Amsterdam sex workers angry at red light tour ban
(2 Apr 2019) The city of Amsterdam's latest attempt to rein in the nuisance of over-tourism - banning guided tours of the red light district - has run into opposition from some of the people it is intended to protect - sex workers.
The Dutch capital plans to ban such tours, saying they are disrespectful and contribute to congestion in the narrow, canal-side streets where sex workers sit behind windows to attract customers.
The first step in the new policy was taken on Monday night in the red light district, with tours banned from 7pm (18:00 GMT).
On a recent Friday night, the problem was clear to see – tourists bathed in a red glow emanating from the windows and peep shows' neon lights were packed shoulder to shoulder as they shuffled through the alleys.
But sex workers' union Proud questions whether banning tours will reduce tourist numbers and argues that guides educate visitors and encourage them to behave more respectfully towards the women.
It could also be that now there are no guides that people just wander into the area themselves and gawk at the women behind the window and take photos because there is no one anymore to inform them how to behave or what the rules of the game are in this area, said a sex worker who goes by the name of Velvet and is the advocacy coordinator for Proud.
Amsterdam's Prostitution Information Centre, which is housed in the same building as Proud, offers its own red light district tours.
The total ban on guided tours, which is planned to come into full force on January 1 next year, is another step in the city's campaign to reduce the problems associated with over-tourism and part of a broader package of measures reining in tours in the city.
Bobien van Aalst of the Dutch tour guide association Guidor slammed the ban on tours, not just to the red light district, but to other historic parts of the city.
Van Aalst said it meant guides will not be able to explain to tourists where Rembrandt van Rijn painted one of his first famous works or where the painter's wife is buried.
I mean it's like in Paris if you're forbidding (tours) to go to the Arc de Triomphe or the Eiffel Tower, she said.
City Hall said more than 1,000 tour groups per week now operate around the Old Church Square in the heart of the Red Light District.
There's really over-tourism there - too crowded. I mean there were evenings where ... residents basically couldn't leave their homes anymore because the alleys were blocked, the city's deputy mayor, Udo Kock told the Associated Press.
People who work in Amsterdam's sex industry question whether there are more tourists, or whether similar numbers are squeezing into a red light district that has shrunk in recent years as hundreds of the sex workers' windows have been shuttered in an attempt to diversify the narrow streets.
Kock acknowledged that not everybody was happy, but said many others were pleased the city was tackling the tours.
The red light district is a tourist magnet, especially after dark, with crowds of people waiting to get into sex shows and visiting the Red Light Secrets Museum of Prostitution, where you can experience the windows from a sex worker's perspective by sitting on a stool in front of a window onto which images are projected of men walking past and peering in.
The museum's manager, Natascha Flipsen, agreed guided tours help educate the visitors not just about the history of the centuries-old red light district, but also about how to treat the women who work there with respect.

Amsterdam is a fascinating European city with it's romantic canals, age old architecture, the Anne Frank House, several world renowned museums housing works by masters like Van Gogh and Rembrandt, the creepy Amsterdam Dungeon attraction, great restaurants, and awesome shopping. There are so many cool things to do in Amsterdam.
Over the last 10 years, a lot has been done to control and regulate the prostitution industry in Amsterdam. Prostitutes and brothel owners must now apply for a license, and all woman or men, I guess, working as prostitutes must be over 21 and legal residents of the Netherlands, which has significantly cut down on the amount of human trafficking. Police carry out regular checks throughout the industry to make sure everything is on the up and up.
The most common type of prostitution that tourists come in contact with are the window women in the red light district. These women either work for an agency, or rent out the window space and small rooms attached to... peddle their wares, so to say. They get really unhappy if you take pictures of them at work, which is why I chose to photograph empty windows. They're all over the red light district, on main streets, side streets, and right next to churches, and it all seems totally normal somehow. If approached by a potential customer, they open their door to discuss the price for the desired services, and if both parties can reach an agreement, they retire to the small room in the back, and get it on. I have no idea what anything costs, but I have heard horror stories about people getting ripped off by woman who suddenly raise the price in the middle of the session and threaten to stop immediately if the customer is not willing to pay. It doesn't always go that way, though, and as a matter of fact, I know one guy who met his future wife while paying her for sex in the Amsterdam red light district.
Now let's talk about drugs. Marijuana is considered a soft drug in the Netherlands, and there are some complicated loopholes in the national legislation that make buying, selling, and consuming small amounts basically legal. It's kind of like the laws about fireworks in the USA. Everything else is illegal and punishable by law, including very recently magic mushrooms. Anyways, the only legal place to buy marijuana is in one of the hundreds of coffee shops, which is technically the only place you are allowed to publicly smoke it, too. You must be over 18 to enter a coffee shop, and then just ask for the menu. You can buy it by the bag, a pre-rolled joint, or a so called space cake, which you should be really f*cking careful with. I once wasted the better part of an afternoon chaperoning a friend who ate an entire space cake on an empty stomach. The things he went through were not pretty, so if you're going to try a space cake, just eat a tiny little bit of it and then wait several hours to see what happens, or you might end up drooling and peeing your pants and ruining everyone else's day. There are plenty of very happy and relaxed workers in the coffee shops to answer any questions, or, as weird as it sounds, to help you get stoned, but feel free to private message me at Youtube or on Facebook if you need any more advice or think I may have gotten some facts mixed up.

Jumbo proclaimed safest store in the Netherlands thanks to face matching
“Thanks to the Panasonic face matching server Jumbo has been proclaimed the safest store in the Netherlands“
The Dutch supermarket chain Jumbo strives to provide an enjoyable and safe shopping experience for both, customers as well as their own employees. The shop has 80 high-quality cameras with facial recognition installed in their premises. If a customer is caught or arrested for shoplifting, they ensure that the image of that person remains in the database.
The moment that customer attempts to re enter the store, an internal alarm is triggered, and the security manager can take the best suitable action.
In general, investing in security systems and a safe environment helped Jumbo to provide comfort and confidence to both, their customers as well as their employees.

Best Plant Shops in the Netherlands — Plant One On Me — Ep 066
Earlier this year I headed to the Netherlands and managed to go to a few of the main cities there to check out the plant scene. After doing a “Best Plant Shops in Williamsburg, Brooklyn” episode (see Ep 037 here: I figured I’d put together a “Best Plant Shops in the Netherlands” (even though I could have admittedly gone city-by-city there and done an episode in each town). Time, however, was not on my side and there was much to see and do!
I should say that I bought a bunch of plants from the Netherlands and now I’m just waiting on the exporter to export them. I don’t know why he’s slow on the trigger, but I’m about to put in another call to remind him to send my verdant treasure! (Luckily I have someone taking care of the plants until that time). Just FYI: It’s challenging to bring plants back from other countries, because you need an import permit and phytosanitary certificates, and time and patience, so brace yourself! (I smell a new episode brewing perhaps!!) I suppose, however, if you want to play it safe, you may only want to purchase planters and other gardening accessories when visiting other countries.
You can check out the shops featured in the video here:

Amsterdam City (history of)
(Video is taken at the Historisch Museum of Amsterdam)
History of Amsterdam
Amsterdam, the greatest planned city of northern Europe, has always been a well-known name in world history and played a central role in the history of the Netherlands. In the 17th century Amsterdam was the centre of world economy, and nowadays the city is known for its tolerant character.
1200-1585: The Early History
Amsterdam was founded as a fishing village around the thirteenth century. Amsterdam developed round a dam in the Amstel river at the end of the 12th century. The name Amstelledamme occurs for the first time in the toll concession of Floris V, Count of Holland, dated October 27, 1275. During the 14th, but especially the 15th century, Amsterdam underwent a rapid development, which laid the foundation for the Golden Age. Only very few medieval buildings survive today. Some examples: the Old and New Churches and the Houten Huis (Wooden House) at the Begijnhof. Throughout the Middle Ages houses were generally built of wood, a vulnerable type of construction material. The famous Houten Huis is no exception to this rule. Consequently, most of them were destroyed. Nevertheless, a surprisingly large number of Amsterdam dwellings still have timber frames.
1585-1672: The Golden Age of Amsterdam
The period 1585-1672, the Golden Age, was the hey-day of Amsterdam's commercial success. At the time Amsterdam was the staple market of the world. During this period the characteristic Amsterdam cityscape developed; the 1613 and 1663 urban expansions still determine the city's characteristic appearance. Some of the most important historic buildings date back to this period, e.g. the town hall in the Dam Square (now the Royal Palace), the Westerkerk, Zuiderkerk, as well as a large number of canal houses among which De Dolfijn (Dolphin), De Gecroonde Raep (Crowned Turnip), the Bartolotti Huis, the Huis met de Hoofden (House with the Heads), the Poppenhuis, Kloveniersburgwal 95 (commissioned by the Poppen family), the Trippenhuis (built for the Trip family), the Van Raey-huizen, Keizersgracht 672-674, and Sweedenrijk, Herengracht 462.
1672-1795: An Age of Gold and Silver
The year 1672 was a year of disaster for the Dutch Republic with the French and English attacking simultaneously. The Golden Age had come to an end. Nevertheless, Amsterdam managed to consolidate its prosperity during the period 1672-1795 in spite of the predicament the Republic found itself in. The city remained a major staple market and managed to retain its position as the financial centre of Europe. Whereas the Golden Age was primarily a period of pitch and tar, the new era is better characterised as an age of gold and silver. The large number of dwellings built at this time, both simple ones and rich canal houses, reflect the city's prosperity. As a result the majority of the houses located in the city centre date back to the 18th rather than the 17th century. Some examples: Huis Van Brienen, Herengracht 284, Huis De Vicq-De Steur, OZ Voorburgwal 237, Zeevrugt and Saxenburg, Keizersgracht 224.
1795-1813: Recession and Decline
In 1795 the government of the patrician oligarchies was overthrown and the old Republic ceased to exist. Soon the French were to occupy the country. During the period 1795-1813 Amsterdam suffered badly from the economic recession, a state of affairs reflected by the stagnation of the demographic development. Many houses were vacant and some even collapsed for lack of maintenance. Fortunately some facades and interiors dating back to the Empire period survive today.
1813-1940: Recovery and Expansion beyond the Singelgracht
The period 1813-1940 is marked by economic recovery and, from 1870 onwards, by expansion. The increasing wealth brought about a rapid population growth. This development was primarily the result of the Industrial Revolution which triggered off a New Golden Age. The city now ventured into the area beyond the Singelgracht. Large poorly built working-class neighbourhoods were built. The period 1920-1940 was a time of economic recession. Therefore it is all the more remarkable that the so-called Ring 20-40 compares favourably to the 19th century jerry-building. This was also the period of large-scale damage to the historical city centre; canals were filled in and new traffic breakthroughs were realised.

iFly TV: Jan-Willem Schutte from Den Helder, Holland runs the Two Oceans Marathon in Cape Town
Run 56 kilometers in Capetown... that's what triggered Jan-Willem Schutte from Den Helder, Holland. Until early March he prepared to run the Rotterdam Marathon in April but than he received the notification being the winner of the KLM Sweepstakes Win a trip to Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon in Capetown. Rotterdam is one of the flattest races on earth, the Two Oceans Marathon with it's beautiful hills and mountainous course is the complete opposite. No challenge too big for Jan-Willem, he gladly accepted the fantastic prize and experienced it all around the Easter days in Capetown together with his wife. The prize package was enormous: next to participating in 'the world's most beautiful marathon', the free Avis rental car and the flight tickets to Capetown it included an 8 days hotel stay at the Vineyard Hotel & Spa in Newlands, the Townhouse Hotel in the City Centre and D'Ouwe Werf Hotel in Stellenbosch. The program was topped with a variety of activities: a city tour, an abseiling adventure, a walking tour, horse riding, a cultural tour, a bicycle tour, the so called soulful Jazz Tour, tickets to the Summer Sunset Concerts and the guided visit to a township by run4schools.nl.
