6. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Lidiya Kozlova, Director of the museum:
For our region it's a big event. According to the documents it was Stalin's only visit to the front. And it happened in this region. Here this museum tells about the events that happened near the city of Rzhev during the days of the Great Patriotic War (Russian term for World War Two) and about the events that happened at the Rzhevsko-Vyazemsky bridgehead where Nazis ruled for almost 14 months. And here everywhere around, as Mikhail Ivanovich Nozhkin (a Soviet actor and writer) said, great, tough and long battles were happening.

12. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Lidiya Kozlova, Director of the museum:
Each of us wants our state to be strong. And I always ask the following question: Can a strong state be ruled by a week president, a week head of the state? It can't be that way. So that the government became strong, the head of state has also to be smart, strong and sometimes even tough. Because today the current situation demands that. And in the time when Joseph Stalin ruled the country, the situation demanded this 100 times more.

21. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Sergei Zubarovsky, tour guide:
We had the gulag. We had other mistakes. People were punished. But our soldiers went into the attack. They were rising for the motherland, for Stalin. And that happened in this region. He is a kind of a flag which lead us to the victory. And he may have had mistakes, but we know them, and our pupils know about these mistakes. We tell them about them, we are not hiding them. And we also say about the glory he brought to us.

STORYLINE:
As the 137th anniversary of the birth of Josef Stalin is marked on Friday, the retelling of the former Soviet leader's triumphs have become increasingly fashionable during troubled times in Russia.
A bust of Stalin stands outside a house-turned-museum in the village of Khoroshevo, in the Tver region, where he is said to have stayed the night on his only visit to the front during World War Two.
Groups of students look around the two-room building where Stalin strategised with his generals in August 1943 as the Red Army battled to drive out the Nazi troops.

Trolley bus festival in Moscow on 83rd anniversary
(1 Oct 2016) Several thousand Moscovites gathered on the Frunzenskaya Embankment in the centre of the Russian capital on Saturday to see an exhibition of retro Russian trolley buses to mark the vehicles' 83rd anniversary.
Enjoying the unusually warm and sunny weather, people of all ages, including hundreds of children, took to the streets to see the retro models of Soviet-era street trolley buses.
The buses are already legendary in Moscow city folklore and appear in numerous Soviet films and theatrical scenes.
But the Moscow trolley bus show was more than a curiosity.
For middle-aged Moscovites, it was a nostalgic return to their youth so closely linked to a modest way of life in a time of scarcity of almost everything, including transport vehicles, which were overcrowded and lacking any semblance of comfort.
Aleksey Gontarev is a trolley bus enthusiast who brought the oldest Soviet-made trolley bus from Petersburg to Moscow for the exhibition.
Gontarev, who is setting up a trolley bus museum in St. Petesburg, said the purpose of his project was to save street cars so beloved of Russians, however old and simplistic they were in design and comfort.

Колыма - родина нашего страха / Kolyma - Birthplace of Our Fear

The patron of the Yaroslavl Eye Hospital was the famous Yaroslavl ophthalmologist Ivan Katsaurov. Katsaurov had attended upon Empress Alexandra Feodorovna and had been offered a post as Court Doctor. He declined the invitation, citing the need to treat patients in Yaroslavl.
The city authorities provided a site for the hospital, for free, on the bank of the River Volga and the provincial architect, A.A. Nikiforov was contracted to design the Russian style building.
The hospital was opened in 1903 and provided free medical care for the poor and restoring sight to dozens of patients.
The good doctor died in December 1914.
The hospital continued to operate, well after the Revolution………..

SUMMARY
=======
Moscow (; Russian: Москва́, tr. Moskvá, IPA: [mɐˈskva] (listen)) is the capital and most populous city of Russia, with 13.2 million residents within the city limits and 17 million within the urban area. Moscow is one of Russia's federal cities.
Moscow is a major political, economic, cultural, and scientific centre of Russia and Eastern Europe, as well as the largest city (both by population and by area) entirely on the European continent. By broader definitions Moscow is among the world's largest cities, being the 14th largest metro area, the 18th largest agglomeration, the 14th largest urban area, and the 11th largest by population within city limits worldwide. According to Forbes 2013, Moscow has been ranked as the ninth most expensive city in the world by Mercer and has one of the world's largest urban economies, being ranked as an alpha global city according to the Globalization and World Cities Research Network, and is also one of the fastest growing tourist destinations in the world according to the MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index.
Moscow is the northernmost and coldest megacity and metropolis on Earth. It is home to the Ostankino Tower, the tallest free standing structure in Europe; the Federation Tower, the second-tallest skyscraper in Europe; and the Moscow International Business Center. By its territorial expansion on July 1 2012 southwest into the Moscow Oblast, the area of the capital more than doubled, going from 1,091 to 2,511 square kilometers (421 to 970 sq mi), resulting in Moscow becoming the largest city on the European continent by area; it also gained an additional population of 233,000 people.Moscow is situated on the Moskva River in the Central Federal District of European Russia, making it Europe's most populated inland city. The city is well known for its architecture, particularly its historic buildings such as Saint Basil's Cathedral with its colourful architectural style. With over 40 percent of its territory covered by greenery, it is one of the greenest capitals and major cities in Europe and the world, having the largest forest in an urban area within its borders—more than any other major city—even before its expansion in 2012.
The city has served as the capital of a progression of states, from the medieval Grand Duchy of Moscow and the subsequent Tsardom of Russia to the Russian Empire to the Soviet Union and the contemporary Russian Federation.
Moscow is the seat of power of the Government of Russia, being the site of the Moscow Kremlin, a medieval city-fortress that is today the residence for work of the President of Russia. The Moscow Kremlin and Red Square are also one of several World Heritage Sites in the city. Both chambers of the Russian parliament (the State Duma and the Federation Council) also sit in the city. Moscow is considered the centre of Russian culture, having served as the home of Russian artists, scientists and sports figures and because of the presence of museums, academic and political institutions and theatres.
The city is served by a transit network, which includes four international airports, nine railway terminals, numerous trams, a monorail system and one of the deepest underground rapid transit systems in the world, the Moscow Metro, the fourth-largest in the world and largest outside Asia in terms of passenger numbers, and the busiest in Europe. It is recognised as one of the city's landmarks due to the rich architecture of its 200 stations.Moscow has acquired a number of epithets, most referring to its size and preeminent status within the nation: The Third Rome (Третий Рим), the Whitestone One (Белокаменная), the First Throne (Первопрестольная), the Forty Soroks (Сорок Сороков) (sorok meaning both forty, a great many and a district or parish in Old Russian).
Moscow is also one of the twelve Hero Cities. The demonym for a Moscow res ...

SUMMARY
=======
The Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic (Estonian SSR or ESSR; Estonian: Eesti Nõukogude Sotsialistlik Vabariik ENSV; Russian: Эстонская Советская Социалистическая Республика ЭССР, Estonskaya Sovetskaya Sotsialisticheskaya Respublika ESSR), also known as Soviet Estonia or Estonia was an unrecognized republic of the Soviet Union, administered by a subordinate of the government of the Soviet Union. The ESSR was initially established on the territory of the Republic of Estonia on July 21, 1940, following the invasion of Soviet troops on June 17, 1940, and the installation of a puppet government backed by the Soviet Union, which declared Estonia a Soviet constituency. The Estonian SSR was subsequently incorporated into the Soviet state on August 9, 1940. The territory was occupied by Nazi Germany from 1941 to 1944 and administered as a part of Reichskommissariat Ostland.
Most countries did not recognize the incorporation of Estonia de jure and only recognized its Soviet government de facto or not at all. A number of these countries continued to recognize Estonian diplomats and consuls who still functioned in the name of their former government. This policy of non-recognition gave rise to the principle of legal continuity, which held that de jure, Estonia remained an independent state under occupation throughout the period 1940–91.On 16 November 1988, the Estonian SSR became the first republic within the Soviet sphere of influence to declare state sovereignty from Moscow. On 30 March 1990, the Estonian SSR declared that Estonia had been occupied since 1940 and declared a transitional period for the country's full independence. The Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic was renamed as the Republic of Estonia on May 8, 1990. The independence of the Republic of Estonia was re-established on August 20 during the 1991 Soviet coup d'état attempt the following year and the Soviet Union itself recognized the independence of Estonia on September 6, 1991.
