Luchita Hurtado: Here I Am | Art21 Extended Play
Episode #264: Luchita Hurtado reflects on her eight-decade-long career and the relationship between the human body and the natural world that is embedded in her work. In her Santa Monica studio, Hurtado works on a new painting from her Birthing series, discussing how her experience of motherhood and her commitment to environmental activism merge in this most recent body of work.
Born in Venezuela, Hurtado describes her childhood growing up in New York City, her first art classes, and the challenges of starting a family while maintaining an artistic practice. It takes a great deal of energy, having the life of a parent and having the life of an artist, recounts Hurtado. My real painting, I could do at night after everyone was asleep.
Speaking with her studio director, Ryan Good, Hurtado explains that it was not until recent years that her work began receiving more attention from curators and museums. The artist travels to the Serpentine Galleries in London to celebrate her first solo exhibition at a public institution, showcasing over one hundred works and charting her many styles of painting and drawing: from dynamic abstractions of human figures to bold self-portraits that depict the artist's body from her own downward-facing perspective, from swirling blue skies with floating feathers to paintings with words like AIR, WATER, and EARTH embedded within them.
Back in Los Angeles, Hurtado paints en plein air in a local park and elucidates on the tenuous relationship between humans and nature, which is the focus of her newest work. We're all on this planet together and we're all related, says the artist. To be in this park, with these trees, it's just the joy of life.
Working in painting, drawing, and prints, Luchita Hurtado has experimented with many different styles over the course of her 80-year career, yet maintained a unique, independent practice that explores the relationship between the human body and the natural world. In reference to a striking series of self-portraits from the 1960s and 1970s, in which the artist painted her body from her own downward facing perspective, Hurtado states, “I concluded that’s all I had in the world, was myself. I am who I am because I’m doing what I want to do, not what I’m told to do.”

To err is to human, and I human a lot. I always try my best to be as correct as possible, but unfortunately I make mistakes. This is the errata where I correct my silly mistakes. My goal is to one day do a video with no errors!
1. The number one is not a prime number. The definition of a prime number is a number can be divided evenly only by 1, or itself. And it must be a whole number GREATER than 1. (This last bit is the bit I forgot).
2. In the trigonometry section I drew cos(theta) = opposite / adjacent. This is the kind of thing you learn in high school and guess what. I got it wrong! Dummy. It should be cos(theta) = adjacent / hypotenuse.
3. My drawing of dice is slightly wrong. Most dice have their opposite sides adding up to 7, so when I drew 3 and 4 next to each other that is incorrect.
4. I said that the Gödel Incompleteness Theorems implied that mathematics is made up by humans, but that is wrong, just ignore that statement. I have learned more about it now, here is a good video explaining it:
5. In the animation about imaginary numbers I drew the real axis as vertical and the imaginary axis as horizontal which is opposite to the conventional way it is done.

Where are all the aliens? | Stephen Webb
The universe is incredibly old, astoundingly vast and populated by trillions of planets -- so where are all the aliens? Astronomer Stephen Webb has an explanation: we're alone in the universe. In a mind-expanding talk, he spells out the remarkable barriers a planet would need to clear in order to host an extraterrestrial civilization -- and makes a case for the beauty of our potential cosmic loneliness. The silence of the universe is shouting, 'We're the creatures who got lucky,' Webb says.

Racism, School Desegregation Laws and the Civil Rights Movement in the United States
The African-American Civil Rights Movement (1955--1968) refers to the social movements in the United States aimed at outlawing racial discrimination against black Americans and restoring voting rights to them. This article covers the phase of the movement between 1955 and 1968, particularly in the South. The emergence of the Black Power Movement, which lasted roughly from 1966 to 1975, enlarged the aims of the Civil Rights Movement to include racial dignity, economic and political self-sufficiency, and freedom from oppression by white Americans.
The movement was characterized by major campaigns of civil resistance. Between 1955 and 1968, acts of nonviolent protest and civil disobedience produced crisis situations between activists and government authorities. Federal, state, and local governments, businesses, and communities often had to respond immediately to these situations that highlighted the inequities faced by African Americans. Forms of protest and/or civil disobedience included boycotts such as the successful Montgomery Bus Boycott (1955--1956) in Alabama; sit-ins such as the influential Greensboro sit-ins (1960) in North Carolina; marches, such as the Selma to Montgomery marches (1965) in Alabama; and a wide range of other nonviolent activities.
Noted legislative achievements during this phase of the Civil Rights Movement were passage of Civil Rights Act of 1964, that banned discrimination based on race, color, religion, or national origin in employment practices and public accommodations; the Voting Rights Act of 1965, that restored and protected voting rights; the Immigration and Nationality Services Act of 1965, that dramatically opened entry to the U.S. to immigrants other than traditional European groups; and the Fair Housing Act of 1968, that banned discrimination in the sale or rental of housing. African Americans re-entered politics in the South, and across the country young people were inspired to action.
Desegregation busing in the United States (also known as forced busing or simply busing) is the practice of assigning and transporting students to schools in such a manner as to redress prior racial segregation of schools, or to overcome the effects of residential segregation on local school demographics.
Clay Shirky: Institutions vs. collaboration
In this prescient 2005 talk, Clay Shirky shows how closed groups and companies will give way to looser networks where small contributors have big roles and fluid cooperation replaces rigid planning.

How to green the world's deserts and reverse climate change | Allan Savory
Desertification is a fancy word for land that is turning to desert, begins Allan Savory in this quietly powerful talk. And terrifyingly, it's happening to about two-thirds of the world's grasslands, accelerating climate change and causing traditional grazing societies to descend into social chaos. Savory has devoted his life to stopping it. He now believes -- and his work so far shows -- that a surprising factor can protect grasslands and even reclaim degraded land that was once desert.

*I’m Michael and I love creating music. I play, compose and record mostly calm and peaceful tunes and started sharing these here on YouTube in 2011.
Music can be much more than just pure entertainment. It can be a meaningful soundtrack that accompanies us through a moment, through a day, a phase, or through life.
Many use my recordings and piano music sessions as background music while reading, doing mind work, to achieve better focus, while studying, while being creative, while coding or designing a product, a service or the world of tomorrow. From your comments I know that my music also works as relaxing music, spa or yoga music, or to set a calm tone at cafes, bars, lounges, in hotels and restaurants, mostly at a low volume.
This project is not as much about a genre as it is about a feeling. A way of life. With my tunes, I try to take a little heat and speed from our generally quite busy lives. A soundtrack for you, when you feel the need for a calm and peaceful, light and positive tune, the relaxdaily way.

DIY Room Decor! In this DIY room decor tutorial I show 10 DIY projects on how to decorate your room. In this DIY room decorations video you won't just find room decor ideas for teenagers, but a complete room makeover project. Using these easy room decor ideas I transformed my room from plain and boring for cheap to absolutely stunning! In this DIY you'll find wall décor ideas, furniture painting, DIY pillows and bunch of décor ideas for your desk, table, night stand or a dresser. Tons of epic DIYS! These room décor ideas are perfect for teenagers or children and can be used in a big or small room. I had so much fun decorating my bedroom and can't wait to share all these amazing room décor DIYs projects with you.
We'll be making:
- DIY Wall Decor, DIY Wall Art: DIY Garland out of paper flowers and DIY Painting with Acrylic Paints
- DIY Pillow, Smile Pillow, Chevron Pillow
- DIY Furniture painting - Drawers
- DIY Room decor ideas for your desk: DIY Pom Pom Flowers, DIY candles with crayons, DIY lamp with confetti butterflies, DIY colored sand for sand waves, DIY vase with colored stones, etc.
I start with furniture painting. In this room decorations video I show how to easily transform your plain furniture. I painted my drawers in pink and minty green and also added white dots all over for a true polka dots overload. I love how my new furniture itself made my small room so much more beautiful, while I haven't even started with the DIY room decor ideas! This DIY project is perfect for girls, teenagers or even children.
I also show how to create 2 kinds of DIY pillows (no sew) for my bedroom. Room décor can't get any better than that! For the first DIY pillow decor I write a word smile on the pillow using yarn. On the second pillow I painted a pretty chevron pattern using blue and pink fabric paint. You basically need only a pillowcase and your creativity for this DIY!
In this DIY tutorial I also show several decor ideas for your desk, night stand or a dresser. One of these is a cactus with colored sand. You can buy already colored sand, or you can color it yourself using food coloring. This is such a fun and quick DIY decor idea and I love how it looks in the end. It also adds so much life to your teenage room.
Every room also needs a cute lamp, right? So in this decor tutorial I show how to make a cheap and pretty lamp using small butterfly confetti. Simply stick the butterflies all over the lamp and you get a beautiful colorful butterfly lamp. One of the cutest DIYs ever!
We all love candles, right? So let's DIY pretty personalized candles that are amazing to look at even when they are not burning. All you do is melt white wax together with a piece of crayon and pour the colored wax mixtures in the glass. Your room will get all cozy and beautiful in a second.
Another decorating idea of incorporating low maintenance plants into your room is a bamboo stick in a vase full of colored stones. Simply hold the bamboo in a vase and pour in layers of colored stones. I love this room decorating idea as it is so easy and brings so much life to any big or small room.
Next from the number of DIY projects in this tutorial are wall décor ideas. First is a DIY paper flower garland which is so easy to make and gives a lot of color and texture to your wall. The second idea is an abstract painting with a word. I went for the word live for my wall art to remind me that we need to live every moment as if it was our last.
Last but not least I show you how to make a pretty pom pom flowers in a jar vase.
Let me know if you would like to see more room decor ideas, since I have many more DIY ideas for our big or small rooms :)

A Simple and Profound Introduction to Self-Inquiry by Sri Mooji
In this Satsang, Sri Mooji re-introduces Self-Inquiry in a very profound but very clear and simple way for everyone. This Satsang is recommended for all to watch – new and 'old' to inquiry.
We don’t need to know many things – we just become confused; you just need to know the right thing – the thing you need to know now. You don’t need 50 keys to open 1 lock. You need the RIGHT key. You can have a thousand keys, and you’ll just be a thousand times confused, more lost. You just need the right key. So today I’m hoping that we have found the right key to open the mystery into our own nature. When you say, “I am….”, which ‘I’ are you referring to? When you say, ‘I’, what does it mean? This is the birth of inquiry.
Don’t be frightened by the inquiry; it is your friend. It is a tool in the pocket of your heart.

This film series explores many aspects of our society. To rethink what is possible in our world, we need to consider what kind of world we want to live in. Although we refer to it as a civilization, it is anything but civilized. Visions of global unity & fellowship have long inspired humanity, yet the social arrangements up to the present have largely failed to produce a peaceful and productive world. While we appear to be technically advanced, our values and behaviors are not. The possibility of an optimistic future is in stark contrast to our current social, economic, and environmental dilemmas. The Choice Is Ours includes interviews with notable scientists, media professionals, authors, and other thinkers exploring the difficulties we face.
Part I provides an introduction and overview of cultural & environmental conditions that are untenable for a sustainable world civilization. It explores the determinants of behavior to dispel the myth of “human nature” while demonstrating how the environment shapes behavior. The science of behavior is an important - yet largely missing - ingredient in our culture.
Part II questions the values, behaviors, and consequences of our social structures, and illustrates how our global monetary system is obsolete and increasingly insufficient to meet the needs of most people. Critical consideration of the banking, media, and criminal justice systems reveals these institutions for what they really are: tools of social control managed by the established political and economic elite. If we stay the present course, the familiar cycles of crime, economic booms & busts, war, and further environmental destruction are inevitable.
Part III explains the methods and potential of science. It proposes solutions that we can apply at present to eliminate the use of non-renewable sources of energy. It depicts the vision of The Venus Project to build an entirely new world from the ground up, a “redesign of the culture,” where all enjoy a high standard of living, free of servitude and debt, while also protecting the environment.
Part IV explains how it is not just architecture and a social structure that is in desperate need of change, but our values which have been handed down from centuries ago. They too need to be updated to our technological age, which has the potential to eliminate our scarcity-driven societies of today. Our problems are mostly of our own making, but we can still turn things around before the point of no return. It’s not too late for an optimistic outlook on the fantastic possibilities that lie before us.

The Venus Project proposes an alternative vision of what the future can be if we apply what we already know in order to achieve a sustainable new world civilization. It calls for a straightforward redesign of our culture in which the age-old inadequacies of war, poverty, hunger, debt, and unnecessary human suffering are viewed not only as avoidable but as totally unacceptable. Anything less will result in a continuation of the same catalog of problems inherent in today's world.
