Ferrovia Circumetnea Sicily Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Ferrovia Circumetnea Sicilia in Italy.
Catania is the end of the line for a small railroad that encircles Mount Etna, the Ferrovia Circumetnea. In the heart of Catania various remnants that date back to Roman times indicate the glorious past of the second largest city in Sicily although its origins are far older. The journey around Mount Etna begins in the small and unspectacular station of the privately owned Ferrovia Circumetnea narrow gauge railway. The railroad once travelled to Catania’s harbour and today the line ends in the middle of the city. However, the simplicity of this railroad belies the fact that a journey along it is an absolute must! A couple of kilometres outside Catania there are vast fertile fields. In the background is the mighty and over three thousand metre high Mount Etna, one of the most active and famous volcanoes in the world. The history of the railroad around Mount Etna began at the end of the nineteenth century when it was important that Sicily’s remote cities had ready access to the seaport of Catania.. The journey on the Ferrovia Circumetnea travels through some exceptionally beautiful scenery that contains a number of picturesque farms. The land owes its fertility to Mount Etna as, despite its destructive force, the fertile volcanic ground is ideal for agriculture. Large quantities of carbon dioxide are constantly emitted from Etna’s crater. However, the crater’s white smoke is normally quite harmless. Even though the volcano is active throughout the year eruptions are still relatively rare and the last large eruption was in 2002. Just like a good wine a ride on the Ferrovia Circumetnea improves with age. This must be the most atmospheric way in which to discover the remarkable Mount Etna!

Ferrovia Circumetnea: Why Sicily Built A Railway Up An Active Volcano ????
The Ferrovia Circumetnea is a very quaint, 120-year-old narrow-gauge railway with an unusual selling point: it goes up an active volcano. The biggest active volcano in Europe, in fact - the mighty Mount Etna. I went to Sicily to find out more...

Rail Journey – Ferrovia Circumetnea
The first part of a rail journey between Riposto and Randazzo on Ferrovia Circumetnea, a narrow-gauge railway around Mount Etna in Sicily. This old railway line (late 19th C) connects Riposto to Catania in the most roundabout way possible.

Volcano Train Ride // Vlog
During our time in Catania, Sicily, we decided to take the Circumetnea train ride. This is a ride on a track that goes most of the way around the tallest active volcano in Europe; Mt. Etna. Since we were visiting in the end of January, the mountain was covered in snow, so we didn't want to risk taking an excursion up if they were even available. This was a great, relaxing and affordable way to experience the views around the volcano.

Rome to Sicily by train
The Trenitalia service from Rome to Sicily is unusual in that the carriages travel on the ferry across the Strait of Messina. This short video shows the train maneuvering on and off the ferry.

Ferrovia Circumetnea - Railway around the Etna - Bahn - Italy
The Ferrovia Circumetnea (roughly translated as Railway around the Etna) is a 950 mm (3 ft 1 in) gauge narrow-gauge regional railway line in Sicily. It was constructed from 1889 to 1895.

(110 km in ab. 4 hours with 8 stops ), from hight of 30 mt (Catania - Borgo) to max.840 mt (Randazzo) with the end station - Riposto.
I make the stop at Randazzo city ( it may be more) to visite the city built of lava

The other day it was the trip by bus AST from Catania (8:15) to Refuggio Sapienza (1910 mt) - going back at 16:30.
In the meantime it was the walking to the craters like Silvestro'' (1980 mt) and by cable care to 2520 mt (Montagnola) to step up to the crater ''Capanine''- from 2001 eruption.
There is also possible to go by Jeep bus to the area ''Torre del Filosofo'' (2920 mt ) but it is not aloud to go farther without the guide.
Mount Etna is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and is in an almost constant state of activity.
Etna's longest eruption began in 1979 and went on for thirteen years; its latest eruption began in March 2007, and is still ongoing.
Since 2000, Etna has had four flank eruptions — in 2001, 2002–2003, 2004–2005, and 2008-2009. Summit eruptions occurred in 2006, 2007–2008, January–April 2012, and again in July–October 2012.
