Münster cathedral is Freiburg's biggest sight in the city, one of the oldest and most beautiful in all of Europe. The gargoyles are not to be missed; be sure to study every corner of the Münster. Make the effort to climb the stairs to the top of the tower for the fabulous views (Entry €1.50). Every day in the morning until 13:00 Mon-Fri and 13:30 Saturday, there is a market on the square surrounding the church. Visit on Saturday morning, as it then will be the biggest and nicest. Vendors are pleasant and sell local produce and goods. Recommended fare is a Bratwurst mit Brötchen (Bratwurst in a bun) or Currywurst for around €2.20. They're inexpensive, authentic, and make a delicious lunch or snack.

Schwabentor. One of two remaining old city gates.
Martinstor. The other old city gate, which is well known locally for the McDonald's next door which has placed its logo on the gate.

Freiburg Minster is the cathedral of Freiburg im Breisgau, southwest Germany. The last duke of Zähringen had started the building around 1200 in romanesque style. The construction continued in 1230 in Gothic style. The minster was partly built on the foundations of an original church that had been there from the beginning of Freiburg, in 1120.
In the Middle Ages, Freiburg lay in the Diocese of Konstanz. In 1827, Freiburg Minster became the seat of the newly erected Catholic Archdiocese of Freiburg, and thus a cathedral. The Swiss historian Jacob Burckhardt once said that the church's 116-meter tower will forever remain the most beautiful spire on earth. His remark gave rise to the frequently heard misquote of the most beautiful tower in the whole of Christianity.
The tower is nearly square at the base, and at its centre is the dodecagonal star gallery. Above this gallery, the tower is octagonal and tapered, and above this, is the spire. It is the only Gothic church tower in Germany that was completed in the Middle Ages (1330), and miraculously, has lasted until the present, surviving the bombing raids of November 1944, which destroyed all of the houses on the west and north side of the market. The tower was subject to severe vibration at the time, and its survival of these vibrations is attributed to its lead anchors, which connect the sections of the spire. The windows had been taken out of the spire at the time by church staff led by Monsignor Max Fauler, and so these also suffered no damage.
Freiburg Minster was not the seat of a bishop until 1827, long after it was built. The tower has 16 bells, the oldest being the Hosanna bell from 1258, which weighs 3,290 kilograms. This bell can be heard on Thursday evening after the Angelus, on Friday at 11:00 am (a time consequently known as Spätzleglocke), on Saturday evenings, and each year on 27 November in remembrance of the air raid.
There are two important altars inside the cathedral: the high altar of Hans Baldung, and another altar of Hans Holbein the Younger in a side chapel. The nave windows were donated by the guilds, and the symbols of the guilds are featured on them. The deep red color in some of the windows is not the result of a dye, but instead the result of a suspension of solid gold nanoparticles. In 2003, the Lenten cloth was restored and backed with a supporting material. It now weighs over a ton, and so must be carried from the workshop with heavy machinery for its use during Lent.

With a dramatic 116m spire, the Gothic cathedral Freiburg Minster towers over the central square Münsterplatz.
Sitting plump at the foot of the Black Forest’s wooded slopes and vineyards, Freiburg is a sunny, cheerful university town, its medieval Altstadt a storybook tableau of gabled townhouses, cobblestone lanes and cafe-rimmed plazas. Party-loving students spice up the local nightlife. Blessed with 2000 hours of annual sunshine, this is Germany’s warmest city. Indeed, while neighbouring hilltop villages are still shovelling snow, the trees in Freiburg are clouds of white blossom, and locals are already imbibing in canal-side beer gardens. This eco-trailblazer has shrewdly tapped into that natural energy to generate nearly as much solar power as the whole of Britain, making it one of the country’s greenest cities.

Lying in a secluded wine-rich corner of the German state of Baden-Württemberg, Freiburg is a laid-back, beautiful university city. Known throughout Germany for Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg, good weather, and vineyards, Freiburg is considered by Germans to be a desirable place to live.
Due to its secluded location at the border triangle of Germany, France, and Switzerland, and being fairly removed from any other larger German cities, locals will frequently go shopping in France and Switzerland for their respective native products and go to museums and theaters in Basel or Zürich. One can find a strong local patriotism, which shows itself in the anthem of Baden (a former independent state), which can be heard more often than the national anthem.
Although Freiburg itself is not a major tourist destination or a large city, it can serve as a relatively inexpensive base from which to explore much of central Europe. Thanks to its excellent connections via rail and road to the outside world, Freiburg can easily allow to travel to all of Switzerland, Germany, Austria, the Benelux countries, and France with little trouble and at good prices. If you plan on an extended stay or travel to these destinations, it can be a welcoming base to return to after each segment of your journey, with more than enough to entertain you for a few days while you stay in Freiburg.

Old South German organ music on the Praetorius organ of Freiburg University
In 1919 Wilibald Gurlitt (1889-1963) became a lecturer at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau, where he founded the musicology department. He was a promoter of the Orgelbewegung (Organ Reform Movement) which sought to turn away from many of the perceived excesses of Romantic organ building and repertoire, in favor of organs understood to be more similar to those of the Baroque Era in Northern Germany. In 1921, he had the so-called Praetorius organ built by master-organ-builder Oscar Walcker (Ludwigsburg), based on Praetorius' De organographia from 1619. It was destroyed in 1944 in a bombing raid, but a large section of it was rebuilt in 1955, and newly restored in 2001.
This album was recorded on the Praetorius organ in 2006 by Kirsten Galm (né Eberle, *1978), who was the organist of Freiburg's Universitätskirche (University Church) from 2001 to 2012.

Freiburger Münster
Ryeberg Home Movie: Sun-Dappled Woods, Freiburg, Germany
Freiburger Münster, early 13th century gothic monument with the most beautiful spire on earth (so said Swiss historian, Jacob Burckhardt), anchors the fine town of Freiburg Im Breisgau. The forest-covered hillside belongs to the Black Forest; the locals refer to the hill as the Schlossberg — once a fortified castle, now a beer garden — Freiburg is a university town after all.

Saw the statues of OG political philosophers (and personal faves!), Aristotle and Plato at the University of Freiburg in Freiburg im Breisgau, in the state of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. As one of the oldest universities in the Austrian-Habsburg territory, Uni Freiburg has been associated with famous philosophers like Martin Heidegger, Hannah Arendt, Edmund Husserl, and Max Weber.
In this video you're going to see this wonderful little town of Glottertal--also in Baden-Württemberg--where we stayed for a night. Our Airbnb hosts, Martin & Dominika, we're soooooooo accommodating and their place was sooooooooo beautiful that we wanted them to adopt us!!! Their front yard is like, literally, a field and a vineyard, plus the cold weather was perfect!!!! It's also really quiet, plus you'll be surrounded by animals hahahhaha! AAAHHHHHH!!!! Definitely going back to Glottertal in the future to get some R&R--perfect!
We also went biking in the old town of Freiburg (a short train ride from Glottertal), and then took a 15-minute boat ride in Lake Titisee. IN. LAKE. TITISEE. It's a lake in the Black Forest (called the Black Forest because there are so many trees, they looked black) that was formed during the last ice age. You can actually swim in the lake as well if you're adventurous! It's like 600m deep, or whatever. It also freezes during winter, but the snow isn't super thick so they regulated the number of people that can come visit then. I can only imagine how beautiful this freezing lake would be!

GERMANY Freiburg Im Breisgau

Franz Anton Maichelbeck (Reichenau, 6 July 1702 - Freiburg im Breisgau, 14 June 1750)
German composer and keyboardist. In 1721 he was a student of theology at the University of Freiburg, but in 1725 he went to Rome to study sacred music. Two years later he returned to Freiburg, where he became an organist at a local church and in 1730 professor of Italian at the university. He was reputed to have been a learned humanist. His own musical achievement is a three-volume set of keyboard works intended for amateurs titled Die auf dem Clavier lehrende [or spielende] Caecilia, published in the late 1730s. He also composed sacred music in the early Neapolitan style, including several motets.
