Located on the southern side of Pinski Rat Mountain, Vela Spila is one of the most important prehistoric archaeological localities in Europe. The archaeological finds from this site prove that several prehistoric communities have been living here and using the cave in their everyday life and for burying of their dead. These extremely significant finds include thousands of pieces of ceramics, whole vessels and other objects made of earthenware. They serve as the proof of the long history of cultural, social, spiritual and economic relations between the inhabitants of Vela Spila and other parts of the Adriatic and the Mediterranean.

Vela Luka is a small town in southern Dalmatia, on the western side of the island of Korčula. Vela Luka developed as a sheltered bay and harbour for ships and today it has several hotels and a medical centre Kalos, visited by people suffering from rheumatism.

Vela spila
Many thousands of years ago, at a time before the great flood, when our world was still young and shackled by snow and ice, there was a group of huntsmen who lived in a cave on a hillside called Pinski rat. They survived by hunting animals. That year, hunting luck was not on their side; it had been weeks since their last prey, children were starving and the elderly were losing strength. The group was threatened by death and extinction. There was no place to run; great frozen mountains were waiting on the north, a dry waterless valley lurked on the south, and somewhere in the distance was a large salt lake which the elderly called the sea. Their leader was a young handsome huntsman whose name vanished in the fickle layers of time; he had the biggest responsibility – to find solution and procure food.
In a grove at the bottom of the valley there lived a longhaired nymph; the protector of animals, nature and harmony. A fair-coloured roe with tender round eyes was particularly attached to her. Some said that the roe was the nymph herself who could change her form if she wished. Her father was the very Creator, the one who breathes life into all living beings, the one who looks after all beings being born again in an unbroken circle of life.
The huntsman, although skilled and daring, was ill-tempered, with no humbleness, modesty or respect. One cold and windy day (at that time, almost all days were cold and windy), he was chasing after the swift roe. Although it seemed as if he would catch her, all of a sudden, out of nowhere, a beautiful girl appeared in front of him. The bewildered huntsman stopped, wandering if this was reality or magic. “Please do not hunt the roe, she is mine, she asked me to protect her, to save her life”, the girl told him. The huntsman, thinking of his hungry parents, friends, children…ignored her plea and continued his chase. He reached and pierced the roe with his spear. Just as the roe was falling down, she turned into a girl – the blond nymph, protector of animals.
Her father, desperate and sad, restored the image of the roe to the girl and placed her among the stars in the sky. He did the same to the huntsman who has been hunting his nymph in the welkin ever since. Angry and sad, the Creator decided to punish all men, to elevate the sea level and flood the entire valley where his beloved daughter detached from life, erasing hence the place of sadness. The sea entered deep into the bay and formed what is today known as Vela Luka. The stars in the sky are the only reminder of the times when the bay was a peaceful valley.
This is the story I heard from my grandfather and he heard it from his; now I have told it to you so that you can tell it to your children.

In this part of our sailing trip, We moored the boat in Korčula dock marina, went to Vela Luka and visited some wineries including bire winery in Lombarda, some wine tasting and bottle sipping with snacks, top of the mountains ride and back to the Korčula marina which its visit will be published next.
-Vela Luka is a small town and a municipality in Dubrovnik-Neretva County in southern Dalmatia, Croatia. The town is located on the western side of the island of Korčula at the bottom of a wide bay which has many indented coves. Vela Luka developed at the beginning of the 19th century in a deep sheltered bay. Its name means big harbour in Croatian chakavian. Inhabitants of the Island of Korčula and Pelješac often refer to it simply as Luka (the port/harbour). It has several hotels and a medical centre called Kalos (for rheumatic disorders and rehabilitation). The inhabitants are farmers, fishermen and workers in tourism. Also the town has other smaller industrial plants.
It has an average of over 2500 hours of sunny weather annually, and is the second largest place, in size, on the Adriatic islands. The diversity and richness of the cultural inheritance of Vela Luka can be seen in the exceptional museums and galleries that are located in the Center for Culture in the town center. The Center for Culture is located in the building that was constructed for school needs in the second half of the 19th century, so the building itself has historical significance. It is located near the Parish Church of St. Joseph. Together they create a magnificent urban structure in the typical Mediterranean spirit.
The museum/gallery is decorated with mosaics made in 1968 when the International Artist's Meeting of Painters was held in Vela Luka.
Vela Luka has many archaeological and architectural points of interest. On the south slope of the hill, Pinski Rat, there is an extraordinary archaeological site. It is called Vela Spila (Big Cave) and it is one of the most important prehistoric cave dwellings in Europe. Vela Spila provides a picture of life on the Mediterranean of Mesolithic and Neolithic people living in that region. Carbon dating has shown that there was human activity going back 20 000 years. The finds are on display at the Center for Culture in Vela Luka. The cave's interior measures approximately 1500 sq. meters and it is located several hundred meters above the beautiful Vela Luka Bay. Another panoramic view of the area can be seen from Hum Hill and the Forteca, an Austro-Hungarian fortress built in the 19th century. Vela Luka has a rich history of Klapa singing (an a cappella style). One of the best known is the Klapa Ošjak.

The final 5th stage is a part of Vela Luka Outdoors festival. For the last few years it is place where mostly trail runners and MTB riders look for fun on trails, followed by more fun after the races – the evening party and day after on Island Proizd.
One of the highlights of Dalmatia Stage Run is the start of this stage – situated in a geological phenomenon and one of the most important archaeological sites on Mediterranean, Vela Spila. It is a cave where people lived 25 000 years ago! There you will have an opportunity to meet and take a photo with cave men – the locals have put on stage life in the cave.
There is also a possibility of taking shorter (10km) route on this stage. In that case, the time would be multiplied by 3 (the longer route is 22 km long). The course is very diverse and fun. It leads through olive groves, vineyards, by the sea, through abandoned old village of Dub and over beautiful viewpoint on summit of hill Hum.
The award ceremony will be held after the race, followed by the legendary party of this outdoor festival.
The day after we will go on a boat trip to Island Proizd. For few years in a row, the beaches of the island were counted among top 5 most beautiful beaches on the whole Mediterranean. Its clean, transparent and turquoise coloured sea is perfect for relaxing and recovering from the strains of past few days. A perfect place to conclude these beautiful memories in every runner`s mind.
