The Sumida Hokusai Museum | JAPAN Forward
Katsushika Hokusai, a world-renowned ukiyo-e artist, was born in Honjo-Wari-Gesui (presently the Kamezawa area in Sumida Ward, Tokyo) in 1760 and spent almost the entire 90 years of his life in Sumida Ward where he created a large number of masterpieces.
In honor of this outstanding artist whom many local citizens are truly proud of, the Sumida Ward opened the Sumida Hokusai Museum on November 22, 2016 as a base to invigorate the local community and contribute to the region’s industry and tourism.
The collection features an exhibit of his life and the relationship between Hokusai and Sumida through high-definition real-size replicas of representative works and related episodes. In addition, special exhibitions of the results of research and studies on Hokusai and Sumida will be held in the gallery. Moreover, the museum will conduct a broad range of activities aimed at disseminating a wealth of information by holding seminars, lectures, and workshops.
Through these activities, the museum hopes to relay information about Hokusai and Sumida both at home and abroad, with the aim of enhancing the appeal of both.

About JAPAN Forward:
JAPAN Forward is a new English-language news and opinion website run by the JAPAN Forward association Inc.
JAPAN Forward aims to present the true face of Japan, as seen from a wide variety of perspectives, to a rapidly-changing world where unpredictability often outpaces stability. Japan has long lagged behind other countries—all of which have their own points of view—in conveying her own take on the world around.
JAPAN Forward sets out to overcome misunderstandings born of linguistic barriers. In covering major news stories in Japan, along with key points of debate, current events, history, culture, and the arts, we hope to deepen the world’s understanding of the Japanese archipelago.
With the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games on the horizon, there is a great need for a new English-language medium rooted in solid fact and fully cognizant of the history and culture of Japan and the Japanese people. Our expanding network of influential analysts and foreign experts based in Japan and overseas means that we are continuously improving our ability to bring the truth about Japan to an ever-wider English-speaking audience.
At the helm of JAPAN Forward is an editor who has decades of journalism experience in Europe and the United States, while our editorial team of native speakers hails from policy research centers, academia, journalism outlets, and more. This is the real Japan, in real English.
JAPAN Forward is operated by JAPAN Forward Association Inc., which has also established the JAPAN Forward Supporters Network to allow individual and corporate sponsors to join in our mission to keep Japan moving forward and build our recognition in the Anglosphere.

One Minute Architecture: SANAA Sumida Hokusai Museum
A visit to Sanaa's Hokusai Museum in Tokyo. I think the building itself is quite beautiful. The brushed metal clad facade and triangular cut wedges are proportionately well balanced, but that's where it all stops.
SANAA, Kazuyo Sejima and Rye Nishizawa received the Pritzker prize in 2010 for being deceptively simple and for their architecture which stands out in direct contrast with the bombastic.
Ironically great care has been taken by the Sumida-ward who runs the museum to destroy the simplicity of the spaces. Signs and cones are placed everywhere in order to attend people of the sloped walls, windows and staircases, corners.
The programme is rather odd with a toilet right next to the entrance reception. The reception desk, umbrella stands, and other signage are a mere afterthought and don't seem to have been part of the original design. Furthermore, circulation with the main exhibition hall being on the 4th floor and accessible by only two small lifts seems to be problematic as well.
It does not look like that Sumida can count on a Bilbao-effect with this building. I'm also curious to know how much Sanaa was involved in the discussion of the programme.

The Sumida Hokusai Museum is the one of the newest clutural places in Tokyo. This museum is for worldwide Ukiyo-e artist, Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) who spent most of his life in Sumida area.
The Follwings are the excerpts from its official explanation:
He left many works that he had created, most depicting the landscapes of Sumida, such as the Ryogoku Bridge, Mimeguri Shrine, and Ushijima Shrine.
Hokusai's work had already been recognized outside of Japan during his lifetime. For instance, Philipp Franz von Siebold (1796-1866), a visiting doctor at a Dutch trading post in Japan, adopted works of Hokusai Manga (Hokusai Sketchbooks) into his book Nippon, which was published between 1832 and 1851. However, it was only after the onset of Japonism popularity upon the International Exposition of 1867 held in Paris that his name became highly acknowledged. Ukiyo-e was introduced along with a number of artifacts during the world's fair. The dynamic composition and bright coloring were revolutionary to the European art world causing a major impact towards European artists, and triggering the birth of impressionism.

Fantastic Places in Cool Japan :
Opened in 2016, the “Sumida Hokusai Museum” is a new-style sightseeing spot where you can enjoy the Edo period‘s Ukiyoe (Nishikie) and paintings in a modern building. You can see the Tokyo Skytree from the top floor of the building, and it has become a hot topic as a new landmark in downtown Tokyo.
Although this museum is compact and has a small number of exhibits, it is also close to the Edo-Tokyo Museum and Ryogoku Kokugikan, which are perfect for inclusion in a tourist course.

A day in Sumida Ward; Following in the footsteps of Hokusai
For the typical foreign tourist to Tokyo, a stop at Asakusa’s temples and souvenir shops is a must. Visitors tend to stop by the edge of the Sumida river and take pictures with the iconic TOKYO SKYTREE℠ in the background. However, not everyone takes the time to cross the Azuma-bashi Bridge into Sumida ward. Home to the imposing TOKYO SKYTREE℠, the other side of the Sumida river is quieter but no less interesting and has an authentic feel to it. While exploring it’s calm streets where you can find with hidden history and art in the most unlikely places, we encountered the spots that served as inspiration for one of the most influential Japanese artists: Katsushika Hokusai.
