Walking the Sheep's Head Way 2017 - Part 1
Ireland April 2017, walking the Sheep's Head Peninsula - 94k in 5 Days in the beautiful South West of Ireland on the Wild Atlantic Way. We flew to Dublin took the train to Cork, went by bus to the start in Bantry. From there it was only walking, enjoying and relaxing, everything else was perfectly arranged by Hill Walk Tours.
Sheep's Head Peninsula
Sheep's Head, also known as Muntervary (Irish: Rinn Mhuintir Bháire), is the headland at the end of the Sheep's Head peninsula - a European Destination of Excellence - situated between Bantry Bay and Dunmanus Bay in County Cork, Ireland.
The peninsula is popular with walkers, and the Sheep's Head Way is an 88 km long-distance trail which follows old tracks and roads around the peninsula from Bantry to the headland and back. The trail is very accessible and is well signposted (see image on right). The route combines low and rugged hills with coastline and cliffs.
The walkway is straightforward and can be walked during any time between April and October. The trail is divided into eight stages—each representing a half-day's walking. Among those responsible for establishing the Sheep's Head Way were Tom Whitty, an American, local farmer James O’Mahony, and Jim Leonard.
The Sheep's Head Way network of trails includes 20 looped walks, and extends eastwards to include Kealkill, Drimoleague and Gougane Barra where it intersects with the Beara-Breifne Way.
A Sheep's Head Way cycle trail also exists, and begins in Ballylickey, County Cork. It extends around the coastline of the Sheep's Head peninsula, and ends in Ballydehob.
The peninsula has three villages, Durrus (six miles from Bantry), Ahakista (twelve miles from Bantry), and Kilcrohane (sixteen miles from Bantry). Durrus has been identified as one of the key staging posts on the Wild Atlantic Way driving route along the Irish coastline and is the home to Durrus Cheese.

West Cork - Ireland
Aerial footage all around Cork but mainly West Cork.
It's no wonder they call West Cork “A Place Apart”. Nature sets the pace in this beautiful south west corner of Ireland, stretching from the south-coast of Kinsale to three rugged westerly peninsulas reaching into the wild Atlantic: Mizen Head, Sheep’s Head and Beara.
West Cork is the place many head for, leaving city lives behind to play along the long zig-zagging coastline, and walk or ride through peaceful inland woods and valleys. Hundreds of inlets, tiny coves, safe harbours and beaches are just right for long active days in the salty air.
There’s something restorative about the temperate climate and sub-tropical gardens, the tranquil lanes thick with fuchsia and montbretia, the sudden glimpses of water through the trees, the shifting light, and the soft greens, greys and violets of bays and distant mountains.
There’s edge-of-the-world drama too: climbing up to a mountain pass through ever-changing weather, crossing the bridge to the end of Mizen Head with the Atlantic crashing below, or taking the cable car to Dursey Island, one of over a hundred West Cork islands. Seven of these are inhabited, including Ireland’s most southerly community on Cape Clear “the storytellers’ island”, where Irish is spoken as a first language, and there’s an independent way of life.
Beyond Cape Clear, the imposing Fastnet Lighthouse stands on a rock known as Ireland’s tear drop, for emigrants to the new world, this was their last sight of their native land. The whole coast echoes with history, ancient sites, ruined castles, coastal forts, copper mines.
West Cork is both very Irish, and quite cosmopolitan, for many have ‘blown-in’ on the winds and stayed to make this beautiful place their home. There’s a strong creative community here.… It’s A Place Apart.
Places featured in this video include the following; Roaringwater Bay, Galley Head, Baltimore, Audley Cove, Mizen Head Lighthouse, Heir Island, Ballydehob, Sherkin Island, The Shakey Bridge, Sundays Well, Three Castle Head, Dursey Cable Car, Bantry House, Long Island, Castle Freke, River Ilen, Glandore, Kinsale, Kilcoe Castle, Liss Ard, Schull, Skeam Island.

Durrus, West Cork.
Aerial footage of Durrus, West Cork.
Durrus meaning Black Headland is a village located in West Cork, six miles (9.7 km) from Bantry, County Cork, Ireland. It is situated at the head of the Sheep's Head peninsula – a European Destination of Excellence – and the Mizen Head peninsula. A number of public gardens have been established in the area, including 'Kilvarock' and 'Cois Abhann'.
Durrus has recently been announced as a key staging post on the new Wild Atlantic Way driving route which will help tourists to explore the Irish coastline from the Inishowen peninsula in Donegal to Kinsale in County Cork.
Discover Ireland - Sheep's Head Peninsula (Eco Eye)
This episode of RTE's Eco Eye TV series was set on the Sheep's Head Peninsula in West Cork, showing the Sheep's Head Way walk around the peninsula. The Sheep's Head Way is a fully-marked 88km walkway; it takes about 5 days to walk the full trail, but there are lots of shorter looped walks along the way. The local farmers and landowners worked together over years as a community initiative to make this walkway happen and have been rewarded by the area being named a European Destination of Excellence.
