Lisbon Belem Tower and Monument to the Discoveries
Along the Lisbon waterfront are the two most famous monuments in Belem which stand as symbols of Portugal’s 16th century naval voyages: The Tower of Belem and the Monument to the Discoveries.
To understand the history of Portugal, we need to consider their spectacular maritime discoveries 500 years ago. Vasco da Gama was the first to sail around Africa and discover the ocean route to Asia, opening up a vast trade network that made Portugal rich. Pedro Cabral discovered Brazil in 1500, which Portugal claimed as their largest colony, and Portuguese navigators were the first to sail to China, in 1542. After the initial Portuguese discoveries other European countries joined in the hunt for colonies and the world would never be the same again. This was the beginning of the modern world and the start of global trade and communications.
The Tower of Belem, built between 1515 and 1520, is a fortress that guards the harbor and celebrates the discoveries in grand style, with its elaborate Manueline carved decorations similar to those at Jeronimos. It was built as a fortress to protect the entrance of Lisbon’s harbor and had originally been in the river as an island surrounded by water, but over time the river got narrower so the fortress is now on the shore. Another fortress used to be on the opposite side of the river to catch the enemy in a cross-fire. You can climb to upper levels for a panoramic view.

How do we afford to travel so often? We're lucky enough to stay for almost free in every city, using
Explore Lisbon's central shopping and restaurant area as if you were there, in this 4k tour.
We start at the intersection of Largo do Chiado and R.Garrett, in the district of Baixa-Chiado by the entrance to the Chiado Metro station.
We walk past two famous statues, Escultura de Fernando Pessoa and Estátua de António Ribeiro before heading down this pretty Lisbon shopping area.
Sometimes, one of the best things to do in Lisbon is to walk it's charming streets. The Bertrand Bookshop on the corner of R. Anchieta is covered in stunning blue tiles, and it leads us down to the Armazéns do Chiado shopping centre at the end of the street.
Here we turn left down R. do Carmo to see the famous Santa Justa Lift (Elevador de Santa Justa) crossing above us.
Folowing R. de Santa Justa we cross the busy R. Áurea and head down Rua dos Correiros - where we see some great restaurants and more beautiful tiled buildings.
Turning onto R. Augusta with it's intricately tiled pavement, our eye is led towards the great arch known as Arco da Rua Augusta.

Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower in Lisbon / Portugal Travel Vlog #18 / Two And A Half Travel
In this video we share our experience from the Belém Tower, Padrão dos Descobrimentos and Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon.
Portugal Lisbon Commemorating round the world Architecture belem tower , Caboda roca , Fatima
Lisbon is Portugal's largest city and capital, with the dreams and romance of the age of sailing. It has long been known as the most prosperous port city since the Phoenician, Greek and Carthage eras. It is under Roman rule in 205 B.C.E. In 704 AD, it is centered on various cultures and histories of Europe, including Islam. Its heyday has evolved into one of Europe's leading commercial cities in the 15th and 16th centuries, and in 1755, the earthquake and tsunami resulted in the painful fate of destroying two-thirds of the city. In 1994, the European Community (EC) was designated as a European cultural city. The neighboring Spain is easily connected by train, making it easy to travel with major European cities along the Atlantic coast.
Belem Tower is the most famous monument to visit with the Jeronimos Monastery in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. This white, four-storey building is located near the Tahoe River and serves as a memorial and lighthouse built in honor of the work of Vasco da Gama in the early 1500s. Vasco da Gama is the most famous navigator in Portugal, who pioneered three routes to India in 70 years. At the corner of the building there is a watchtower and the water is submerged at high tide. The first floor was used as a political prison camp until the 19th century, the second floor was used as a turret, the third floor as a watchtower and customs. It has a unique Manuel style, which was designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1983.
If you are looking for a tranquillity to relax in a noisy and somewhat busy trip to Lisbon, you should stop by Jeronimos Monastery. The atmosphere reminds of the Spanish Alhambra, but the monastery is grand and colorful, reaching 300 meters in length.
Located at the entrance of Lisbon harbor and built in 1502, it is a masterpiece entitled the most beautiful finished product of Portuguese architectural art. Inside the monastery, there are chapels and churches as well as the tombs of the Portuguese monarchs. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the Belem Tower nearby.
Lisbon's tallest area, the Alfama district, endured the 1755 earthquake and is home to Lisbon's oldest architectural castle, the castle and the cathedral, and the Portas do Sol lookout. Alleys, old-fashioned alleys, tramps, trailing hills, vintage walls adorned with azulejos, washed-off paints and all over the Alfama districts are unusual and special. It is a tourist destination. Portas do Sol lookout point in the Alfama district is the Lisbon sunset point and is always crowded with buskers.
Commerziu Square is the largest square in Lisbon, facing the Tt Pearl River and is one of Lisbon's most beloved venues due to various events and performances every day. A huge statue at the entrance of the square opens towards the Tt Pearl River, and in the center of the square is the horse statue of Don Jose I. Like the twin buildings, the Chesyong and the Naval Headquarters are facing each other and show a great architectural aesthetic.
This is where the huge land mass Eurasian continent, which occupies more than half of the earth, ends in the west. The land village of the continent is Caboboroca. The cape in the village of Hokka, in Portugal, is also called the cape Hokka. As with any land village, the tourist information centers here issue memorial certificates of visiting the western end of the continent. It is a symbol of Europe's edge, but it is located on a sheer cliff and is a popular tourist spot with spectacular scenery. It is often near the beach to shower suddenly, but on a nice day, it is a place where you can leave romantic memories in a beautiful flower field with a wide horizon.
About 100 years ago, a miracle happened in the small town of Fatima, Portugal. The Virgin Mary appeared to three young shepherd boys who played a stone wall. The Virgin Mary, who appeared with intense light, told the children about three secrets and left, after which they went on their own assaulting and praying. Rumors spread quickly, but the children did not finally tell what the secret was. Judging by the rumors to make society unsettled, the administrative chief of the Portuguese put the children in jail, and the children rehabilitated prisoners to prisoners and sang songs together. This is called the expression of the Virgin Mary and is recognized officially by the Catholics. The first day of her appearance was May 13, 1917, and on the 13th of each month for five months thereafter, she said she performed a miracle in front of her three children. On October 13, the last day, the miracle of the sun dancing was shown in front of a crowd of 70,000 people gathered to see it. To commemorate this, a cathedral was built, and numerous pilgrims visit and worship here. The miracle of the Virgin Mary in a small town, it is time to see for yourself.

00:00 - 00:17
Hey guys. I'm Maria from Travel Guide Lisbon and today I'm going to talk about the Lisboa Card. What is the Lisbon Card? What is included in the Lisbon Card? Where can you buy it? For how much and if it's worth it for you?
00:18 - 00:51
So, what is the Lisbon Card? The Lisbon Card is the official visit and travel card for Lisbon. It's not only museums and attraction pass, but also a travel card, transportation card within Lisbon, which give you unlimited free public transportation within Lisbon.
Not only that, it also gives you free train rides to Sintra and Cascais. Also, 25% discount on the Aerobus, which is a bus service between the airport and the city and then 25% off on the citysightseeing hop-on hop-off passes.
00:51 - 01:05
As for the museums and attractions pass, it is a discount card, which gives you free and discounted entrances on the main attractions in Lisbon and nearby towns such as in Central.
01:05 - 01:29
So, some examples of the free attractions included in the Lisbon Card are the iconic Belem Tower in Lisbon or the most famous Jeronimos Monastery. The famous Tram 28. The Elevador de Santa Justa, which was designed by Eiffel or numerous museums such as the National Museum of Azulejos.
01:30 - 02:04
For discounted prices, discounted and trip prices. For example, the Oceanarium of Lisbon. The Gulbenkian Museum. The Fado Museum and the most known world heritage sites in Sintra such as the famous Pena Palace, the Quinta da Regaleira and the Park of Monserrate, they are all included in the Lisbon Card. I have written a longer list for you on our website, Travel Guide Lisbon at the Lisbon Card. You can read there more about that.
02:05 - 02:48
So, where can you buy your Lisbon Card? You can either buy it online on our website or on the spot in Lisbon in a ticket office. I have written you a list as well on the website in which ticket offices you can buy it. Where are the ticket offices, but for example there is one straight away at the airport that at the arrival hall or on one of the main squares of Lisbon, the Praca do Comercio in the Lisbon Welcome Center. If you choose to buy your ticket online, you will receive an email with a voucher and you will have to take this voucher with you along with your passport or ID to a ticket office where you will redeem your Lisbon Card and you will also receive a small tour guide and a city map together with it.
02:49 - 03:11
So, your options are, you can buy a 24 hours, a 48 hours or a 72 hours Lisbon Card. The 24 hours Lisbon Card cost 19 Euros for an adult. The two-day pass cost 32 Euros and the three-days pass cost 40 Euros for an adult. It's free for children under the age of four.
03:12 - 03:35
Is the Lisbon Card worth it? Absolutely yes. If you manage to visit two or three attractions at least a day, then your Lisbon Card has already paid for itself. Even in the summer when in high season when you can count with longer waiting times in queues, even then, it's doable. I would absolutely recommend the Lisbon Card.
03:36 - 03:57
For example, if you spend two days in Lisbon, you can buy the 48 hours pass, but if you want to take it easy, you can only buy the 24 hours pass, and the next day, take it easy and just walk around the streets of Lisbon, you know? You don't have to be running around museums and monuments all the time you are there. You can just choose to buy a one-day pass, and one day, take it easy.
03:58 - 04:14
But you can also buy the two-days pass, and the first day, visit all the attractions in Lisbon, and the second day, you can spend the day, for example, in Sintra. Spend your day there. The Lisbon Card is perfect for that as well because, don't forget, it includes a free train ride to Sintra and back.
04:15 - 04:23
I hope you enjoyed this video. Don't forget to subscribe to our channel. Have a nice day. Bye bye.

LISBON - A DAY IN BELÈM: The Belém Tower & Pastéis de Belém | Lisbon Vlog | Kathryn Tamblyn
Here's Part 2 of our Lisbon trip: A Day in Belém! Tom and I start by sampling the world famous Pastéis de Belém and they lived up to the hype as the very best pastéis or pastel de natas. We tour the Jardim de Belém and then walk to the beautiful Belém Tower and the stunning, Ponte 25 de Abril. While wandering around the lovely streets of Belém, we stop at Santini's Gelato for the best gelato in Lisbon. I highly recommend trying their coconut flavor. It was the perfect day in Belém, even though we have a few hiccups with visiting some of the locations.
Thanks for coming along! I hope you enjoy the vlog :)
