UPPER WAIKANI FALLS | Climbing Down | Road to Hana 2019
Driving the Road to Hana, at mile 19 is arguably one of the best stops - Upper Waikani Falls...3 waterfalls in a single location! While most will just take pictures at the road level, those who are more adventurous will take a short hike down to the waterfalls!

5-28-18 Upper Waikani Falls aka 3 Bears on the Road to Hana [4K]
The Road to Hana offers numerous waterfalls such as the case here. This is the 2nd of the waterfalls we visited today. This waterfall is only a 5 minute walk from the bridge. The hardest thing is parking. You will have to park above the bend which is a 10 minute walk..... well worth it.

Driving dangerous back roads in Maui
Driving near the back side of Haleakala, Maui, Hawaii with a Jeep. The one lane dangerous roads require one to focus and have a good vehicle. These roads can be very dangerous especially in bad weather conditions and a poor quality vehicle.

Road to Hana, Maui Hawaii
The Hana Highway is a 64.4-mile-long (103.6 km) stretch of Hawaii Routes 36 and 360 which connects Kahului to the town of Hana in east Maui. To the east of Kalepa Bridge, the highway continues to Kipahulu as Hawaii Route 31 (the Piilani Highway). Although Hana is only about 52 miles (84 km) from Kahului, an uninterrupted car-trip takes about 2.5 hours to drive, since the highway is very winding, narrow, and passes over 59 bridges, of which 46 are only one lane wide. There are approximately 620 curves along Route 360 from just east of Kahului to Hana, almost all of it through lush, tropical rainforest.
The Hana Highway is a popular tourist attraction in Maui. Guidebooks often devote large sections to traveling the highway leading to the eastern side of Maui, documenting the many waterfalls and attractions that can be found along the way. Some of these attractions lie within or through private property and will often have no trespassing signs posted or even signs claiming that the attraction does not exist. All beaches in Hawaii are public. Some guidebooks document the keep out areas and ways past barbed wire fences and locked gates to reach attractions.
Waianapanapa black sand beach, Maui Hawaii
Waiʻanapanapa State Park is a 122-acre (0.49 km2) state park in Hana, on the island of Maui, in Hawaii. It is located at the end of Waiʻanapanapa Road off Hana Highway at mile marker 32, 53 miles (85 km) east of Kahului, Maui. Waiʻanapanapa means “glistening fresh water” in the Hawaiian language, referring to nearby fresh water streams and sparkling pools. The camp offers camping facilities, including a small lawn where campers may pitch a tent, and a public bathroom nearby.
Upper Waikani Falls, Maui Hawaii
Upper Waikani Falls is one of the most popular waterfalls on Maui, located along the Road to Hana (Hana Highway). It is also known as Three Bears Falls because of its three parallel drops with successively lower heights (like papa bear, mama bear and baby bear). However, this only happens when there isn't too much water flowing down the waterfalls. During wet weather, the waterfall becomes one big bear, dropping about 70 feet (21 m).
Waikani Falls is located about 0.3 miles (0.5 km) after mile marker 19 on the Hana Highway. There is a small turnout before the bridge. But since it is a popular waterfall and many tour buses stop here, it can get crowded. There is also a trail that leads down to the base of the waterfall, located at the far side of the bridge.

Visiting Wailua Falls, Waterfall in Hawaii, United States
Wailua Falls is a 173-foot[1] waterfall located near Lihue (Kauai, Hawaii) that feeds into the Wailua River. The waterfall is prominently featured on the opening credits of the television show Fantasy Island.
There are paths to the bottom of the falls, but it can be muddy and slippery. The trail further from the parking lot is less steep than the closer one. In ancient times, Hawaiian men would jump from the top of the falls to prove their manhood. Some people still leap off the top of the falls, though it is dangerous and illegal. The pool is great for swimming, but there are swift currents close to the waterfall. [2] There is another waterfall nearby named 'Opaeka'a Falls. For more info, visit this link:

Secret Maui Waterfall Hike: Hiking 13 Crossings Trail - The Detourist Guide To Travel - Maui | Ep 13
Enjoy our show? Support it for $1 →
On this episode we finally visit some of the world famous Maui waterfalls on the 13 crossings trail (also know as Makamaka'ole Falls). This secret maui waterfall hike goes from lush jungle to secluded swimming holes and ends with some of Maui's best waterfalls! This Maui hike has just about everything you could imagine one of the top Maui hikes to have. Make sure to subscribe to continue following our Maui travel as we spend the next several months experiencing what it’s like to live, work and explore one of the most beautiful places in all of America on our Maui travel vlog.
The Detourist Guide To Travel is a long term travel show created by Alex & Laura, a Pacific Northwest based YouTube travel couple. We’re into experiencing what it’s really like to live, work and enjoy a destination like the locals do, not the people who visit. So, for the past several years we’ve left our home in the Northwest (Tacoma, WA) and lived somewhere new in the world from Vietnam all the way to Spain. What makes us different than the other 100 billion travel vloggers, digital nomads and backpackers on Youtube? We avoid the tourist track. No hostels or resorts. No tour guides or guide books. No souvenirs or travel clothes. We buy vehicles & groceries. We get apartments & jobs. We go slow & take our time, because if a place is worth going, it’s worth staying for a while.

Pua'a Kaa Falls & State Wayside Park
Quick overview of the Pua'a Kaa State Wayside Park, found at mile marker 22 on the Road to Hana. Fun little parking lot full of chickens and cats and then 3 tiers of waterfalls through through the park. Many swim in the pool at the base of the first waterfall. A few picnic tables here and full restroom facility.
Maui part 3: The Road to Hana, first part (includes mile markers)
(Time-stamps and info, below.)
In this part, I chronicle the first part of driving on The Road to Hana via time-lapse, clips, and images. Starting at Ho'okipa Lookout, where Part 2 ended, we head south on 36, which becomes 360, The Road to Hana. As we transitioned from a drier environment to the incredible beauty of a lush jungle, we were forced to slow down, to enjoy the drive. It's well worth the time and effort to venture this route, where one can gorge on Nature and can sample another time that's uniquely preserved, thanks to the terrain.

Tips:
--While it can be done in a day trip, I recommend spending at least one night in Hana. If you do plan on day-tripping it, then start early; I don't recommend the return trip in the dark.
--Secure valuables in your vehicle, keeping them out of view, if you plan to be away from your vehicle for an extended time. It's safe, but there might be a few opportunists, as there are nearly anywhere you go.
--Start with a full tank of gas.
--Check road conditions before you start; mudslides can close the road, if not delay traffic:
--Be prepared for muddy jungle conditions, e.g., sturdy shoes, towels, mosquito repellent; be aware that not all trails to the waterfalls are ideal for everyone. Slippahs/flip-flops should be ok if you only plan to enjoy the drive, opting out of any paths to waterfalls, etc, but it doesn't hurt to have sturdy shoes handy.
--Have cash handy for the little stands and vendors along the road.
--There are a few spots you can purchase water and refreshments but I'd advise to procure some, before hitting the road.
--Please respect the land and people.
--Instead of succumbing to any road rage--fellow rubberneckers, one-lane bridges, slower speed limits, etc--enjoy the pace and the beauty. It's a gem of a route; savor it. Embrace Aloha.
