To be always mindful of that call, she has Faithful Servant inscribed on her bishop's ring. Joan's many years of parish ministry, and her experience as a wife and mother has prepared her well for her pastoral role. Married for forty-eight years, Joan and John have six children, eight grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Andrea Michele Johnson resides in Annapolis, MD, and has been elected to serve as bishop for the Eastern Region. She has worked in international education exchange with the senior Fulbright Scholar Program, and also as a director of religious education over many years. She was pastoral minister in a priestless Catholic parish in the mid-1980s and also served as a former director of the Womens Ordination Conference, Andrea currently works in hospital chaplaincy. She is happily married to Spencer, her husband of thirty-nine years and is the mother of three adult children two sons and one daughter, and is the grandmother of two.
Maria Regina Nicolosi was elected by the members of the Midwest Region to be their bishop. Regina was born in the Rhineland, Germany, close to the Abbey of St. Hildegard and before she moved to the USA, she was a teacher. After raising her family, Regina worked as a senior housing manager and a nursing home chaplain. Currently, she celebrates Eucharist with small faith communities and has served as the program coordinator for the Midwest region. In this role she has helped prepare several women for priestly ordination. Regina is married and has four children and eight grandchildren. She and her husband Charles live in Red Wing, MN. Employee of the Year - Wes Byington
Wes Byington and his impressive work ethic were discovered by City of Sarasota staff in 2013 when he was participating in the Street Teams -- a homeless program funded by the City of Sarasota and operated by The Salvation Army. As part of the program, homeless individuals provide landscaping work and litter collection for the City. Wes was such a notable standout he was encouraged to apply for a full time landscaping position with the City. Two years later, he has earned two professional certifications and has been promoted twice. He now oversees facilities maintenance at all 49 City parks. Being handy, knowledgeable and creative, Wes is able to make repairs without hiring a contractor, saving the City thousands of dollars. A deputy is facing an internal affairs investigation after a video shows him calling a black man “boy” in an expletive-filled encounter that escalated into grabbing the man by the throat.
Deputy James Cady’s body camera recorded his exchange with Allen Floyd outside a Dania Beach hotel in July 2017. Public defenders said they were stunned by Cady’s behavior in the video, which they watched recently while preparing for the coming trial of a woman arrested that night.

11 ARRESTED IN JOINT OPERATION ‘DEVIANT DESIRE’ TARGETING INTERNET PREDATORS
Eleven men accused of traveling to meet a minor for sex were arrested in the latest undercover sting operation in Volusia County, Sheriff Mike Chitwood and partner agencies announced in a news conference this morning.
The five-day “Operation Deviant Desire” resulted in the arrests of defendants ranging in age from 19 to 55 years old on various felony charges, including using a computer to lure a child, traveling to seduce/solicit/lure/entice a child, attempted lewd or lascivious battery and using a 2-way communications device to commit a felony.
“It makes you want to throw up, to listen to what these guys are requesting a 14-year-old perform on them, and what they want to perform on a 14-year-old,” Sheriff Chitwood said in a Tuesday morning news conference attended by several other agencies that participated in the effort. Sheriff Chitwood credited the Task Force members with working around the clock to identify and arrest predators seeking sexual activity with children, and again warned parents that the Internet can be a dangerous place for kids whose activities aren’t monitored.
The other clear message was for the predators, who continue to travel to meet children for sex despite the obvious knowledge that these stings exist.
As in so many other operations, undercover detectives posing as 14- and 15-year-old children chatted with the suspects before each man traveled to meet the child at public locations in Volusia County.
Those arrested, listed along with a brief, partial excerpt from their conversations, were:
• Pengzhou He, 25 (DOB 3/3/1994), Sanford, Chinese national: “but I need You promise you’re 14. You’re not a bad guy.”
• Carlos Charles-Martinez, 55 (DOB 8/10/1964), Daytona Beach: (sexually explicit comments followed by “Oh ok cool” upon learning the child was 14)
• Laneil Wilkins, 29 (DOB 1/1/1990), listed address of Henrico, Va.: “I want us to get naked when I get there”
• Mauricio Luna, 26 (DOB 4/14/1993), Deltona, Mexican national: “Let’s f***” (in possession of personal lubricant at time of arrest)
• David Shook, 33 (DOB 1/8/1986), Altamonte Springs: “Wow didn’t look that young” (in possession of condoms, a handgun and a knife at time of arrest)
• Kareem Farrelly, 33 (DOB 11/12/1985), Deltona: “I figured you was real young” (in possession of condoms at time of arrest)
• Michail Hackett, 20 (DOB 5/14/1999), Sanford, Jamaican national: “Fun to me at this time of the night is sex I’m just being honest” (stated he did not know having sex with a 14-year-old is illegal in the United States; received a speeding ticket from the Sanford Police Department for traveling 69 mph in a 35 mph zone just prior to his arrest in Volusia County)
• Gregory Webley, 37 (DOB 5/14/1982), Fort Pierce: “I can show u so much and show u how a man treats a woman” (in possession of condoms at time of arrest)
• Kumar Speicher, 41 (DOB 5/4/1978), Jacksonville: “You home with your parents?” (in possession of condoms, loose pills, a sex toy, male stamina pills and a bottle with an unknown liquid at time of arrest)
• Nirajkumar Kapadia, 24 (DOB 9/3/1995), Winter Park: “OMG so are you a virgin”
• Samuel Reyes, 19 (DOB 10/15/1999), Eustis: “Well we can do oral sex???”
The agencies participating in this North Florida Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force operation included the Volusia, Flagler, St. Johns, Brevard, Putnam and Clay sheriff’s offices, police from Daytona Beach, Port Orange, Gainesville and Orange Park, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida, Homeland Security Investigations, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the State Attorney’s Office for the 7th Judicial Circuit.
Hysteria Against Syrian Refugees Echoes US Rejection of Jewish Refugees in 1930s
The firestorm of controversy that erupted over whether the United States should continue to accept Syrian refugees after the deadly attacks in Paris includes a bill by House Republican lawmakers to restrict Iraqi and Syrian refugees from resettling here. At least 31 U.S. states have said they will not accept the refugees, and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has said, We can’t have them. They are going back. Others are drawing historical parallels with a different refugee crisis the country faced in the 1930s, when Jewish refugees sought refuge here. Case Western Reserve University history professor Peter Schulman recently tweeted a Fortune Magazine poll question from 1939 that asked, Should the U.S. government permit 10,000 mostly Jewish refugee children to come in from Germany? The results showed 61 percent of respondents at the time said no. Among those seeking refuge and denied entry were Anne Frank and her family. The nativist response then has very clear echos now, says Ishaan Tharoor, foreign affairs reporter for The Washington Post, whose recent article is headlined, Yes, the comparison between Jewish and Syrian refugees matters.

VCSO cleaning up streets of DeLand: 4/18/19
A proactive drug buy/bust Volusia County Sheriff’s Office operation in the city of DeLand and surrounding area resulted in the arrests of a dozen people Thursday, with others arrested in the days leading up to the operation, and others still to be picked up on arrest warrants for sale and delivery of narcotics.
Members of the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office West Volusia Narcotics Task Force, along with members of the Deltona Narcotics Enforcement Team and West Volusia and East Side Crime Suppression Teams, worked with detectives to conduct undercover purchases of drugs in areas where open sale of narcotics has been a recurring issue.
Those arrested as a result of Thursday’s operation were:
