Korean beauty trend in Vietnam

Exports of Korean cosmetics have been consistently growing over the past few years, especially in the Southeast Asian region.
Among those countries, Vietnam is viewed as one of the fastest growing markets for Korean beauty wears.
Our Lee Unshin takes a closer look.
Facial masks used on a daily basis, a night-time skin care routine with more than 5 different steps.
Along with pop music, TV dramas and the stars in them,... Korean beauty products are a big hit in the Southeast Asian nation of Vietnam.

It's not hard to find Korean cosmetics in Ho Chi Minh City. Here at Hai Ba Trung street - one of the most popular shopping districts in the city, many different Korean cosmetic giants have sold their wares for a few years now. And they're known as a go-to beauty shop for many locals.

I use Korean products such as moisturizers and night cream on a regular basis. I like how most of them are made with natural ingredients so I don't have to worry about my skin getting irritated. A lot of my friends at work also swear by Korean cosmetics.

I like Korean makeup and skin care lines, especially the facial masks, which are excellent. I noticed the products really help even out my skin tone.

In the last 5 years, sales of Korea's beauty products have been soaring in Vietnam, with the numbers growing almost 3 fold.
According to the sellers here, items for natural, healthy looking skin, along with oil control products and water-proof makeup that can stay on in the often steamy weather... are what local customers are after the most.

We've been inviting local residents to try out our items, and many visitors come back a second or third time for more. Many of them are already familiar with Korean brands and types of products, so they usually ask for specific items.

Sales of Korean make up have soared more than 30 percent last year in the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
And Vietnam, a country with a median age of just 30, and where the K-beauty wave is seemingly expanding,... remains a market with an ever-growing potential for Korean cosmetics.

Bánh mì

Bánh mì or banh mi refers to a kind of sandwich that consists of a Vietnamese single-serving baguette, also called bánh mì in Vietnamese, which is split lengthwise and filled with various savory ingredients.

A typical Vietnamese sandwich is a fusion of meats and vegetables from native Vietnamese cuisine such as chả lụa (pork sausage), coriander leaf (cilantro), cucumber, pickled carrots, cabbage, and daikon combined with condiments from French cuisine such as pâté, along with jalapeño and mayonnaise. However, a wide variety of popular fillings are used, from xíu mại to ice cream. In Vietnam, sandwiches are typically eaten for breakfast or as a snack; they are considered too dry for lunch or dinner.

Bánh xèo [ɓǎjŋ̟ sɛ̂w], literally sizzling pancake, named for the loud sizzling sound it makes when the rice batter is poured into the hot skillet is a Vietnamese savory fried pancake made of rice flour, water, and turmeric powder. It is stuffed with individual preferences, and served vegetarian or with meat. Some common stuffings include: pork, shrimp, diced green onion, mung bean, and bean sprouts.

Family trip to Củ Chi Tunnels, Saigon in 2010

The tunnel network of Cu Chi became legendary during the 1960s for facilitating VC control of a large rural area only 30km to 40km from HCMC. At its peak, the tunnel system stretched from the South Vietnamese capital to the Cambodian border; in the district of Cu Chi alone more than 250km of tunnels honeycomb the ground. The network, parts of which were several storeys deep, included countless trapdoors, constructed living areas, storage facilities, weapon factories, field hospitals, command centres and kitchens.

Cu Chi has become a place of pilgrimage for Vietnamese school children and Communist Party cadres.
