Charleston South Carolina Apologizes For Slavery
Charleston, South Carolina, where nearly half of all enslaved Africans stepped foot in the United States for the first time, has apologized for its role in slavery.
In a 7-5 vote, the Charleston City Council on Tuesday approved a resolution that denounces slavery, calls for more tolerance in the future and proposes the creation of an office for racial reconciliation.
During antebellum America, Charleston was a crucial part of the slave trade. Nearly 40 percent of enslaved people brought into the country passed through Charleston before they were sold, according to the resolution. Charleston “flourished in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries from a robust economy, made possible by the labor of enslaved people,” the resolution said.
The passage was preceded by two hours of heated debate.
Council member Perry Waring, who voted against the resolution, said he did not think that the resolution addressed the city’s current economic issues.
“We need to work on the economic side of things so our community can go forth together in harmony and financially,” Waring said.
Council member Harry Griffin echoed Waring’s calls to focus on relevant modern issues and said that his constituents did not feel the need to apologize for something they did not partake in.
“What’s going to make our ancestors more proud? This piece of paper or fixing flooding on Huger Street?” Griffin said.
Although the resolution says it supports fair wages and racial equality in all of the city’s businesses and organizations, it does not include specific measures to achieve those goals.
Dot Scott, the president of the Charleston NAACP, said that the resolution was a “long overdue gesture,” but now the city must deal with real problems that minorities face today.
“I do think it’s meaningful, but I don’t think it’s a fix-all,” Scott told HuffPost. “Everything we’re dealing with — education, employment, housing, interacting with law enforcement, even health care — there’s much to be done.”

Fishing Vessel hits large Sailing Vessel in Good Visibility 20/8/2010

At a hearing 30/05/2011 at Southampton Magistrates the Officer of the Watch of a fishing vessel pleaded guilty to one safety charge brought under Section 58 of the Merchant Shipping Act 1995. He was fined £1,700 plus costs of £6,435.
On the 20th August 2010 the Andrea had finished fishing and was returning to port in the Netherlands. The skipper and rest of the crew were below leaving Jan Baarssen alone on the bridge in sole charge of the vessel. The Andrea is a 36.5 metre beam trawler registered in the UK but is based in the Netherlands
The Alexander von Humboldt was returning to Germany after a training voyage with a crew of fifty nine (59) consisting of thirty three (33) trainees and twenty six (26) full time crew. She is a large three masted sail training vessel registered in Germany.
The visibility on the day was good (10 Km +), wind was southerly force 5-6 with weather being grey and overcast.
During the afternoon of the 20th August 2011 the Alexander von Humboldt detected the Andrea on a steady bearing on its port side. The Andrea was not fishing and was the give way vessel. The Alexander von Humboldt started sounding its whistle. The Andrea failed to give way. The Alexander von Humboldt also tried to contact the Andrea by VHF radio but had no response. The Andrea claims to have gone hard to starboard and when within 15-20 metres of the Alex von Humboldt, the Andrea was seen to go full astern. The Andrea struck the port quarter of the Alexander von Humboldt. It was a fairly low speed collision.
Apart from some scratched paintwork, the Andrea was undamaged.
The Alexander von Humboldt was lucky to suffer only some dented shell plating with associated damage to internal wooden bulkheads and deck planking together with bent or buckled handrails. It was very fortunate that no harm came to the crew of the Alexander von Humboldt and that its rigging and watertight integrity remained intact.
Mr Jan Baarssen, 51, of Urk, Netherlands pleaded guilty for conduct endangering ships or persons. He was finerd£1,700 plus costs of £6,435
In passing sentence the Magistrates stated that it was fortunate that they were no injuries especially among the sail training crew.
Mr David Fuller O.B.E., Principal Fishing Vessel Surveyor for the Eastern Region of the MCA stated:This is yet another incident occurring on the return of a fishing vessel to harbour. Fishermen are reminded of the requirement to keep a good lookout at all times. Also that that the trip is not over until the vessel is safely tied up in port.

We pray, and pray, and pray. America is praying, but not only are the prayers going un-answered, they make God angry because of our unrepentant hearts.
What do we do?
Look up.
We must look up. We must seek God’s face, and not God’s hand.
Seek Him first. Seek His plans. Seek His kingdom. That is our only hope.
Is there hope for America -a nation of great promise? -a nation with the most Christian beginnings of any nation ever established?

In February, J.P. Morgan Chase announced it was in growth mode, expanding its branch network to cover 93 percent of the U.S. population by the end of 2022.
The aggressive growth plans will allow it to reach 80 million more consumers, or about one-quarter of the U.S. population, versus its footprint in 2018, the New York-based bank says.
The expansion of physical branches comes amid a consumer shift to mobile and online banking. The average number of teller transactions per customer has plunged 41 percent since 2014, according to J.P. Morgan's presentation at its investor day meeting.
But convenient branch locations are a key consideration for people thinking about switching banks, and most of the firm's growth in deposits has been fueled by people who use branches frequently, the bank said.
The company made it clear it had flexibility in its growth plans: More than 75 percent of its branches could be shuttered within five years or kept open for more than a decade.

Florence is a city in, and the county seat of, Florence County, South Carolina, United States. It is probably best known for being the intersection of I-95 and I-20, and the eastern terminus of I-20. It is the county seat of Florence County and the primary city within the Florence metropolitan area. The area forms the core of the historical Pee Dee region of South Carolina, which includes the eight counties of northeastern South Carolina, along with sections of southeastern North Carolina. As of the 2010 census, the population of Florence was 37,056, and the estimated population in 2015 was 38,228. Florence is one of the major cities in South Carolina. In 1965, Florence was named an All-American City, presented by the National Civic League. The city was founded as a railroad hub and became the junction of three major railroad systems, including the Wilmington and Manchester, the Northeastern, and the Cheraw and Darlington. In the Bahamas, 'slow' government response leaves residents turning to strangers for help
Hurricane Dorian came ashore at Cape Hatteras in North Carolina Friday, still packing winds of 90 miles per hour and threatening a storm surge of four to seven feet. More than 330,000 homes and businesses across the Carolinas and southern Virginia lost power. But in the Bahamas, the situation is “dire and severe,” as residents try to escape devastated areas like Abaco Island. John Yang reports.
