Rome: Back-Street Riches
Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide | In this third of three shows on the Eternal City, we'll explore this grand metropolis — so rich in art and culture — on a more intimate scale, delving into its back lanes and unheralded corners. Venturing through the crusty Trastevere district, visiting the historic Jewish Ghetto, and enjoying art treasures in a string of rarely visited churches, we uncover charms of hidden Rome that compete with its marquee sights.

Trastevere, Roma - Italy 4K Travel Channel
Trastevere, the name means beyond the Tiber and describes the location of the district on the west bank of the Tiber. Narrow winding streets and hardly any traffic are the typical features of these quarters that make it particularly attractive for tourists. Archways, blind alleys, residential buildings full of corners form pretty photo motives, of which there are countless.
The high density of churches points out that it has always been this is a densely populated residential area.
We reach Trastevere across the Pons Fabricius, the Tiber Island and the Pons Cestius. There we keep to the left and through picturesque lanes we arrive at
Saint Cecilia, the patroness of musicians, died a martyr's death here. First one tried to scald her, as it miscarries, she was beheaded. Later one built this church where she was buried.
Passing the Ministero della Pubblica Istruzione (Ministry of Education), we reachSanta Maria in Trastevere and the piazza of the same name. The square forms the real center of Trastevere. Musicians, painters and sellers gather here on the restaurant-lined square which inevitably attracts the tourists.
But not only here, also in the surrounding streets you find restaurants, bars and Osterias.
Passing the Porta Septimiana we walk to Fontanone di Ponte Sisto in Piazza Trilussa. We leave Trastevere and return in the evening with Dario Andreucci, who works as a tour guide for Mind the Guide.
He sees that the church San Benedetto in Piscinula is currently open and leads us in. The church was built in the 11th century on the foundations of the dwelling house of St. Benedict. Benedict lived in the 6th century BC. In the back part of the church archaeologists came across the cell in which he lived.
The medieval church gives a good impression of the former construction, when the first three-aisles basilicas were built. The church floor is adorned with beautiful Cosmati (marble decorations). On the way to Piazza Santa Maria, he draws our attention to the Convento Dei SS. Quaranta.
We watch the hustle and bustle on the Piazza Santa Maria for a while before make our way to the hotel, where we pass the Bar San Calisto, a meeting place for writers and intellectuals.

Santa Cecilia in Trastevere
Santa Maria in Trastevere

Travel Rome, Italy - Tour Trastevere in Rome
Take a tour of Trastevere in Rome, Italy -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
If Julius Caesar built his vacation villa there, you can bet that it's a worthy location for anyone traveling through Rome.
Trastevere, meaning across the Tiber, sits equidistant from the Colosseum in Rome and Vatican City.
Narrow cobblestone streets and medieval architecture gives the neighborhood its quaint, colorful character.
When Trastevere was first captured by the Romans, it was not developed or considered a part of the city proper.
Thus, this part of Rome became a melting pot of different immigrant cultures, such as Syrians and Jews.
Today, Trastevere still attracts many tourists, ex-pats, artists and celebrities, looking for the quieter side of Rome.
Trastevere is a popular night spot, with locals and tourists alike filling the streets in search of good times and beautiful architecture.

Trastevere - Rome
Spend a few minutes with us as we spend an afternoon in Trastevere. It’s a short walk across the Ponte Sisto which is close to Campo dei Fiori. The vibe is much more relaxed than most places in Rome, with less tourists and a more local vibe. History and good food are all around you without the crowds.
Visit Saint Cecilias church and make sure to ring the door bell on the sacristy to gain access to the 12th century fresco e that can only been seen in the nuns cloister. From there take a walk in towards Piazza Di Santa Maria and grab some pizza or an arancino from the forno nearby. Sit on the steps and watch the world go by. We then spent some time in the Basilica of Santa Maria. There has been a church on this same site since t 3rd century AD. The present church from memory has been there since the 1100’s.
In Trastevere there are also some nice gardens and frescoes by Raphael, although we didn’t get the chance to visit them. Hope you enjoy our video.
