Exploring Bonn, Bad Godesberg & Königswinter, North Rhine Westphalia, Germany - August 2018
Exploring Bonn, Bad Godesberg & Königswinter, North Rhine Westphalia, Germany - August 2018.
The Federal City of Bonn is a city on the banks of the River Rhine in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, and is situated about 24 km (15 mi) south-southeast of Cologne. Bonn is in the southernmost part of the Rhine-Ruhr region, Germany's largest metropolitan area, with over 11 million inhabitants. Because of a political compromise following German reunification, the German federal government maintains a substantial presence in Bonn, and the city is considered a second, unofficial, capital of the country. To read more about Bonn, click here: .
Bad Godesberg is a municipal district of Bonn, southern North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. From 1949 to 1999, while Bonn was the capital of West Germany and later Germany, most foreign embassies were in Bad Godesberg. To read more about Bad Godesberg, click here: .
Königswinter is situated on the right bank of the Rhine, opposite Bad Godesberg, at the foot of the Siebengebirge. It covers an area of 76.19 square kilometres which makes it the fourth-largest conurbation in the Rhein-Sieg district. It contains over 80 townships and boroughs, divided over the municipal districts of Stieldorf, Niederdollendorf, Oberdollendorf, Heisterbacherrott, Ittenbach, Oberpleis, Eudenbach, Thomasberg and Königswinter proper. To read more about Königswinter, click here: .
This film features an extensive and detailed exploration of Bonn, Bad Godesberg and Königswinter. The film begins at Boon Hauptbahnhof, before taking a walking tour of the city centre and Sudstadt areas, from here the tram (stadtbahn) is taken to Hochkreuz, where the journey continues on foot through Gronau, and along the River Rhine including the Freizeitpark Rheinaue.
The journey south, crosses the border back into Hochkreuz, before going through Plittersdorf, and Rüngsdorf to get the ferry across the River Rhine to Königswinter. Here a couple of brief stops for food and a swim at the Maritim Hotel are followed by a walk around the city centre, and a ride up and down the Drachenfels Railway, where views across North Rhine Westphalia and Rhineland Palatinate are taken in.
After Königswinter, the tram is taken up the East bank of the River Rhine, back to Hochkreuz, where there is a small detour on foot through the Maritim Hotel, Bonn, before taking the tram back to Bonn Hauptbahnhof, and finally the train out of Bonn North. This film was made over three separate days.

KOLN // COLOGNE // BY THE RIVER (2018)
Cologne Köln is the largest city in the German federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia and the fourth most populated city in Germany (after Berlin, Hamburg, and Munich). It is located within the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region which is Germany's largest and one of Europe's major metropolitan areas. Cologne is about 45 kilometres (28 mi) southwest of North Rhine-Westphalia's capital of Dusseldorf and 25 kilometres (16 mi) northwest of Bonn.
Cologne is located on both sides of the Rhine, near Germany's borders with Belgium and the Netherlands. The city's famous Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom) is the seat of the Catholic Archbishop of Cologne. The University of Cologne (Universität zu Köln) is one of Europe's oldest and largest universities.
Cologne Cathedral, officially Hohe Domkirche Sankt Petrus, Cathedral Church of Saint Peter is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Cologne, Germany. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Cologne and of the administration of the Archdiocese of Cologne. It is a renowned monument of German Catholicism and Gothic architecture and was declared a World Heritage Site in 1996.] It is Germany's most visited landmark, attracting an average of 20,000 people a day, and currently the tallest twin-spired church at 157 m (515 ft) tall.
Construction of Cologne Cathedral commenced in 1248 and was halted in 1473, leaving it unfinished. Work restarted in the 19th century and was completed, to the original plan, in 1880. The cathedral is the largest Gothic church in Northern Europe and has the second-tallest spires. The towers for its two huge spires give the cathedral the largest façade of any church in the world. The choir has the largest height to width ratio, 3.6:1, of any medieval church.
Cologne's medieval builders had planned a grand structure to house the reliquary of the Three Kings and fit its role as a place of worship for the Holy Roman Emperor. Despite having been left incomplete during the medieval period, Cologne Cathedral eventually became unified as a masterpiece of exceptional intrinsic value and a powerful testimony to the strength and persistence of Christian belief in medieval and modern Europe.
Kranhaus (crane house, plural Kranhäuser) refers to each one of the three 17-story buildings in the Rheinauhafen of Cologne. Their shape, an upside-down L, is reminiscent of the harbor cranes that were used to load cargo off of and on to ships, two of which were left standing as monuments when the harbor was redesigned as a residential and commercial quarter in the early 2000s. Each building is approx. 62 meters in height, 70,20 meters long, and 33,75 meters wide. They were designed by Aachen architect Alfons Linster and Hamburg-based Hadi Teherani of BRT Architekten. Construction began on 16 October 2006, and the first building was completed in 2008.
The southern and middle buildings provide approx. 16,000 square meters (172,200 square feet) of office space each, on 15 levels. The northern one harbors 133 luxury apartments totalling approx. 15,000 square meters on 18 levels.

More information about the video content bellow:
1. North Rhine-Westphalia is located in western Germany covering an area of 34,084 square kilometres. With a population of 17.9 million, it is the most populous state in Germany. It is also the most densely populated German state apart from the city-states of Berlin, Bremen, and Hamburg, and the fourth-largest by area.
2. North Rhine-Westphalia in its current form came into existence in 1946, however you will still find the landscape to be steeped in history, taking you from the Stone Age to modern day. From the Neanderthal - who was discovered in the eponymous valley just outside Düsseldorf - to the archaeological park in Xanten where the former Roman settlement has been brought back to life, to Charlemagne’s throne in Aachen, to the city hall in Münster - site of the signing of the Peace of Westphalia which marked the end of the 30 Years War - there’s plenty to discover.
The Haus der Geschichte in Bonn deserves a special mention; the museum covers German history post-1945 and is an essential stop for anyone who wants to understand how modern Germany came to be.
3. Dusseldorf is the capital and second-largest city of the most populous German federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia after Cologne, as well as the seventh-largest city in Germany, with a population of 617,280. Mercer's 2012 Quality of Living survey ranked Düsseldorf the sixth most livable city in the world.
4. NRW has the highest urban density and the largest number of cities of any of the German states. Definite highlights are the Rhine cities of Düsseldorf, Bonn and Cologne, Germany’s bicycle capital Münster and the home of Germany’s best known Christmas Market outside of Bavaria, Aachen.
5. Cologne or Köln is the largest city of Germany's most populous federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, and its 1 million+ (2016) inhabitants make it the fourth most populous city in Germany. Cologne was one of the most heavily bombed cities in Germany during World War II, with the Royal Air Force (RAF) dropping 34,711 long tons (35,268 tonnes) of bombs on the city.
6. The Federal City of Bonn is a city on the banks of the Rhine in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia and is the former capital of the Federal Republic of Germany, before the reunification. Because of a political compromise following German reunification, the German federal government maintains a substantial presence in Bonn, and the city is considered a second, unofficial, capital of the country. Bonn is the secondary seat of the President, the Chancellor, the Bundesrat and the primary seat of six federal government ministries and twenty federal authorities.
7. Beethoven was born in Bonn, then the capital of the Electorate of Cologne and part of the Holy Roman Empire. He displayed his musical talents at an early age and was taught by his father Johann van Beethoven and composer and conductor Christian Gottlob Neefe.

[4K] Cloudy Day City Walk - Video Tour of Aachen City - West Germany City Walk
In this cloudy day city walk in West Germany, I will take you on a video tour of Aachen city. Aachen developed from a Roman settlement and spa, subsequently becoming the preferred medieval Imperial residence of Charlemagne, and, from 936 to 1531, the place where 31 Holy Roman Emperors were crowned Kings of the Germans. Aachen is the westernmost city in Germany, located near the borders with Belgium and the Netherlands, 61km west south west of Cologne in a former coal-mining area. One of Germany's leading institutes of higher education in technology, the RWTH Aachen University, is located in the city. This is another West Germany city walk where I am exploring the city-center in a compact form. I hope you can relax and enjoy this walk. The city is located 2 hours from the place where I live and I might return in the future if you would like to see more of it.
Feel free to give me feedback for this video and please like and subscribe to my channel if you enjoy my work.

Germany’s Black Forest: The Tourist Trap and the Bliss
This two-part clip from the Black Forest illustrates how, wherever you travel, you can have dramatically different experiences in the same destination. Most travelers, driven by “bucket lists,” get sucked into the highly promoted tourist trap version of a place. (In the Black Forest, they end up in Titisee — part one of this clip.) Some, however, step away from the commercial zone (so expert at bamboozling travelers and corrupting the industry) and manage to reach that “off the beaten path” dimension of the same sight (part two of this clip).
The sad reality is that the vast majority of visitors to Europe’s most-dreamed-about destinations have their romantic vision trampled by mobs of travelers on big bus tours and cruises. (Here in the Black Forest, it’s river cruises.) And the even sadder reality is that most don’t even realize the lost opportunity. The goal for us “Back Door travelers”: to turn our travel dreams into a pristine and unforgettable reality. In this clip, my guide, Simone Brixel (Black Forest Tours), shows us two very different sides of the Black Forest. The choice is yours.
