres (half a mile) at its narrowest point.
The race began on the Asian side of Istanbul at the harbour of the Kanlica borough, as swimmers took to the water and headed for Europe.
The 30-kilometre (19-mile) strait, bridged for the first time in 1973, is one of the world's most spectacular and hotly contested waterways.
Once a gateway to Soviet sea power, it's now an outlet for Russian and central Asian oil exports, as well as a world tourist site.
This year's annual race attracted more contestants than ever, according to the organisers.
They included amputees and other disabled swimmers and many foreign nations who travelled to Istanbul to compete in the race.
Hasan Emre Musluoglu, to who clocked in first place with 41 minutes and 20 seconds described it as a good race... a little difficult.
