Vetal Tekdi (ARAI Hill) Pune Vlog || I Climb Up a Tree?
I hiked up the beautiful Vetal Tekdi aka ARAI Hill off Paud Road in Pune. My cousin accompanied me. We started the trail at around 5:40 pm and descended by 6:50 pm.

****************************************************************Vetal Hill is a prominent hill in the city limits of Pune, India.
The hill is the highest point within the city limits, with an elevation of 2600 ft.
There is a temple of Vetala located on the top of the hill from which the hill derives its name.
The hill is also known by its Marathi name, Vetal Tekdi.
Vetal Hill in Pune is not just the highest point in the city,
but also qualifies to be called the lungs of Pune (akin to the famous Central Park in New York).
Most months of the year (November to June beginning) the Vetal Hill is rather dry,
though it still attracts its fair share of daily walkers and bird watchers.
Vetal Hill is also rather large, with Pashan Road on one side and S B Road on the other,
with the entire Kothrud on the way.
On a clear day, especially morning, you can see almost the entire Pune from top.
Things to do at Vetal Hill:
Most people who come here in the morning come for a walk or a jog.
Many also come up here to walk their dogs - I have never seen any dogs misbehaving,
and they are generally calm and friendly.
Cycling is also getting popular here, so you can try that as well.
Its an awesome hang-out place where friends can simply sit with their legs dangling into the quarry and catch-up.
There are many couples also who come up here, but you will not find anyone doing anything inappropriate.
Its also a nice place to do some photography, especially if the weather is good and especially in the morning.
Birding at Vetal tekdi:
Birding is extremely popular on Vetal Tekdi and on weekends it's common to find young
photography enthusiast looking for different birds.
The tekdi has the most diverse bird population in the city and you can see bulbul,
bee-eaters, pea fowls, sunbirds, Indian Robin, White breasted Kingfisher, Small Minivet,and more.
How to reach Vetal tekdi?
Vetal TEKDI is accessible from multiple points if you intend to climb, based on where you start from.
You can climb up from Chhaturshringi, Kothrud (Paud Road) and also from the Pashan side.
These climbs are no really marked and you will have to ask around to find the right path if you intend to come up here.
If you want to come up on your car, there is only one road which starts from the Paud Road.
If you coming from Deccan side, take the first right turn after the flyover on the Paud Road.
Vetal Hill timings
There is no specific timings, though going up later in the night is not recommended.
You can find walkers up on the hill as early as 5 am and generally a few as late as 9 pm.
But there are no lights up there and so walking becomes difficult in darkness.

The geographical area is 180 30’ to 180 32’ N and 730 49’ to 730 52’ E covering an area of 10.5 square kilometres (4.1 sq mi).
It runs North-South with some spurs running perpendicular to this hill. Vetal hill runs across areas like MIT College, SNDT Women's University, ILS Law College, Gokhale Nagar, Symbiosis Society and Chatturshrungi.
There is one access road leading up the hill from the south. This can be used to access the Automotive Research Association of India campus located on the hill. There is a public parking lot also located along this road, however access is restricted to this between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm.

I am starting a new web travel series - Pune Travel Journal and the first episode is Vetal Tekdi! ( A hill is called a Tekdi in Marathi)
I am super excited to start this new idea that I had in my mind for quite a while now. I always wanted to know more and explore more about Pune and the surrounding area.
I personally feel that the I.T. culture is taking over the traditional and rich historical culture of Pune, which I don't like. So, when I won't be trekking I will definitely be exploring Places in and around Pune. The first episode is about Vetal Tekdi or ARAI Tekdi or just Tekdi because this is the first place I liked the most when I came to Pune, It was Love at first sight!
Most of the tekdi is privately owned and maybe that's the reason it has still survived. The people who regularly hike here love the tekdi and care for it a lot. Once in a while, I do see idiots here but that's something I cannot control.
It was an old stone quarry which was later shut down and as time passed this place has turned itself into a little sanctuary for birds and animals. There is a huge risk of encroachment and I believe each day the area of the tekdi is shrinking. It's hard to maintain such a vast green space but I am sure the people of Pune will do there best.
This is just the beginning of the series and I am very excited to see how it pans out, be sure to check out Episode 2. Comment below, the place should I explore next.

During the last few years the area has been subjected to various stresses of anthropogenic activities. Plantation of exotic species by forest department, urban development, tree cutting are few of them. Many afforestation programs have been undertaken either by Pune Municipal Corporation or by state forest Department have resulted in growth of many ornamental and exotic species. The Forest Department has also build proper fences to safeguard animals and birds especially peacocks also providing them with appropriate water supply. This has affected in some or other way on the natural vegetation of the hill. A new road connecting Balbharati and Paud Phata is proposed so as to decrease traffic pressure in Nal Stop Chowk. The road will cut across a nearly two kilometre patch of forest on vetal hill, cutting close to ten thousand fully matured and grown trees. The proposed bypass will bring automobile pollution, noise and congestion into the heart of a green area at the foot and lower ridge of the Vetal hill. This is a catastrophic proposal and will destroy one of the last virgin green areas left in Pune.
Several citizen groups and activists have opposed the proposal. Twelve NGOs recently wrote a letter to the PMC opposing the road. A blog and an online petition was promoted to stop the construction of the road. Nagrik Chetana Manch has gone to the Mumbai high Court in a PIL and the HC has stayed the construction of the road. Due to increased urbanization and increased population the biotic pressure in the form of cutting of trees has increased on forest of Vetal Hill.

Pashan lake is a man-made lake, built to accommodate the water requirements of the Pashan and Sutarwadi suburbs. The lake was once a source of drinking water, but the recent boom in urbanisation and silting of the lake has degraded the water and made it unfit for drinking. The lake served as a source of water to old Pashan village, for growing crops and to the nearby Governor's house.[2] The lake and its surrounding area attracts migratory birds and so is popular spot for bird watchers. Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has constructed a 300-metre footpath called the Nature Trail alongside the lake. It is constructed along the western shore of Pashan lake. Also, PMC has built a bamboo plantation and a wall alongside the lake to protect it and attract birds.

Vetal Tekdi (ARAI HILLS) Exploration - Pune | Part 1
Vetal Hill is the highest hill in Pune district with an altitude of 2600 feet. The temple located on the top of the hill is of Goddess Vetala after which the mountain was named. However, during monsoon the terrain is slippery and well fogged making trekking difficult. Vetal hill is protected by the India Forestry Department. Many species of flora and fauna is found which makes the mini trek intresting. The view at the top of the hill gives us a beautiful panorama of Pune city. The early morning trek serves a great motivation as many people come for exercise and meditation. You will mostly find mountain bikers, passionate photographers hunting for great pictures of peacocks and rabbits.

This was a birthday special vlog. We went to Vetal Tekdi or ARAI Hills for a morning walk. I loved this place. It'll be a heaven in the monsoon. There was not much greenery this time but I still would recommend this place to everyone. Just make sure that you reach there by 6 to 6:30 ish because the public doesn't have access to it after ( in the morning. Do carry earphones or headphones with you for maximum results. I mean it. After we were done walking on Vetal Tekdi, we set out for a great breakfast. We had breakfast at Sambaar Pure Veg Restaurant near swargate. It was their Swamy Thali for breakfast that won our hearts. Try it out, it's great!
