Michigan Trip including Grand Haven and Owasippe cabin + Washington Park Zoo 05/17/19-05/19/19
In early June of 2018 my fiance and I went to a fundraiser for her cousin's newborn and her sister had won a free stay at a family cabin at the Owasippe Scout reservation in Twin Lake, MI which isn't far from Muskegon and Whitehall. We left on a Friday stopping at the Welcome Center at the Indiana/Michigan state line and Grand Haven. In Grand Haven we stopped to see the Pere Marquette 1223 (sister to 1225), the Lighthouse on Lake Michigan (very windy), and the Tri Cities Historical Museum. After that was our weekend stay at the Owasippe Scout Reservation which has cabins that are rented out, we stayed in the family cabin with my fiances family. A hike and kayak trip are featured. After leaving Sunday morning to come home we stopped in Michigan City at the Washington Park Zoo for my fiances birthday and a walk out to the lighthouse. Enjoy and don't forget to comment and subscribe!!

The Pere Marquette 1225 is a 2-8-4 (Berkshire) steam locomotive built for Pere Marquette Railway (PM) by Lima Locomotive Works in Lima, Ohio. 1225 is one of two surviving Pere Marquette 2-8-4 locomotives, the other being 1223 which is on display at the Tri-Cities Historical Society near ex-GTW coaling tower, in Grand Haven, MI. 1225's blueprints, saved from oblivion and donated to the MSURRC by Hank Truer, were the prototype for the locomotive image, and its sounds were used in the 2004 film The Polar Express. The film was based on the Caldecott Medal winning book of the same name. The children's book was written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg, who grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and as a child attended every home football game at Michigan State, next to which this engine was on static display.

A review of Snow Lake Kampground near Ionia, Michigan.
This is a short review of a nice private campground in Central Lower Michigan, just off M-66 about 10 miles north of Ionia. About half of the sites are seasonal, but there are open sites as well. The campground offers many amenities, including a resturant, camp store, church, boat rentals, pool, hot tub, and sauna. There are many activities for children here.
This is a nice weekend get-away as it is only an hour or so drive from most of the large population areas in Michigan.
Pere Marquette - 4K
Pere Marquette 1225 is a 2-8-4 (Berkshire) steam locomotive built for Pere Marquette Railway (PM) by Lima Locomotive Works in Lima, Ohio. 1225 is one of two surviving Pere Marquette 2-8-4 locomotives, the other being 1223 which is on display at the Tri-Cities Historical Society near ex-GTW coaling tower, in Grand Haven, MI. Nickel Plate 765 (operated by the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society, Inc) is also a Lima built Berkshire very similar in appearance and specifications to the Pere Marquette engines.
The Pere Marquette Railroad used 1225 in regular service from the locomotive's construction in 1941 until the railroad merged into Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O) in 1947; it remained in use on C&O's Michigan lines until 1951. Slated for scrapping, 1225 was acquired by Michigan State University in 1957 and placed on static display.
In 1971, work began to restore 1225 to operational status, an effort that culminated in its first excursion run in 1988. The locomotive, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is now used on excursion trains over the former Tuscola and Saginaw Bay Railway, now Great Lakes Central Railroad.

One of America's Most Notorious Militias
We interviewed the founder of the notorious Michigan Militia to find out about its ties with Timothy McVeigh, the Oklahoma City bombing and more.
Check out more VICE documentaries here:
Norman Olson is the founder of the Michigan Militia, the most famous/notorious/we-think-maybe-oldest? group of the early-90s citizens' militia movement. If you're too young to remember, that was this thing where guys in camouflage got together to train with their guns and guys with cameras pretended they were scary and racist. The movement hit a speed bump when it got blamed for the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995, and Norm Olson didn't do much good for his own group when he tried to pass the blame to the Japanese—an idea which, if you subscribe to certain theories concerning the earlier sarin-gas attack on the Tokyo subway and the responsible doomsday cult's alleged connections to the Japanese Imperial Family, makes a limited sort of sense, but otherwise sounds like the craziest of all possible answers. With faith already shaken in his leadership, Norm then hitched the Militia's wagon to fears over that Y2K thing and by February 2000 the group was essentially defunct. However, as you may have heard from the Southern Poverty Law Center or one of the hundreds of press outlets who reprinted their press release as a story, right-wing militia activity is back on the upswing. And never one to look a media jizz-rush in the mouth, Norm and his old compatriot Ray Southwell are using the momentum to try and get a new militia started on Alaska's Kenai peninsula. So far it's been going kind of rough, but that didn't stop Norm and Ray from inviting us in for coffee and a quick flip through his big, yarn-bound book of Militia Mem'ries. Come join us, as we televize the nostalgialution...

Memorial service remembers the Escanaba 75 years after its sinking
It’s been 75 years since the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Escanaba sank on June 13, 1943, in the Atlantic Ocean during World War II, but the spirit of those who served aboard the ship continues to live on.
The Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival committee paid tribute to the ship’s crew during a memorial ceremony Wednesday, June 13, 2018, at Escanaba Park. The event honored the 103 men who died when the ship sank, as well as the two survivors who’ve since died.
The service featured a roll call and bell toll for all 105 men who served aboard the ship, as well as a rifle salute and the playing of “Taps,” and proclamations from Tri-Cities communities and the state of Michigan paying tribute to the Escanaba. A new brick memorial in front of the Escanaba mast and life raft was also revealed and feature the names of those who served aboard the ship when it sank.
