Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, Oct 2015 | Twobirdsbreakingfree
A journey through Ho Chi Minh city in southern Vietnam. Also known as Saigon, this city is a massive sprawling giant that spreads out in all directions and is subdivided into 16 districts. We help you to make some sense of this frenzied city and show you the highlights that should be included on any visit.
Explore the Dong Khoi area, where you’ll find the more glamorous hotels, boutique & souvenir shops and the tallest building in the city: the Bitexco financial tower. Bargain hard for souvenirs and other goods and at the hectic Ben Thanh market, explore cholon (chinatown) and it’s tranquil pagodas, scented with burning incense sticks, stroll through the city parks and watch the locals play the national sport: da cau where they keep a weighted shuttlecock airborne without using the hands, enjoy a bird’s eye view of the city while having a drink at any of the rooftop bars, witness the french architecture everywhere, from the post office to notre dame cathedral, take a few hours to wander through the fine arts museum, gain an insight into the American war in Vietnam in the very popular War Remnants museum, watch a water-puppet show, discover a little about the country’s rich wildlife at Ho Chi Minh zoo, have a fun-filled day at the fairy-tale like Suoi Tien theme park or at one of Saigon’s water parks. Sample the very best of Vietnamese cuisine in the high-end restaurants or eat just like the locals from street stalls.
Whether its food, history, culture, religion, architecture, theme parks, zoos, the frenzied pace of life or a combination of all of these things that attract you to cities, Ho Chi Minh city has you covered. If you’re in southern Vietnam, it’s best to begin your trip here, in the very heart of the south.

Ghost Festival Day-Praying For The Hungry Ghosts-Saigon Vietnam
Throughout East Asia and Southeast Asia during the 7th month of the Lunar Calendar it's believed that the gates of hell are opened so as to allow ghosts to wander the earth for the month. These ghosts are said to have experienced a particularly bad death, or do not have anyone praying for them in the after life. Followers of Buddhism and Taoism as well as others who believe in the presence of these ghosts will put out offerings of food and drink, as well as money. Prayers are also offered so the ghosts will not create mischief or havoc during the month. There are many superstitions that surround the ghost month including not getting married, starting a business or going on vacation. The most important day is the full moon day which is considered Ghost Festival Day falling on the 15 day of the 7th month of the Lunar Calendar. In Vietnam this also coincides with Vu Lan which is like a Mother's Day. People also go to the temple to prayer for the mothers but usually prayer for fathers as well as the rest of the family. If you spot someone wearing a red rose it means their mother or parents are still alive. If you see them wearing a white rose it means the mother or father is deceased. If you want to see any of these rituals when visiting Saigon the Ba Thien Hau Pagoda in District 5 is a good place to visit as well as other temples in this district. Hoi An, Hue, and Hanoi would also be great places to see the rituals surrounding this month or day when visiting Vietnam.

The Việt Cộng was the name given by Western sources to the National Liberation Front amid the Vietnam War (1955–1975). The National Liberation Front was a political association with its own particular armed force – People's Liberation Armed Forces of South Vietnam (PLAF) – in South Vietnam and Cambodia, that battled the United States and South Vietnamese governments, inevitably rising on the triumphant side. It had both guerrilla and general armed force units, and also a system of frameworks who composed laborers in the region it controlled. Numerous fighters were selected in South Vietnam, yet others were joined to the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN), the standard North Vietnamese armed force. Amid the war, communists and against war representatives demanded the Việt Cộng was a rebellion indigenous toward the South, while the U.S. what's more, South Vietnamese governments depicted the gathering as a device of Hanoi. In spite of the fact that the wording recognizes northerners from the southerners, comrade powers were under a solitary order structure set up in 1958.
North Vietnam built up the National Liberation Front on December 20, 1960 to incite revolt in the South. Huge numbers of the Việt Cộng's center individuals were volunteer regroupees, southern Viet Minh who had resettled in the North after the Geneva Accord (1954). Hanoi gave the regroupees military preparing and sent them back toward the South along the Ho Chi Minh trail in the mid 1960s. The NLF called for southern Vietnamese to oust the disguised frontier administration of the American colonialists and to make endeavors toward the serene unification. The People's Liberation Armed Forces of South Vietnam (PLAF's) best-known activity was the Tet Offensive, a huge strike on more than 100 South Vietnamese urban focuses in 1968, including an assault on the U.S. government office in Saigon. The hostile bolted the consideration of the world's media for quite a long time, additionally overextended the Việt Cộng. Later comrade offensives were led dominatingly by the North Vietnamese. The association was broken up in 1976 when North and South Vietnam were formally brought together under a socialist government.

Viet Cong
The Việt Cộng (( listen)) was a political organization and army in South Vietnam and Cambodia that fought the United States and South Vietnamese governments during the Vietnam War (1959–1975), and emerged on the winning side. It had both guerrilla and regular army units, as well as a network of cadres who organized peasants in the territory it controlled. Many soldiers were recruited in South Vietnam, but others were attached to the People’s Army of Vietnam (PAVN), the regular North Vietnamese army. During the war, communists and anti-war spokesmen insisted the Việt Cộng was an insurgency indigenous to the South, while the U.S. and South Vietnamese governments portrayed the group as a tool of Hanoi. Although the terminology distinguishes northerners from the southerners, communist forces were under a single command structure set up in 1958.
North Vietnam established the National Liberation Front in 1960 to foment insurgency in the South. Many of the Việt Cộng’s core members were “regroupees”, southern Viet Minh who had resettled in the North after the Geneva Accord (1954). Hanoi gave the regroupees military training and sent them back to the South along the Ho Chi Minh Trail in the early 1960s. The NLF called for southern Vietnamese to “overthrow the camouflaged colonial regime of the American imperialists” and to make “efforts toward the peaceful unification”. The Việt Cộng’s best-known action was the Tet Offensive, a massive assault on more than 100 South Vietnamese urban centers in 1968, including an attack on the US embassy in Saigon. The offensive riveted the attention of the world’s media for weeks, but also overextended the Việt Cộng. Later communist offensives were conducted predominately by the North Vietnamese. The organisation was dissolved in 1976 when North and South Vietnam were officially unified under a communist government.

SUMMARY
=======
The Vietnam War (Vietnamese: Chiến tranh Việt Nam), also known as the Second Indochina War, and in Vietnam as the Resistance War Against America (Vietnamese: Kháng chiến chống Mỹ) or simply the American War, was a conflict that occurred in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia from 1 November 1955 to the fall of Saigon on 30 April 1975. It was the second of the Indochina Wars and was officially fought between North Vietnam and the government of South Vietnam. The North Vietnamese army was supported by the Soviet Union, China, and other communist allies; the South Vietnamese army was supported by the United States, South Korea, the Philippines, Australia, Thailand and other anti-communist allies. The war is considered a Cold War-era proxy war by some US perspectives. The war would last approximately 19 years and would also form the Laotian Civil War as well as the Cambodian Civil War, which resulted in all 3 countries becoming communist states in 1975.
There are several competing views on the conflict. Some on the North Vietnamese and National Liberation Front side view the struggle against U.S. forces as a colonial war and a continuation of the First Indochina War against forces from France and later on the United States, especially in light of the failed 1954 Geneva Conference calls for elections. Other interpretations of the North Vietnamese side include viewing it as a civil war, especially in the early and later phases following the U.S. interlude between 1965 and 1970, as well as a war of liberation. In the perspective of some, the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam, the successor to the Việt Cộng, was motivated in part by significant social changes in the post-World War II Vietnam, and had initially seen it as a revolutionary war supported by Hanoi. The pro-government side in South Vietnam viewed it as a civil war, a defensive war against communism, or were motivated to fight to defend their homes and families. The U.S. government viewed its involvement in the war as a way to prevent a communist takeover of South Vietnam. This was part of the domino theory of a wider containment policy, with the stated aim of stopping the spread of communism.Beginning in 1950, American military advisors arrived in what was then French Indochina. Most of the funding for the French war effort was provided by the U.S. The Việt Cộng, also known as Front national de libération du Sud-Viêt Nam or FNL (the National Liberation Front), a South Vietnamese communist common front aided by the North, fought a guerrilla war against anti-communist forces in the region, while the People's Army of Vietnam, also known as the North Vietnamese Army (NVA), engaged in more conventional warfare, and had launched armed struggles from 1959 onward. U.S. involvement escalated in 1960 under President John F. Kennedy, with troop levels gradually surging under the MAAG program from just under a thousand in 1959 to 16,000 in 1963.By 1964 there were 23,000 U.S. troops in Vietnam, but this escalated further following the 1964 Gulf of Tonkin incident, in which a U.S. destroyer was alleged to have clashed with North Vietnamese fast attack craft. In response the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution gave Lyndon B. Johnson authorization to increase U.S. military presence, deploying ground combat units for the first time and increasing troop levels to 184,000. Every year onward there was significant build-up despite little progress, with Robert McNamara, one of the principal architects of the war, beginning to express doubts of victory by the end of 1966. U.S. and South Vietnamese forces relied on air superiority and overwhelming firepower to conduct search and destroy operations, involving ground forces, artillery, and airstrikes. The U.S. conducted a large-scale strategic bombing campaign against North Vietnam. Following the Tết Offensive, U.S. forces began withdrawal under the V ...
