Central Park in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
LAVA, with partner ASPECT Studio, has won the international competition to design the 16 hectare Central Park in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, with construction due to start in 2020.
The metaphoric ‘railway lines’ remind visitors of the old urban fabric, provide directional paths, maximise the park's existing greenery, increase access to diverse functional areas and articulate zones of activity. They end with a dramatically twisting steel sculpture that further memorialises the transport history.
The walkways delineate a mix of active and passive spaces. Sculpture gardens, outdoor art galleries, water features, music and theatre performance pavilions, a skate park, sport zones, playgrounds, forests, waterfalls, together with commercial aspects, will make it a day and night destination.
Artificial plants will complement the existing landscape. ‘Water purification’ trees collect rainwater to be recycled and used for watering, drinking fountains and fire hydrants. ‘Ventilation trees’ reduce heat and create fresh air. ‘Solar trees’ feature solar panels angled to optimise radiation and store power, and info screens, charging docks, WIFI routers.

HOPE -solo exhibition by Pham Huy Thong at Craig Thomas Gallery, Saigon 2015
Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam – Craig Thomas Gallery is pleased to announce Hope, a solo exhibition of paintings by Vietnam-based artist Pham Huy Thong. The cocktail reception opening of Hope on 11 December will also double as the grand opening of CTG’s second gallery space in Ho Chi Minh City. CTG’s second gallery is located at 165 Calmette Street in the central business district of Saigon.
Pham Huy Thong (b. 1981) is one of Vietnam’s most thoughtful and compelling young visual artists. A talented painter, Thong’s previous collections Dong Bao (2010) and Hands (2012) have demonstrated not only his technical finesse but also his relevance as a commentator on the social and polictical issues effecting Vietnam and the Southeast Asian region.
Thong commenced the Hope series in early 2014 with an aim towards focusing on issues relating to Vietnam’s rural farmers and urban poor. The
artist wishes to highlight how Vietnam’s recent process of urbanization and modernization has created and is exacerbating the gap between rich and poor in the country. Of the Hope series, Thong says:
“I want to portray images of famers in a spiral of economic changes. As in all developing economies, farmers in Vietnam have had to flee their homes and fields to get to the cities where they can find jobs and more secure incomes. As a result, village culture and family clan ties thousands of years in the making have been loosened. In my most recent paintings, I want to look more deeply but also more generally at the issues surrounding the process of a farmer leaving his ancestral village. The development of any big city actually involves the amalgamation and absorption of the diverse influences of its neighboring regions and can sometimes be understood in a way that is quite “mechanical.” Viewed through a cultural lens, the exchanges during migration involve accretions. Each person that leaves their village will bring to their new destination some of their homeland’s own distinctiveness or “local flavor.” In economic terms,
however, there is more of an exchange between rural people and their destination cities. These people go to the cities to find work and do not return until harvest time or when asked to return home to perform an important familial duty that cannot be refused. Bringing energy, time and even happiness to the city to sell, farmers purchase the chance of survival for their families. The exchange here can sometimes be conceived of as a form of “bet” when viewed from a psychological and religious perspective. By analyzing the observable factors, I want to touch on the string of connections between country people and the homelands lying behind them. With the three paintings Land for Sale, Hometown Along, and Homeland Burden, I have not incorporated the destination that these country people are heading towards as I did not want to make a choice between the image of an actual city or some happy abstract shore. Instead, I painted them in orientations of movement while still carrying pieces of their home villages with them. Home is the departure point but it is also something which is burdening them throughout their journeys. They go with the hopes of being able to send money back to their families, but in the process they also lose something of themselves and their roots in the effort to make their bread and butter.”
Pham Huy Thong graduated from the Hanoi Industrial Fine Arts University in 2004. Thong’s Hope collection will be displayed at CTG’s new Calmette space from 11-15 December, and then will be moved and displayed at CTG’s original space (27i Tran Nhat Duat Street, District 1) from 16 December through 8 January 2016.

23 Things To Do In Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) Vietnam

►FREE eBook:
When I was in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), along with eating as much Vietnamese food as I could, one of my goals was to film a travel video about some of the best things to do in Saigon. After putting together a complete list, it turned out to be 23, and I hope this list of attractions will help and inspire you to visit Vietnam’s largest and most exciting city.
1. Binh Tay Market - Binh Tay Market is one of the largest wholesale distribution markets, and a perfect place to go if you’re looking to go shopping in Ho Chi Minh City.
2. Thien Hau Temple (Pagoda) - Located in Chinatown, in District 5, the temple is dedicated to Thien Hau and I really loved the sculptures and the elaborate design of the temple.
3. Museum of Ho Chi Minh City - This museum offers a glimpse into the history and development of the city and Vietnam.
4. Bitexco Financial Tower - This is the tallest building in Saigon, and you can either go to the Skydeck or a cafe at the top for a view of the city.
5. Independence Palace (Reunification Palace) - Probably one of the most well known tourism things to do in Saigon is to visit the Independence Palace, the the former home of the president of South Vietnam during the Vietnam War.
6. Saigon Cathedral of Notre Dame - With the French influence in Vietnam, the Notre Dame cathedral is a beautiful Catholic church. Attend a service or just visit.
7. Central Post Office - Designed by Gustave Eiffel, the Central Post Office in Ho Chi Minh City is an attraction mainly for its design and architecture. It’s a beautiful building.
8. War Remnants Museum - Although this is not one of the happiest attractions in Saigon, it’s a place to remember and honor the horrible events that are a result of a war.
9. Opera House - Right in Dong Khoi area, and there are still opera shows available.
10. Dong Khoi Street - This is the height of high end shopping in Saigon.
11. Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens - The zoo itself is not too great, but the beauty of the Saigon zoo is the botanical gardens, and the lush gardens, and taking a break from the city.
12. FITO Museum (Museum of Traditional Vietnamese Medicine) - I was quite impressed by the Vietnamese medicine private museum - very interactive and educational.
13. San Art Laboratory – If you love modern art, the San Art Laboratory is a great place to see and visit in Saigon.
14. Turtle Lake at Night - If you’re looking for some things to do at night in Saigon, head to Turtle Lake to chill out, relax, hang out with friends, and eat snacks.
15. Ben Thanh Market - One of the most famous things to do in Saigon District 1 is visit the Ben Thanh Market, one of the major central landmarks of the city.
16. Phu My Hung and Starlight Bridge - Located outside of central Ho Chi Minh City, Phu My Hung is a modern development, and a great place to walk around.
17. Water Puppet Show - Though originally from the north of Vietnam, water puppet shows are popular also in Saigon. I went to the Golden Dragon Water Puppet theater.
18. Museum of Vietnamese History - Probably one of the most extensive and important museum showing the history of Vietnam and Ho Chi Minh City.
19. Rooftop Bar - Seeing Saigon from above offers a great perspective.
20. Fine Arts Museum - This was my favorite of all the museums in Saigon. The museum is housed in a well preserved building, and the art is amazing - located right in District 1 across the roundabout from Ben Thanh Market.
21. Jade Emperor Pagoda - Dedicated to the Jade Emperor, the pagoda has a real ancient feel to it, and it’s worth seeing when you visit.
22. Local Wet Market - One of my favorite things to do is visit a local fresh wet market, which you’ll find all over the city. The ingredients, food, and culture, all stand out at fresh markets.
23. Vietnamese Street Food - By my ultimate favorite activity in Saigon is eating street food, and there are an abundance of delicious Vietnamese street foods to sample.
Thank you for watching this video about the top 23 things to do in Saigon, Vietnam. I hope it has given you some great ideas to help you plan your visit.

Spraycation in Saigon 2018
In Jan of 2018 I went on a trip to Saigon, Vietnam to better understand their culture and improve my travel photography skills by taking pics of graffiti for Juxtapoz Magazine. But I ended up running around town with graffiti writers from all over the world! With some being from Los Angeles, Oakland, New York City, and others coming from other areas around the world like London and South Africa and Australia it was interesting how fast we all became friends. In no particular order: Lady Aiko, Mine, Mein, Dan, Abys, Glam, Sixte, Scab, Opt1, ZNC, Rice, Answer, Rots, Kong. This is one week of fun in a nation where graffiti isn't illegal as no one knows what exactly it is. You can see some don't like it and others just like to watch but for the most part every area they painted was a construction zone that they knew no one would really care about. After filling up on pho we would ride around on our mopeds from spot to spot every night. It was an exhilarating feeling like we owned the night as during the day the streets were packed with people and other mopeds to the point where it felt a bit overwhelming. The food was amazing, the people were so nice and I barely spent any money. Couldn't have asked for a better trip. Highly recommend making the trek there at some point in your life.

Phu My Hung City Center before and after 25 years of development
PHU MY HUNG: THE PARALLEL OF “HEART” AND “POTENTIAL”
Phu My Hung City Centre was risen incredibly from a forgotten and wild marshland in Saigon South based on the envisioned development of HCM City toward the East Sea. Over 1/4 of the century, which factors have helped Phu My Hung succeed in building an international standard and the best urban area in Vietnam?
STRATEGIC & SYNCHRONOUS MASTER PLAN: 25 years ago, when the urban concept was still perceived limitedly in Vietnam, Phu My Hung spent over $2 million USD for the Saigon South masterplan designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (USA). At that moment, the quality of masterplan received high praise from international professionals with many prestigious awards. However, turning the ideas on paper into 484ha urban area with 8 well-established districts is such a journey reflecting dreams, patience and capacity of Phu My Hung.
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: In spite of many fluctuations of real estate market, Phu My Hung has still followed the sustainable development strategy. When real estate market is “quite” in the period of 2008 – 2011, Phu My Hung was still trying to complete The Crescent project as planned. Phu My Hung highlights the prestige of company by ensuring the project progress and handing over 100 projects which are high-quality and even offer more values than what have been marketed. Phu My Hung puts all “heart and soul” in creating “green” spaces and multicultural community for more than 30,000 residents.
The modern Phu My Hung City Centre nowadays is not only the result, the achievement but also the affirmation of the “heart” and “potential” of Phu My Hung. Let’s take a look at development journey of Phu My Hung over the last 25 years!

Vietnam Boutique Hotel Hanoi ????????
■ HANOI, VIETNAM: Vietnam's capital is fast catching up to the other mega cities of South-East Asia like Bangkok, Manilla and Saigon in when it comes to economic growth. Case in point, the city's skyline is now littered with flashy new hotels sporting roof top terraces giving international tourists a taste of the high-life few of them could afford back home. (Myself included!)
Only having been modestly satisfied with the hotel I stayed in the last time I was in Hanoi, I decided to pay a little extra to see what you'd get in the 4 star hotel range.
Did O'Gallery Classy hotel & Spa downtown Hanoi live up to her promise? And how well do the locals speak English in Hanoi these days? That and more in this first video from Vietnam.

Củ Chi Tunnels Complex (Vietnam War) - ???????? Vietnam - 4K Virtual Tour
Full coverage of the Cu Chi Tunnels Complex, 40 miles from Ho-Chi-Minh City (previously Saigon) in Vietnam. Click here ▶ to see highlights and guide.
(From Wiki):
The tunnels of Củ Chi are an immense network of connecting tunnels located in the Củ Chi District of Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam, and are part of a much larger network of tunnels that underlie much of the country. The Củ Chi tunnels were the location of several military campaigns during the Vietnam War, and were the Viet Cong's base of operations for the Tết Offensive in 1968.
The tunnels were used by Viet Cong soldiers as hiding spots during combat, as well as serving as communication and supply routes, hospitals, food and weapon caches and living quarters for numerous North Vietnamese fighters. The tunnel systems were of great importance to the Viet Cong in their resistance to American forces, and helped to counter the growing American military effort.

Saigon Artbook Crowdfunding 2016
Saigon Artbook (SGAB) is an independent publisher of contemporary artbooks supporting and showcasing emerging local artists in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam since 2013.
We are a non-profit organisation created in support of emerging artists and with a mission to engage young people with local art. There are few opportunities for arts funding in Vietnam, and little value placed on contemporary art. Artists often struggle to find art spaces and galleries where they are able to exhibit. Through our publication and community events, we hope to initiate change and give the exciting artists we work with the recognition and help they deserve.

Intro to Ho Chi Minh City
Hop on the back of our motorbike and let one of our English speaking guide navigate you through the busy streets of Saigon! We will take you to through hidden passages to discover some of the hidden gems located outside of the touristy districts and experience some of the best tasting street foods Vietnam has to offer!
Reunification Palace. This landmark dates back to 1868 that was originally built by the French, which marked the newly established colony of Indochina. It was not until 1962 when two Vietnamese rebel pilots bombed the building that the president had ordered a new construction - named the Independence Palace. However, in 1975 the Viet Cong rampaged down its iron gates that Vietnam has been “reunified.” Since then, the building is known as the Reunification Palace. Today, this place has become of political and cultural significance.
Notre Dame Cathedral. French colonists constructed this cathedral between 1863 and 1880. The materials used, including the bricks and stained glass windows, were all imported from France and tourists can still view most of its originality.
Central Post Office. French architect Gustave Eiffel created this magnificent building that resembles a traditional European railway station in the late 1880s. The post office is one of the busiest and working governmental structures in the country.
Temples and Pagodas. These unique architectural buildings - some at least 300 years old! - reflect the innumerous diverse religions in Vietnam. Often, the best way to avoid the urban’s hectic noise is to visit one of these places to restore and regain the balance in our lives.
War Remnant Museum. History is written by the victors. Learn more about the Vietnam War from the Vietnamese's side of the story by visiting one of the most popular exhibits in Vietnam.
Soups and Noodles. A very popular type of dish is pho, which consists of rice noodles, complemented with either beef or pork, fresh green scallions, and a light beef broth drizzled with squeezed lime for a sour and tangy taste.
Fish and Meats. One of the highlights of the Vietnamese menu is its delicious assortment of fish, whether it is freshwater or saltwater. The more famous dish is cha ca, which is white fish sautéed in butter served with rice noodles and sprinkled crushed peanuts for the finishing touch. Meats in Vietnam are either be served alongside main dishes or presented as an entrée itself. Many of the meat are simply beef, chicken or pork.
Vegetarian. For those wanting to skip the meat diet, vegetarian cuisine is also very trendy amongst Vietnamese. Buddhist monks, who were very conscience of eating healthier, first introduced the diet. Some appetizing dishes include a mix of onions, tomatoes, bean sprouts, various mushrooms, peppers, and tofu.
Fruits. Because of Vietnam’s tropical climate, there is a plethora of fruits. Some of the most sought-out ones are durians, bananas, passion fruits, lychees, longans, and mangos. Many times these fruits can be complimented on desserts, such as shaved ice, or simply be eaten as a delectable snack.
Beverages. Quench your thirst with freshly squeezed sugar cane juice for your sweet cravings, fresh coconuts from the Mekong Delta, or wind down with a cup of coffee with some friends. Vietnamese coffee is usually made in an aluminum filter cup that slowly drips finely, grinded coffee beans poured over hot water with a dollop of condense milk. Better yet, if you want to immerse yourself with a larger crowd, try some of Vietnam’s popular alcoholic drinks including bottled beers like Saigon and 333.
As the saying goes: Work hard, but play harder. Unwind yourself from the hustling day. However, if you think you have seen enough of Ho Chi Minh City, wait until evening hours. Activities really begin to animate during these late hours. The night tour is ideal for those who seeks gratifying entertainment in Vietnam’s nightlife. Not only will you be able to go shopping, visit historical landmarks in the evening and enjoy an authentic local dinner, you will also be able to attend the local club and/or bar savoring an alcoholic drink and be entertained by a local live music band.
