Day Trip to Sorrento, Italy Travel Guide Video Transcript:
Considered the official start of the Amalfi Coast, the cliff-perched town of Sorrento makes for a quick and easy day trip. We caught the train in Pompei at Villa dei Misteri and took the Circumvesuviana line all the way down the coast. Our plan for the day? To eat and wander around without much of an itinerary.
Since we were visiting just before the holidays, the streets were decked out with all sorts of Christmas decorations. We befriended a few dogs along the way, and then we found a spot to indulge in coffees and pastries.
After walking through the town, we started making our way down to the waterfront, more specifically, to Marina Grande. This harbour is line with pastel-coloured buildings, boats bobbing in the water, and lots of seafood restaurants.
After walking the length of the marina and browsing through menus, we finally settled on a restaurant for lunch: Zi’Ntonio Mare.
Making our way back to town, we also attempted to visit Sorrento Cathedral, but we arrived outside of opening hours so here’s a quick look from the exterior.
From there, we continued down some of Sorrento’s pedestrian-friendly side streets, which were lined with small shops and outdoor produce stalls. Limoncello seemed to be by far the most popular souvenir, so if you’re looking for a taste of the famed lemon liqueur, this is a good place to stock up!
Our last stop of the day were the Cloisters of San Francis, where there was a small art exhibition taking place. These cloisters are also located in small park with great views of the coastline and the Mediterranean Sea, so we enjoyed the views one last time and then it was time to head back.
This is part of our Travel in Italy video series showcasing Italian food, Italian culture and Italian cuisine.

SORRENTO TRAVEL GUIDE (Amalfi Coast)
Thinking of travelling to Sorrento? I visited with my family in July 2017, here's a guide of great things you could do...
The weather was absolutely perfect while we were there, but not what we are used to. We were surprised that the Italian food wasn't as good as we were expecting, for example I ordered a tomato pasta and literally got raw tomatoes on a bed of pasta covered in oil... WHAT?
One tip for drone pilots: the seagulls are crazy there so when flying your drone watch out for them! I had a flock of about 60 all swooping down trying to take out my drone, so stay away from the drone killers!
We stayed in the amazing Hotel Miramare:
One day we decided to rent a boat and sail across to Capri, this was definitely the best thing we did. The views were incredible and our captain Damiano told us all about the history of Capri which was interesting.
Here's the company we used:
We also rented kayaks from this company:

Sorrento Tour - What to see on a 1 day trip
How to get to Sorrento in Italy and what you can see on holiday in 1 day.
About Sorrento: Sorrento is a town overlooking the Bay of Naples in southern Italy.
It’s within sight of Mount Vesuvius, the only active volcano in mainland Europe.
A popular tourist destination, Sorrento is easy to reach from Naples airport by bus.
Or you can take the Circumvesuviana railway, passing Herculaneum and Pompeii on the way.
My video of what to see in Positano is here (3m10s):
My video of what to see in Capri is here (3m33s):
You can see my Pompeii tour video here (9m06s):
And you can see my Herculaneum tour video here (7m56s):
There are also ferries across the bay to Sorrento’s Marina Piccola.
You can catch ferries from here to the islands of Capri and Ischia as well as back to Naples .
Summer services also run around the Amalfi coastline.
Piazza Tasso, the main square, is a great place to stay.
We stayed at Maison d’Art overlooking the square. It’s a small B&B with friendly staff, free wif-fi AND free cake and a good breakfast.
The elegant cafés in Piazza Tasso, such as the Fauno Bar, are great places to relax and watch the world go by.
Piazza Tasso was named after the 16th century poet Torquato Tasso.
Sorrento is busy with traffic and people all day, even in April, when this film was shot.
and the locals like to weave through the narrow streets on motorbikes and scooters.
Of course, if you fancy something more sedate there are horse-drawn carriages for hire.
The fishing village , Marina Grande, is a great spot to relax away from the busy town centre.
Restaurants, homes and shops rise along the seafront, yet the village has maintained its rustic charm, original identity, and a sense of community.
There's a cottage industry approach toMarina Grande's ancient and primary source of survival, which is fishing.
Plenty of orange trees adorn Sorrento’s streets.
In fact, the cuisine here is big on citrus fruit as well as fish, pizza and pasta.
The varieties of lemon grown around Sorrento date back to Roman times and locals believe that their lemons are the best in the world.
The local liqueur, limoncello, is made from the zest of Sorrento lemons.
Lemons can grow impressively big in these parts too!
Of course, you can buy products from all over Italy here in Sorrento.
Glass is from the Venetian island of Murano, for example.
Or locally produced ceramics.
And Sorrento’s renowned inlaid woodwork.
There are also shops selling a huge variety of leather bags
and stylish shoes and sandals are available at good prices too.
Italy is a Catholic nation and, as you walk around Sorrento, you can see a number of shrines to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Before you leave Sorrento, be sure to check out the Valley of the Mills, just behind Piazza Tasso.
The mill area was isolated from the sea by the construction of Piazza Tasso, which raised the humidity in the valley to unbearable levels and caused the mills in the valley to be abandoned in 1866.
Finally, as day becomes evening you can experience the nighttime ritual of la passeggiata.
As Italians dress up for a gentle stroll through the main streets of the old town, it’s a chance to see and be seen.

5 Top-Rated Day Trips from Sorrento
Sorrento's location on the Bay of Naples is not only a beautiful one, but it's well positioned as a base for exploring the entire region. The Bay of Naples and the Amalfi Peninsula, which forms its southern shore, are lined with some of Italy's best known tourist attractions. You can hop a boat to Naples, the idyllic Isle of Capri, or the Amalfi Coast. The Circumvesuviana train takes you to Pompeii and Herculaneum, and from either of these, it's a short bus ride to Vesuvius, the mountain that destroyed both of these ancient cities. It's even easier to see any of these places on the many day tours that are offered from Sorrento.
1. Pompeii
2. Capri

Here's the Capri video narrative:
Capri is a small Italian island in the Bay of Naples, about 5 kilometers from the mainland.
We visited on a day trip in April, arriving via a fast jet ferry from Sorrento and avoiding the peak summer season, when the island can be overrun with tourists.
Capri is also easy to reach by ferry from Naples.
We arrived at Capri’s main port, Marina Grande, which is on the north coast.
From here you can take boat trips, for example to the Blue Grotto, which is a flooded sea-cave, or you can take a boat to the south coast to see the Faraglioni Rocks.
However, with limited time we decided to make for Capri town, then on to to Anacapri and Monte Solaro.
To get from Marina Grande up to Capri town we took the funicular railway which connects the harbour to the Piazzetta, the town’s main square.
Capri’s two main centres, Capri town and its uphill rival Anacapri, are almost entirely given over to tourism and prices can be high.
Capri is a world-famous beauty spot and it’s also a summer favourite of holidaying VIPs.
The Piazzetta is full of fashionable bars and it’s well worth stopping for an espresso. You might even see one of those VIPs!
The square is dominated by a free-standing clock tower.
Note the tiled clock face.
Capri is well known for its maiolica tiles.
Here they can be seen forming a map of the island.
We boarded a crowded bus to Anacapri and explored the island’s second town.
Walking along Via Giuseppe Orlandi, we saw the Casa Rossa, a brightly coloured house built in the late 1800s by an American colonel. It’s now a museum.
Continuing along this road, we reached Piazza San Nicola and the Church of San Michele, built in Italian baroque style at the turn of the 18th century.
Built on an octagonal Greek cross plan, the church is famous for its maiolica floor decoration depicting the expulsion of Adam and Eve. It was completed in 1761.
For an impressive view of the entire floor, you can climb the spiral staircase to the organ loft and look out over the church from above.
More maiolica tiles can be seen nearby, decorating the benches in Piazza Armando Diaz.
The Monte Solaro chairlift is also in Anacapri, and it reaches the top of the 589 meters high mountain within minutes.
From the summit there are picturesque views over the island and across the Bay of Naples and the Gulf of Salerno.
There’s also a great view of the Faraglioni Rocks from here.
These three spurs of rock rise from the sea within meters of the coast and are one of the favourite destinations for boat tours of the island’s coast.
We hiked down from the summit back to Anacapri. The path is quite uneven in places but the walk is well worth it for the changing panoramas.
On the way down, you can see a series of small bronze plaques. Each represents a stop on the Via Crucis, or Way of the Cross.
We headed back to Marina Grande and caught the last ferry back to Sorrento, which left late afternoon.
You can see plenty of this beautiful island in a few hours, but don’t expect to fit everything in.
Next time, maybe we’ll get to the Blue Grotto!

Experience Italy: Sorrento Peninsula
If it feels like Italy’s offerings are endless, that’s probably because they are. While you may never be able to explore the whole country in one trip, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try. If you’ve always dreamed of immersing yourself in the history, culture, and food of this amazing country, you’re in luck. Let TourRadar take you through even more of the best spots and hidden gems around the Sorrento Peninsula, one of Italy’s most jaw-dropping destinations.
The Sorrento Peninsula is home to some of Italy’s best sights, tastes, and experiences: sip on authentic limoncello, made from the region’s famous lemons, explore the unique gothic architecture of the ancient towns, or embrace Italy’s cultural and religious significance.
On the southern edge of the peninsula you’ll find the Amalfi coast, where you can relax by the beach, chat with locals in markets and restaurants, or hike the famous “Path of the Gods.” The Amalfi is known for amazing food and gorgeous views: even the pickiest eaters and the most discerning travellers are sure to find something to love about it.
If history’s more your thing, check out the lost city of Pompeii, which sits on the peninsula’s western side. Wander the preserved streets to get a real glimpse of what life in this once-bustling city was like. Hike to the top of Mt. Vesuvius for great views of the ruin, and to see what was lost when this dormant volcano erupted all those years ago.
Looking for relaxation? Few places have you covered better than the Sorrento Peninsula. Take a boat to the seaside towns that dot the coast, indulge in a little retail therapy, or just enjoy the atmosphere of some of Italy’s best beaches.
Whether you’re looking for inspiration, getting excited about an upcoming trip, or just daydreaming about pasta and pizza, we hope this video has you ready to experience la dolce vita. We’re sure you’re more than ready to check out the Sorrento Peninsula for yourself, so what are you waiting for?
