Hudson Yards is a real estate development in the Chelsea and Hudson Yards neighborhoods of Manhattan, New York City. It is the largest private real estate development in the United States by square footage. Upon completion, 13 of the 16 planned structures on the West Side of Midtown South would sit on a platform built over the West Side Yard, a storage yard for Long Island Rail Road trains. The first of its two phases, opened in 2019, comprises a public green space and eight structures that contain residences, a hotel, office buildings, a mall, and a cultural facility. The second phase, on which construction has not started yet, will include residential space, an office building, and a school.
The site of Hudson Yards was initially intended for other developments, most notably in the early 2000s as the site of the West Side Stadium, during the New York City bid for the 2012 Summer Olympics. The plans for Hudson Yards were developed after the failure of the West Side Stadium. Construction began in 2012 with the groundbreaking for 10 Hudson Yards, and the first phase opened on March 15, 2019. Both phases are projected to be complete by 2024. Agreements between various entities including the local government, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), and the state of New York made the development possible.
10 Hudson Yards
Number 10 was the first of the six skyscrapers to complete on the site in 2016, providing office space for companies including Coach, L'Oréal, Boston Consulting Group, and SAP in a building designed by Hudson Yards masterplanner Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF).
Located at the southeastern corner of the site, the tower greets the High Line as the park bends around towards the river. A series of shifts in the building's floor plates were created during the design phase to accommodate specific requirements from different tenants.
The Shops and Restaurants at Hudson Yards
Sat between and connecting KPF's two towers is the site's vast retail provision, housed within a comparatively low volume that includes seven floors of shops and restaurants, connected by concourses and atriums designed by Elkus Manfredi Architects.
A flagship three-storey Neiman Marcus department store anchors the offering of luxury brands, high-street chains, and variety of 25 food and beverage options. The Snark Park exhibition space by Snarkitecture is also intended to draw in visitors.
The building presents a simple flat facade to 10th Avenue, but offers much more glass towards the public plaza at the heart of Hudson Yards. Its faceted roof was given extra attention as it can be seen clearly from the surrounding towers.
15 Hudson Yards
Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R) and Rockwell Group's 910-foot-tall (277-metre) 15 Hudson Yards was the development's first residential tower to complete, in January 2019.
Starting with a rectangular plan, the 88-storey building gently tapers into four curved portions towards its peak. The curtain-wall glazing appears frameless, reflecting the sky and surrounding towers.
Amenity spaces that accompany the 200-plus apartments are located on the 50th and 51st floors, and include an indoor swimming pool, a gym, spa, movie theatre, private dining room, lounge and other communal areas.
The Shed
This expandable arts venue will bring flexible gallery, performance and events spaces to the neighbourhood when it opens 5 April 2019.
The project was conceived and designed by lead architect DS+R in collaboration with Rockwell Group, which used the base of their skyscraper as a nesting point for the cultural complex's service areas.
The Shed's architectural ingenuity revolves around its ETFE-covered moving roof, which can be deployed or retracted on its giant rollers in just five minutes, enabling the plaza in front to be become a covered concert arena or giant exhibition space.
35 Hudson Yards
SOM and architect David Childs' contribution to Hudson Yards is this 92-storey skyscraper that will accommodate 143 condos, and the first hotel from fitness brand Equinox – including 200 rooms, and a club and spa.
The tallest residential tower on the site is clad with vertical limestone fins, which accentuate the various setbacks in its form, and curve near the base to mark the entrances. Construction work is almost complete, and residents are due to begin occupancy later in 2019.

Proclaimed the centrepiece of Hudson Yards, Heatherwick Studio's Escher-like sculpture comprises 154 staircases linked by 80 landings – forming a honeycomb lattice wrapped in copper-coloured cladding.

NYC and LA are the two largest cities in the United States. New York has the most people, with a population of 8.5 million, while LA has around 4 million people. The New York metropolitan area, however, has 20.3 million people. So about 1 in 16 Americans live there. The Los Angeles metropolitan area has about 13.1 million people.
Both are cosmopolitan, world famous cities. Two cities that never seem to sleep- always hustling and bustling. Over the last century, the two cities have dominated and influenced the culture of the rest of the country. It’s like the two forget the fact that the rest of us exist. You see this on mainstream TV. Most national news and entertainment programming occurs in LA or New York, although LA has way more YouTubers than New York.
Both are by oceans. NYC by the Atlantic Ocean, and LA by the Pacific.
Both are diverse. We’re talking people flock from all over the world to these two cities to start new lives. More than 37% of New York residents were born in another country. Nearly 40% of LA residents were born in another country. Almost half of the residents of LA are considered either Hispanic or Latino. New York has historically been the main way immigrants come to the United States. In both LA and New York, you’ll see lots of ethnic enclaves, or neighborhoods dominated by one ethnic group.
Both tend to have younger residents compared to most other cities around the United States, although LA’s a bit younger. (The median age in New York is about 35.8, while the median age in LA is about 34.6.)
It’s really freaking expensive to live in both cities, although LA is about 8.3% less expensive than New York. But it’s a lot more expensive to buy a home in LA. The median household income in both cities is similar. (LA 61,931, NYC 64,605) The unemployment rates and job growth rates are also comparable.(LA 4.2%, NYC 4.2% ) (LA 1.2% job growth, NYC 2% job growth)
Related to how expensive it is in both places, of course, is how crowded both cities are. While LA is notorious for its bad traffic, by some metrics New York’s traffic is actually worse. Here’s another surprise. If you look at the entire metro areas, LA, the city known for its sprawl that goes on for miles and miles, has a higher population density than New York. But city proper, ain’t nobody as dense as New York City. We’re talking 27,000 per square mile in NYC versus around 8,000 people per square mile in LA. The average commute time for both cities is way higher than the national average.
New Yorkers use more public transportation than LA folks BY FAR. I mean, there’s really no comparison. In LA, people own cars. They drive. In New York, over half of the households don’t own a car. 75% of Manhattan residents don’t.
