Saint George's Castle, Lisbon, May 2017
Saint George's Castle can be seen from almost everywhere in the city. Its oldest parts date from the 6th century, when it was fortified by the Romans, Visigoths, and eventually the Moors. It served as a Moorish royal residence until Portugal's first king Afonso Henriques captured it in 1147 with the help of northern European crusaders on their way to the Holy Land. It was then dedicated to St. George, the patron saint of England, commemorating the Anglo-Portuguese pact dating from 1371, and became the royal palace until another one (that was destroyed in the Great Earthquake) was built in today's Comercio Square.
It is now an oasis of peace, but just past the main gate is a statue of King Afonso Henriques and a series of cannons, reminders of the castle's original purpose. What remains of the Alcaçovas Palace where medieval kings lived, is a stone building now housing a restaurant, and round the back, a small archaeological museum in three underground chambers (including the one where Vasco da Gama was once received by King Manuel).
Most of the castle was destroyed over the years, especially in the Great Earthquake of 1755, but still includes a long extension of walls and 18 towers. Visitors can climb the towers and walk along the ramparts for the most breathtaking views of Lisbon (which confirm it as one of the most beautiful cities in the world), or relax in the gardens where peacocks, geese and ducks strut around. One of the castle's inner towers, the Tower of Ulysses, holds the Câmara Escura, a periscope that projects sights from around the city.

Lisbon view from the castle
The Castle of São Jorge (Portuguese: Castelo de São Jorge) is a Moorish castle occupying a commanding hilltop overlooking the historic centre of the Portuguese city of Lisbon and Tagus River. The strongly fortified citadel dates from medieval period of Portuguese history, and is one of the main tourist sites of Lisbon.
Zamek św. Jerzego w Lizbonie (port. Castelo de São Jorge) położony jest w jednej z najstarszych części miasta i góruje nad nim. Został zbudowany przez Maurów w XII wieku na fundamentach poprzedniej budowli i służył jako twierdza. Chrześcijańscy królowie Portugalii rozbudowali go do dzisiejszych rozmiarów.

Castelo de Sao Jorge
Castelo de São Jorge
Lisbon's historic medieval castle is perched atop the highest of Lisbon's seven hills in the Alfama district of the capital with great views of the city below.
A fortress has existed on the site since the second century BCE. The perimeters of the present castle were set out by the Moors. Legend has it that the castle was taken from the Moors in 1147, when a certain Martim Moniz threw his body in front of an open door, to allow the invading Portuguese and Crusader army to storm the fortress.
The castle served as the royal palace - the Alcaçovas Palace - during the medieval period and was dedicated to São Jorge (Saint George) in the late 14th century by King João I.
The castle gradually lost its importance as the royal palace moved elsewhere and the buildings suffered damage in the Lisbon Earthquake of 1755.
The castle now consists of a series of open courtyards within the perimeter walls. The Olisipónia, within the castle grounds, is all that now remains of the palace and has displays on the history of Lisbon. A câmera escura (camera obscura) in the old Tower of Ulysses (once the Royal Treasury) offers 360 degree views of the city projected from a periscope. There is a castle shop and cafe and a separate gallery housed in the old prison (where once the cobble stones of Lisbon were produced by the unfortunate prisoners). The gallery hosts exhibitions on the history and culture of Lisbon.
