History of Catalina Bison: Hollywood, Tourism and Ecology
In prehistoric times, millions of bison roamed North America, but by the late 1800s, they were nearly extinct. Through conservation efforts, they can now be found in all 50 states, including national parks, private lands and even on one of the Channel Islands off the coast of Southern California. As VOA's Elizabeth Lee reports, the story of how the bison crossed 45 kilometers of ocean to get to Catalina Island is right out of a Hollywood movie.

A Walk Around the Ghost Town of Mentryville, Los Angeles County
Mentryville was an oil drilling town in the Santa Susana Mountains in Los Angeles County, California, USA. It was started in the 1870s around the newly discovered oil reserves in that area. The first oil strike was on September 26, 1876. The town is located at the terminus of Pico Canyon Road, four miles west of the Lyons Avenue exit from I-5 in Santa Clarita.
Pico Number 4, a short distance up the canyon from Mentryville, was the first commercially successful oil strike in California, and the longest running well on record, finally being capped in 1990. The Pico Canyon oil field proved to be the richest in the state's history to that time, and Mentryville became a boomtown from 1876 to 1900. The town was named after the superintendent who was in charge of the oil field, Charles Alexander Mentry. Mentry lived in the town until his death in 1900 and built the 13-room mansion that still stands there. In 1900, the Los Angeles Times described Mentryville as an ideal community of modest homes, where families were reared and a schoolhouse, social hall, bakery, boarding houses, bunkhouses, blacksmith shop and machine shop were built. There was also a gas-lighted tennis court, croquet fields, and a main road paved with local asphalt. One thing the town lacked was a bar. Mentry had reportedly imbued the town with his puritanism as well as his name, prohibiting drinking and the use of foul language. When Mentry died, the entire town of more than 200 people, except for three individuals left behind in Mentryville, traveled to Los Angeles for his funeral, bringing with them a large floral arrangement in the shape of an oil derrick.
Mentryville was eventually abandoned, partially because the amount of oil slowed over time, and partially because of changes to the oil industry. During the 1930s, most of Mentryville's remaining residents left, many tearing down their houses board by board and nail by nail, and taking it all with them. By 1962, Mentryville had become a ghost town, with only a caretaker family living in Mentry's old 13-room house. A visitor to the camp that year reported that rusted oil equipment cluttered the canyon, toppled derricks lay rotting, and the cemetery was choked with weeds, hidden and forgotten.

Pluses:
Bed was very good, did not have breakfast.
Upgrading our room when we had a problem with original room. Very interesting to learn history of ship. Could take days to explore all of it.
Free shuttle across harbor.
I liked staying aboard such a historical Ship. This ship oozes history at every turn. I could easily spend days aboard. The staff was helpful and very informative. They know their Ship! I will come back.
Minuses:
I know the ship is very old, but I think it could some upgrade on the outside facilities.
Expensive parking ($22/day), wi-fi charge, lack of food options (only 1 operating restaurant on board)
Lukewarm water in the shower. Not sure why - perhaps a water conservation policy. Not uncomfortable, just not hot as I prefer.
Following Queen Mary's permanent docking in California, the ship was rumored to be haunted. Since the 1980s, this supposed haunting has been featured in the marketing and promotion of the ship, with various attractions and tours presenting the theme for visitors. The ship was ranked as one of the top 10 most haunted places in America by Time Magazine in 2008.
Paranormal researcher John Champion writes in Skeptical Inquirer Magazine that he understands why people persist in believing that the Queen Mary is haunted when the only evidence given is anecdotes, creepy feelings, and shadows. Tourists who sign up for the haunted tour are given access to normally off-limit areas of the ship, while tours of the history of the ship are more limited. Champion believes that the owners are doing a disservice to the real history, the people who should be honored by remembering who they really were and what they actually did. He understands why people report strange occurrences, the ship still creaks and groans, and people's imaginations can get away from them such that they start seeing and hearing all kinds of things, attributing them to the paranormal which they have been primed for. Ghost stories are fine, concludes Champion when presented as such. The confusion of science and history with fiction ... gets us further away from the ability to relish in and truly explore our own recent history.
The ship has been the site of many paranormal television shows including Unsolved Mysteries, Ghost Hunters, Ghost Adventures, Fact or Faked and Most Haunted.

Long Beach Travel Guide | California Travel Tips
Veronica Hill explores the attractions of Long Beach in this episode of California Travel Tips. Located 20 miles south of downtown Los Angeles, on the border of Orange County, Long Beach makes a great day trip or long weekend. It's LA's second largest city — home to the historic Queen Mary, dozens of hip art galleries, and one of California's best aquariums, Aquarium of the Pacific.
Most Long Beach restaurants and shops are found at Shoreline Village. You can check out Wyland's famous Planet Ocean mural at Long Beach Sports Arena, or head to The Pike for a spin on the Ferris wheel. The 3-mile Long Beach Bike Path travels along the waterfront from Shoreline Village to Belmont Shore.
Several fun Long Beach events are held throughout the year, including the popular Long Beach Grand Prix ( in April, and Comic and Horror Con, held twice yearly at Long Beach Convention Center.
One of the city's signature attractions is the RMS Queen Mary ship, which has been docked here since 1967. Sailing the Atlantic between 1936 and 1967, it was one of the most luxurious ocean liners of its time. Roughly twice the size of Titanic, the Queen Mary weighs over 81,000 tons and stretches more than 1,000 feet. Check out the Upper Deck, which offers great views of Downtown Long Beach, then enjoy a cocktail in the Observation Bar, which was once the First Class Lounge. For a fun evening on ship, enjoy dinner in Sir Winston's, followed by a ghost tour with paranormal expert Erika Frost.
The Aquarium of the Pacific is another good bet — filled with one of California's most impressive collections of Pacific Ocean sea life. More than a million gallons of sea water were barged in from Catalina Island to create this underwater sanctuary, which is divided into three major regions. The Southern California/Baja Gallery is home to playful seals, skates and rays, while the Northern Pacific Gallery showcases sub-arctic critters like horned puffins, sea otters and Japanese spider crabs. One of the most impressive galleries is the Tropical Pacific region, where a three-story tall predator tank provides a glimpse of barracudas, giant black sea bass and leopard sharks. In Shark Lagoon, you can pet bamboo, zebra and epaulette sharks in a shallow pool, then feed the birds in Lorikeet Forest.
Dozens of Long Beach cruises and whale watching trips are offered throughout the day, along with daily jaunts to Catalina Island. Around sunset, head south to Naples, where you can enjoy a romantic gondola ride through the canals with Long Beach Gondola Getaway.

Marshall Gold Discovery State Park Travel Guide | Sutter's Mill | California Travel Tips
California travel tips host Veronica Hill visits California Gold Country, Sutter's Mill and historic Coloma in this episode of California Travel Tips.
On Jan. 24, 1848, James Marshall discovered gold at Sutter's Mill in Coloma California, starting the California Gold Rush.
Today, you can learn about Gold Rush history and lore at the Marshall Gold Discovery State Park, a ghost town with several living history exhibits and restored buildings. You can even view the original James Marshall cabin, located on the hills above Church Street.
After making his money in gold, miner James Marshall turned to winemaking, winning a medal at the 1860 county fair. Today El Dorado wine country continues his tradition, crafting delicious wines throughout Placerville California.
El Dorado County accommodations are mostly mom-and-pop operations. For an authentic Gold Country hotel, check out the American River Inn, once known as the American Hotel. Located in Georgetown California, the hotel was built in 1853 as a miner's boarding house, and is a popular Victorian B&B today. This haunted California hotel is said to be graced by the spirit of Oscar, a miner who lost his lady love here many years ago.
If you still have time to spare during your Mother Lode vacation, don't miss a white water rafting vacation on the American River. American River rafting is best during the spring and summer, and there are many outfitters throughout Coloma and Lotus. We personally recommend OARS (Oars.com), a California river rafting vacation outfitter that's been in business since the 1960s.

A tour to LA's Banning Residence Museum
Los Angeles, the second-largest city in the United States, blooms because of the Port of Los Angeles. Known as the “Father of the Port of Los Angeles,” it is Phineas Banning who designed and promoted the first breakwater at the Los Angeles harbor, who built the first railroad in LA, who made the City of Los Angeles the way it is today.

Long Beach California HD
Cindy and I love Long Beach California.
First the traffic was not an issue, if anything it seemed to quiet, very clean in appearance with palm lined boulevards, lots of parking at the beautiful large sandy beaches, and great homes and apartments lining the shoreline.
We could see ourselves spending some time here checking out and filming all that Southern California has to offer.

HOLLYWOOD'S MAGICAL ISLAND - CATALINA Trailer
Through the remarkable eye of first time film director, Greg Reitman, we get a first hand glimpse of The Magic Isle. While exploring historical, social, and environmental changes, the film captures the mystical splendors, natural beauty and romance of Santa Catalina Island. Using a mix of rare 16mm, archival film and old black and white stills, inter-cut with interviews of islanders, historians and celebrities; the viewer is taken on a journey during America’s golden era. It begins with the acquisition of the Santa Catalina Island Company in 1919 led by William Wrigley, Jr. He set a course for Catalina’s future in the world of art, sports, music and entertainment that was unmatched in US history even through present day.
The film documents architectural achievements, many first of a kind buildings and innovations that transformed Catalina from a simple island into a modern day state-of-the-art playground. The film highlights many of the individuals including stars of the Big Band Era, Marilyn Monroe, and the island’s role as Hollywood’s secret playground for the stars. The island even played a role in helping to elect a President. We witness the island’s tragedy and heartache – deftly captured in the film with heartfelt interviews and a score that tugs at the emotions. Utilizing interviews with Jean-Michel Cousteau, heirs of the Wrigley family, residents and visitors of the island; we learn of William Wrigley, Jr’s dream of preserving the island’s natural beauty as well as providing a magical place for all to enjoy. The film concludes with Art Good Jazz Trax, Fender’s Catalina Island Blues Festival, and a visual kaleidoscope of modern day Catalina Island as an ecological paradise highlighting the revival of the island as a place of leisure and entertainment.

The original McDonald's used to be at this location in San Bernardino, and even though the building is not there anymore, you can still visit the museum that sits in its place. This museum has tons of pieces of McDonald's history and it is a fun place to explore. Also, this video also shows the oldest operating McDonald's which is in Downey as well.

Tour The RMS Queen Mary (Long Beach California Attractions): Look Who's Traveling
Visiting the RMS Queen Mary in Long Beach. Touring the ship with the captain (00:55), taking a look at the Diana: Legacy of a Princess exhibit (02:48), and visiting the Russian Submarine Scorpion (04:09).
RMS Queen Mary is a retired ocean liner that sailed primarily on the North Atlantic Ocean from 1936 to 1967 for the Cunard Line (known as Cunard-White Star Line when the vessel entered service). Built by John Brown & Company in Clydebank, Scotland, Queen Mary along with her running mate, RMS Queen Elizabeth, were built as part of Cunard's planned two-ship weekly express service between Southampton, Cherbourg, and New York City. The two ships were a British response to the superliners built by German and French companies in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Queen Mary was the flagship of the Cunard Line from May 1936 until October 1946 when she was replaced in that role by Queen Elizabeth.
Queen Mary sailed on her maiden voyage on 27 May 1936 and captured the Blue Riband in August of that year; she lost the title to SS Normandie in 1937 and recaptured it in 1938, holding it until 1952 when she was beaten by the new SS United States. With the outbreak of World War II, she was converted into a troopship and ferried Allied soldiers for the duration of the war.
Following the war Queen Mary was refitted for passenger service and along with Queen Elizabeth commenced the two-ship transatlantic passenger service for which the two ships were initially built. The two ships dominated the transatlantic passenger transportation market until the dawn of the jet age in the late 1950s. By the mid-1960s, Queen Mary was ageing and, though still among the most popular transatlantic liners, was operating at a loss.
After several years of decreased profits for Cunard Line, Queen Mary was officially retired from service in 1967. She left Southampton for the last time on 31 October 1967 and sailed to the port of Long Beach, California, United States, where she remains permanently moored. Much of the machinery, including one of the two engine rooms, three of the four propellers, and all of the boilers, were removed. The ship serves as a tourist attraction featuring restaurants, a museum, and a hotel. The ship is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has accepted the Queen Mary as part of the Historic Hotels of America.

Newport Beach Travel Guide | California Travel Tips
California travel journalist Veronica Hill shares her Newport Beach Travel Guide in this episode of California Travel Tips.
A people watcher's paradise, Newport Beach attracts every walk of life to its shores: wealthy millionaires in imported cars, dreadlocked surfers in VW hatchbacks, and salty old sea dogs at Dory Fleet Market.
The Ocean Front promenade is a flat pedestrian and bike path that spans most of the beach. You can stroll along the boardwalk, play a game of volleyball on the beach, or body surf The Wedge, a world-famous surfing spot at the end of Balboa Peninsula.
Restaurants range from Mutt Lynch's, a fun sports bar that serves up pizza, sandwiches and beer, to the historic Crab Cooker, known for its legendary cracked crab served with cheesy potatoes and fisherman's bread. Muldoon's Irish Pub, located in the Fashion Island shopping center, serves up hearty fare straight from Dublin. Lakers fans might catch a glimpse of local resident Kobe Bryant inside Javier's, a popular Mexican cantina on PCH.
Be sure to treat yourself to the city's famous Balboa Bars — a chocolate-dipped ice cream sold at Balboa Fun Zone and Balboa Island, or head over to Sprinkles and Gelato Paradiso in Fashion Island.
Lodging in Newport ranges from upscale resorts like Pelican Hill, to comfortable inns like the Bay Shores Peninsula Hotel. For a unique overnight, book a stay in the Crystal Cove Beach Cottages, which date back to the 1930s. If you want to camp, Newport Dunes — located on the bay beside posh Fashion Island — is one of the nicest RV resorts in California.
Tip: During Christmas time, don't miss the city's magical Newport Beach Boat Parade. Newport Beach Restaurant Week is held each January.
