Putin on Political Opponents: I like Competition!
Meeting with heads of Russian print media and news agencies
Ahead of Russian Press Day marked on January 13, Vladimir Putin met with heads of Russian print media and news agencies in the editorial office of the Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper. The discussion focused on current professional issues. The President congratulated media representatives on their professional holiday.
Vladimir Sungorkin: Mr President, thank you for coming to Komsomolskaya Pravda.
I have a question for you not as the President, but as a presidential candidate. This year, we will have, I think, a record number of those who wish to lead our dear mother Russia. What are your thoughts on the large number of potential candidates? Do they motivate you, or just the opposite? What are your feelings on going up against 15 rivals, I believe?
Vladimir Putin: I think it is normal and good. To some degree, the pre-election period always strains society, because, unfortunately, there is also a lot of “foam” bubbling up, but still it is good because it gives people a chance and a reason to speak out, to discuss how different people approach these problems.
In general, I think it’s useful. It keeps the discussion fresh and sharpens it. The main thing is to do everything according to the law, as well as certain ethical and moral values. This is the most important element; and on the whole these campaigns I have just mentioned, while they have downsides, they still benefit society. This is why I welcome it. I will be glad to see and to hear interesting, elegant and useful proposals for the country’s development.

Putin's shot of vodka & brief history of Islamic State
In the early 2000s, Vladimir Putin successfully turned the tables in the brutal wars in Chechnya. Western mainstream media would have you believe that the civil war was the Chechen people vs. the Russian government. In actuality, it was groups of radicalised Islamists, ideologically and financially supported from the West, with the intention of destabilising the state from within. Sound familiar? In effect, the Syrian campaign was far from Vladimir Putin's first rodeo...
Fact: Current pro-Moscow leader of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, was initially on the other side of the conflict - against the state. How did Vladimir Putin turn this situation around? Don't miss the linked video at the end - Putin’s historic battle against ISIL (Q&A 2002)
The US-based curators of Wahhabist radicals, such as the late Zbegniew Brzezinski, seemingly underestimated the experience of a former FSB Director.
[Wikipedia] Khodynka Field
Khodynka Field (Russian: Ходынское поле, Khodynskoye pole) is a large open space in the north-west of Moscow, at the beginning of the present day Leningradsky Prospect. It takes its name from the small Khodynka River which used to cross the neighbourhood. Major constructions on the field included the 19th century military barracks and the Botkin Hospital, the largest in Moscow at the time of its inauguration in 1910.
Khodynka was the site of the first Russian powered flight, and became a regular airfield, in use through the late 1980s. The Russian National Air & Space Museum is at Khodynka.
Khodynka field (up to 17th century khodinskiy meadow) has been known since the 14th century, the first mention of which dates back to 1389, when Knyaz Dmitry Donskoy bequeathed the Khodyinsky meadow to his son Yuri Dmitrievich.
For a long time the field was undeveloped, placed it on arable land Tver coachmen settlement. At the beginning of 17th century the army of Tsar Vasily Shumsky fought here with the troops False Dmitry II.
When Catherine the Great in 1775 at the field was held a grand festivities on the occasion of the war with Turkey, and the conclusion of the Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca.
In the 19th century, Khodynka had been used to celebrate state occasions. In June 1883 the coronation of Alexander III. The event was co-ordinated by Mikhail Lentovsky and included four theatres, a circus, puppet shows choirs and orchestras. The central point was an allegorical procession entitled Spring is Beautiful. In May 1896, the site was used for the ill-fated coronation of Tsar Nicholas II. Rumours about a shortage in food and that the coronation mugs contained a gold coin resulted in a stampede in which more than 1000 (some sources say 1500) people were trampled to death (see Khodynka Tragedy).

Putin & New World Order - 1999
An excerpt out of a 1999 interview, when Russian President Vladimir Putin was the Director of the FSB (Federal Security Service.) The subject at hand was international security and the unfolding situation in the former Yugoslavia. While many of us consider that the Iraq or Libyan wars were the turning points in the public perception of ‘the wars for freedom’, Putin pinpointed the attempt to ‘change the world order’ as early as 1999.
The illegal NATO bombing of Yugoslavia lasted from March 24, 1999 to June 10, 1999. Interestingly, the war is said to have ended on 11 June 1999, when a column of Russian armoured vehicles carrying 250 Russian troops arrived in Serbia, who were part of the international peacekeeping force in Bosnia. The column was heading for Pristina (Kosovo) International Airport ahead of the arrival of NATO troops.
Upon hearing of the deployment, American NATO Supreme Commander for Europe, General Wesley Clark, ordered a contingent of British and French paratroopers to be flown in by helicopter to seize the airport by force. While this resulted in a tense stand-off between Russia and NATO - eventually, a joint NATO-Russian peacekeeping force was to be installed in Kosovo. In this way, NATO bombardment of the former Yugoslavia finally ceased, having to work together with the Russians on a peaceful resolution.
