Rovinj Wiki:
Rovinj-Rovigno was already a settlement of Venetian or Illyrian tribes before being captured by the Romans, who called it Arupinium or Mons Rubineus, and later Ruginium and Ruvinium. Built on an island close to the coast, it became connected to the mainland much later, in 1763, by filling in the channel.[4]
Rovigno was eventually incorporated into the Byzantine Empire, later becoming part of the Exarchate of Ravenna in the 6th century, before being taken over by the Frankish Empire in 788. For the following several centuries it was ruled by a succession of feudal lords, and in 1209 it was acquired by the Patriarchate of Aquileia under Wolfger von Erla.
From 1283 to 1797 Rovigno was one of the most important towns in Istria governed by the Republic of Venice. During this period three town gates were constructed and Rovinj was fortified by two rows of defensive walls, remains of which can still be seen today. Nearby the Rovinj/Rovigno pier one can find one of the old town gates, the Balbi's Arch, dating from 1680, and a late-Renaissance clock tower. The first city statute was proclaimed in 1531.
Following the fall of Venice in 1797 and the ensuing Napoleonic interlude, Rovigno became part of the Austrian Empire, which lasted until World War I. According to the last Austrian census in 1911, 97.8% of the population was Italian-speaking. It then belonged to Kingdom of Italy from 1918 to 1947, when it was ceded to SFR Yugoslavia, as part of SR Croatia. The original town name Rovigno was then changed into Rovinj. During the post-war period many Italian inhabitants left Rovinj/Rovigno, which led to significant changes to Rovinj/Rovigno's demographic structure.
Following Croatia's independence in 1991, the town became one of the most important centers of Istria County, an administrative unit encompassing most of Istria. Rovinj/Rovigno is today the third most populous town in the county, behind Pula/Pola and Poreč/Parenzo.

The peninsula of Istria
Istria (/ˈɪstriə/ ISS-tree-ə; Croatian, Slovene: Istra; Istriot: Eîstria; Italian: Istria; German: Istrien), formerly Histria (Latin), Ίστρια (Ancient Greek), is the largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea. The peninsula is located at the head of the Adriatic between the Gulf of Trieste and the Kvarner Gulf. It is shared by three countries: Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy.[1][2] Croatia encapsulates most of the Istrian peninsula with its Istria County (Regione istriana in italian).
Borders and roads in Istria
The geographical features of Istria include the Učka mountain ridge, which is the highest portion of the Ćićarija mountain range; the rivers Dragonja, Mirna, Pazinčica, and Raša; and the Lim bay and valley. Istria lies in three countries: Croatia, Slovenia and Italy. By far the largest portion (89%) lies in Croatia. Croatian Istria is divided into two counties, the larger being Istria County in western Croatia. Important towns in Istria County include Pula/Pola, Poreč/Parenzo, Rovinj/Rovigno, Pazin/Pisino, Labin/Albona, Umag/Umago, Motovun/Montona, Buzet/Pinguente, and Buje/Buie. Smaller towns in Istria County include Višnjan, Roč, and Hum.
The northwestern part of Istria lies in Slovenia: it is known as Slovenian Istria, and includes the coastal municipalities of Piran/Pirano, Izola/Isola and Koper/Capodistria, and the Karstic municipality of Hrpelje-Kozina.
Northwards of Slovenian Istria, there is a tiny portion of the peninsula that lies in Italy.[1][2] This smallest portion of Istria consists of the comunes of Muggia and San Dorligo della Valle, with Santa Croce (Trieste) lying farthest to the north.
The ancient region of Histria extended over a much wider area, including the whole Kras plateau until the southern edges of the Vipava Valley, the southwestern portions of modern Inner Carniola with Postojna and Ilirska Bistrica, and the Italian Province of Trieste, but not the Liburnian coast which was already part of Illyricum.[3]

Scenes from Rovinj, Istria, Croatia
Rovinj is a city in Croatia situated on the north Adriatic Sea. It is located on the western coast of the Istrian peninsula and is a popular tourist resort and an active fishing port.
Originally the peninsula on which the city lies was an island, separated from the mainland by a channel. The latter was filled in 1763. Rovinj Archipelago includes 22 islets.
From 1283 to 1797 Rovinj was one of the most important towns of Istria under the Republic of Venice. The city was fortified by two rows of walls with three town gates. The remaining town walls date from this period. Close to the pier one can find the old town gate Balbi's Arch, dating from 1680, and a late-Renaissance clock tower. The city got its statutes in 1531.
After the fall of Venice and the Napoleonic interlude, Rovinj was part of the Austrian Empire until World War I. According to the last Austrian census in 1911, 97.8% of the population was Italian-speaking. Then it belonged to Italy from 1918 to 1947, when it was ceded to SR Croatia within SFR Yugoslavia. During that period many of the Italian inhabitants left the city.

ROVINJ - Croatia Travel Guide | Around The World
Rovinj/Rovigno ; Italian: Rovigno, Ancient Greek: Ρυγίνιον (Ryginion), Latin: Ruginium) is a city in Croatia situated on the north Adriatic Sea with a population of 14,294 (2011). Located on the western coast of the Istrian peninsula, it is a popular tourist resort and an active fishing port. Istriot, a Romance language once widely spoken in this part of Istria, is still spoken by some of the residents. The town is officially bilingual, Italian and Croatian, hence both town names are official and equal.
Rovinj/Rovigno was already a settlement of Venetian or Illyrian tribes before being captured by the Romans, who called it Arupinium or Mons Rubineus, and later Ruginium and Ruvinium. Built on an island close to the coast, it became connected to the mainland much later, in 1763, by filling in the channel.
The main economic activity in Rovinj/Rovigno is tourism and during peak season (May–September), its bars, restaurants and art galleries work long hours, while operating limited hours off-season.
The busiest area is the very centre of Rovinj/Rovigno, extending from the main bus station towards the old part of town, where most bars and clubs are located.
The town's main central thoroughfare is the fully pedestrian Carrera Street, with many independent shops and art galleries. A farmer's market is located at the edge of the historic part of town, near Valdibora Square.
According to data compiled by Istria Tourist Board, Rovinj/Rovigno is the second biggest tourist destination in the county, in terms of overnight stays. The two closest airports are Pula/Pola (Croatia) and Trieste (Italy) and during the summer season, low-cost airlines such as Ryanair operate direct flights from western Europe to both airports.
Also during the summer season, there is a direct high speed ferry link between Venice and Rovinj/Rovigno. High speed weekly lines to the Port of Ravenna and Cesenatico are also available in the summer.
There are numerous hotels in the town itself, and beds are abundant though usually overbooked in the summer months. Accommodation ranges from private rooms or apartments to bungalows, camping sites and 2 to 4 star hotels. The city also has two luxury, 5-star boutique hotels, Hotel Monte Mulini and Hotel Lone. Apart from hotels on the mainland, there are also a handful of hotels on small islands surrounding Rovinj/Rovigno which are linked to the mainland by boats which go from the city centre to the hotel on the islands.

The Rovinj/Rovigno islands and mainland. These natural sights have been described as outstanding scenic wonders, because of the pristine beauty of the indented coastline and its forests, consisting of holm oak and Alpine pine trees. This area of outstanding natural beauty extends from St. Ivan promontory to Barbariga, including all the Rovinj/Rovigno islands and the mainland 500 metres from the shore line. The Rovinj/Rovigno archipelago consists of 19 islands.
Limska Draga Fjord
The Palud marsh and the Due Sorelle Islands - The Due Sorelle (Two Sisters) islands are a nesting site for seagulls. Because of its thick holm oak forest the Gustinja promontory is regarded as a forest vegetation reserve.

The preferred means of transport for getting around Rovinj/Rovigno is by car. Rovinj/Rovigno is well-connected with the rest of Istria and with larger cities in the region such as Trieste, Rijeka, Ljubljana and Zagreb.
The centre of Rovinj/Rovigno, which includes the old town, is very walkable and transportation by bike or scooter is a preferred means of getting around for many locals.
The closest commercial international airports are Pula/Pola (20 miles), Trieste-Ronchi (70 miles) and Rijeka-Krk (80 miles). Car rental is available at each of the airports.
Rovinj/Rovigno is served by the Kanfanar railway station (10 miles), which connects the region to Rijeka/Fiume. However, travelling by bus is preferred to travelling by train due to the limited connections and schedules. The main bus station is located at the south-east end of Carrera Street.

Scenes from the Town of Cres, Island of Cres, Istria, Croatia
Cres is a Croatian town found on the Island of Cres which can be found directly off the Istrian Peninsula and in the Kvarner Gulf.
Cres is basically a city on the bay, as its town docks come directly into the middle of the city and are filled with boats.
In the center there is an open piazza, with people selling different homemade goods. There are also shops and open air restaurants in which people can sit on the edge and watch the boats come in.
Cres is home to a Blue-Flag-status marina, that is on the outskirts of the city. This is separate from the concrete centre docks seen inside the actual city. The marina is home to ships of many people on the island and is also home to a dry dock where many ships are repaired. The Adriatic Sea is great for fishing and this port is important to the industry.

Coming from Slovenia, I managed to hitch a ride by a German family camping somewhere on the Istrian coast. They referred me to a small town called Bale where I spend an hour walking around before I hitched another ride to the beautiful coastal town of Rovinj.
The beautiful city center juts out into the sea with colorful and narrow walkways. It was a place I only heard of the night before, so I couldn't pass off a visit en route to Pula. From here I caught a bus to the sea port of Pula. My hostel was a unique dormitory inside an RV right on the water. Fortunately for me, I was the only one staying here.
Pula has a small city center with a historic Roman temple, cafes, and old clock tower. But what stood out the most and what blew me away was it's very own Roman colosseum. The structure is well intact and far less touristy than the one in Rome.
Next city is the major port city of Rijeka where I spend some time walking the waterfront and up to the historic fortress. With a cheap Airbnb, I was able to spread out and enjoy living like a local. My main reason for coming to Rijeka was to hike in the nearby mountains, atop a mountain I saw in images at my former work desk. At first I was going to settle for a short hike, but my curiosity and motivation brought me all the way to the top. In five hours, I was overlooking the Rijeka harbor and beyond with an insane view. The cool part was that I was the only person on the mountain. :)
My last stop in this video is the world famous Plitvice Lakes, Croatia's largest national park. Founded in the 40's it's a massive park of dozens of waterfalls. To me it looked like a mini Iguazu falls with water flowing through tree roots and weeds. Although there were many tourists, it was a beauty I couldn't pass off.
I was blessed to figure out a travel path that would include the northernmost section of the Croatian coast in Istria. As I continue south, the beauty intensifies more and more. I love Croatia. :)

Dubrovnik (Croatia) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Dubrovnik in Croatia.
Within the southernmost archipelago of Dalmatia is one of the most fascinating harbour cities of the young republic of Croatia, Dubrovnik, a breathtaking Mediterranean city with a great history. The city of stone had its heyday in the Middle Ages and was one of the most important economic and cultural centres in the Mediterranean. An ancient courtyard gate leads to the Old Town and to Luža Square, the city’s main square that contains a fine clock tower and splendid palace Loggia. The sixteenth century Sponza Palace consists of a combination of designs, including both Gothic and Renaissance, and once contained the Customs House and Mint. Despite much foreign rule, the city largely succeeded in being autonomous. Velika Gospa Cathedral was built between 1672 and 1713 on the ruins of a Romanesque basilica. According to legend, Richard The Lionheart was shipwrecked in the city on his return from the Third Crusade and his financial donation made it possible to build the city’s first church. From the thirteenth century the city was fortified with powerful walls that now rank among the largest, and also the most beautiful, in the whole of Europe. Dubrovnik is, amazingly, still a storybook city with all the flair of the Middle Ages. A treasure trove of history and undisputed Pearl Of The Adriatic.
